The Fat Lady is on the way to the airport to sing at Magny Cours

Magny Cour's combination of technical sections with high speed is yielding a hard fought qualifying session. Biaggi may be in position to take the Riders Championship but the Ducati force are not going to make it easy for him. Sykes will qualify in the top but I don't think the French track is going to be friendly to him or his Kawasaki over the length of the race. BMW riders are in decent position in qualifying and should do very well on race day...IF...they can keep the black side down. Haslam has already gone down once.

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport had a strong but difficult start to the final round of the 2012 FIM Superbike World Championship. Factory rider Marco Melandri (ITA) finished todayÔÇÖs first qualifying practice at Magny-Cours (FRA) third on the provisional first row. His injury, two broken ribs from his crash two weeks ago at Portim?úo (POR), still cause a lot of pain. His team-mate Leon Haslam (GBR) qualified eighth on the provisional second row onboard his BMW S 1000 RR. Leon hurt his right hand when he crashed at the beginning of todayÔÇÖs first free practice on a still-damp part of the track. Sykes takes another Superpole.

Qualifying is over for the final WSBK round. On combined times Melandri lead the first two qualifying sessions. In the Superpole Sykes was able to put a top flying lap together to take pole position and hold off a charging Checa. Biaggi did not make it into Superpole 3 leavingLaverty to take top honors for Aprilia.

Qualifying is over. What of the race.

Sykes and his Kawasaki continue to be fast qualifiers but Magny Cours is a track that will eat up his tyres over the length of a race. Look for him to dominate the early portions of the race but become road kill in the closing lap duels.

Biaggi's style is not particularly suited for this track yet in race conditions he may well fight to the front. I don't think that means a win but high enough to secure his title. If he falters Laverty will be ready to take the fight for Aprilia.

Checa and Rea are the two riders to watch. Their Ducati and Honda bikes are suited to this track as are their riding styles. They are in their element.

BMW should do well. Should. Will they? The S1000R is clearly up to the challenge yetI admit I am not so confident going into the race.

Haslam will do his best, in what think is the last race of a valiant season, but he is beat up. Race 1 is his race to shine if he can. By race 2 he may have petrol in the bikes tank but no gas left in his body.

Melandri should be the rider picking Sykes or one of the others off in the closing laps to take the win. Can he keep the black side down to the end of a race? He is a racer and loves to take racer chances. Judgment may be the obstacle keeping him off the podium.

World Superstock 1000 ÔÇô BMW Italia's Barrier takes Rider Championship

Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet STK Team) survived a wet track and the pressure of racing for the championship at his home round to finish second at Magny-Cours and give himself an eventual clear championship win.

His French countryman Jeremy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki) rode with confidence and pace in the wet to win the race, but main championship challenger Eddi La Marra (Barni Racing Team Italia Ducati) fell very early and lost his chance to get back into the race.

Another potential champion Bryan Staring (Team Pedercini Kawasaki) fell early and rode hard to try and get back into contention. He finished fifth in the race and eventually fourth in the championship.

The final points read Barrier 153, La Marra 130, Giarnoni 123, Staring 122.

The two previous seasons American Le Mans Series season-ending 1000-mile race was run with championships at stake. A fourth place finish in 2010 and a third place finish in 2011 secured BMW consecutive GT class manufacturers titles. The teams best Petit Le Mans finish of second came in 2009 when the event was shortened before the mid-point by torrential rains. The second day of the Morocco rally proved to be another sand-filled affair with a lot of navigation as the caravan rolled on through the treacherous dunes of Erg Chebbi. The Husqvarna Team by Speedbrain finished the day well with Barreda in fourth place just a minute away from a podium place. Barreda who made a mistake some nine km (six miles) into the race and dropped back several places, was able to deal well with the situation and managed to pull back to within three minutes of the winner. Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain won their first stage victory on the TE449RR in the Morocco Rally. Paulo Goncalves, the team’s Portuguese rider, took the Erfoud to Zagora stage that featured 291 km (182 miles) of special test. Goncalves finished just three seconds ahead of rival Rodrigues. A great performance too from Joan Barreda who came in fourth in the stage and now sits in third in the overall standings after three days of racing. Australian Matt Fish finished eighth, proving himself to be extremely quick in his first rally on the HusqvarnaTE449RR by Speedbrain. A special mention should go to Marc Coma who had an accident half way into the special test. We’d like to wish him a speedy recovery before the next Dakar 2013.
