2012 Nurburgring Free Practice 1st Session

The Althea Ducati ridden by Giugliano, not teammate Checa, found the legs to lead the first session at 'The Green hell'. Looking behind the lap times for both Giugliano and Checa the ideal lap time gaps are some of the biggest in the first 16 riders. To this handicapper it suggests Ducati may do better than I expected this weekend if it can keep those legs while finding that balance with handling their bike is known for. Expect to see Checa and other Ducati riders improve their grid positions in Qualifying 1.

Biaggi posted a P2 in this session and what you see in times is about what you will get from him. Laverty and Davies are farther down the FP1 grid but show room for improvement. If they can improve the lessons learned from their improvement process should help Biaggi. The Aprilia and its riders should not be discounted by any stretch of the imagination; yet, I sense they are vulnerable.

The MotoGP tests appear to have stirred his competitive juices resulting in a strong P4 for this session. The Honda rider has one of the smallest ideal to real lap time gaps. This is a good news bad news thing for Rea and Honda. The Bad news first. The gap suggesting he may qualify lower on the chart. At the same time. The good news in the first set of results is Rea appears to be set up to repeat the times lap after lap which is more important on Sunday than a one off time Saturday.

Suzuki finds itself as being Honda's clone. Camier has the smallest gap in the top 16 riders. Great news for Suzuki on Sunday. Can they find a way to uncork some more speed from the bike to achieve a better track position to race from on Sunday?

BMW is Yin and Yang. Melandri is P3 in this session and like Biaggi has a low gap time suggesting not much room for improvement on his own. Haslam is P9 on this session chart but has almost double the gap time of Melandri. Put the two riders together with a pit crew and mechanics that can sort this out and BMW may well be in position to put their stamp on the home race.

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport had a difficult but productive day as it started into its home event at the N??rburgring (GER). The iconic race track hosts the third from last round of the 2012 FIM Superbike World Championship. Factory rider Leon Haslam (GBR) finished todayÔÇÖs first qualifying practice in fifth on the provisional second row. Leon is ignoring a lot of pain caused by the injury to his left shoulder he suffered two weeks ago when he crashed in race two at ÔÇ£Moscow RacewayÔÇØ (RUS). Unfortunately, due to the pain, he could not ride as many laps as planned. His team-mate, Marco Melandri (ITA), qualified a provisional 12th. Marco had a crash in the early stages of the first qualifying practice when he lost control of his front tyre. However, his BMW S 1000 RR was not significantly damaged; Marco was able to ride back to the garage and continued the session after his bike was checked by his crew. In weather conditions that show Germany is having a late summer the BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet Superbike Team was on track for the first day of the 12th round of World Superbikes at the N??rburgring. Checa tops the Qualifying 1 in a fashion very reminiscent of his championship season. His Q1 pole time and his ideal lap, the sum of his best sector times, are identical. Althea and the Champ are dialed in at The Ring. Teammate Giugliano isn't quite as dialed in but has split the variance for the first session by more than half.

Both leading Ducati riders turned in 268.7 kph for session max speeds. Canepa on a Ducati in P16 also turned a 268.7 max speed. All riders between P2 and P16 posted max speeds between 272-279kph. Haslam was the fastest in that group with a top speed of 279.1. Melandri's 276.2 was third fastest.

The BMW press release intro describes this as a difficult day. Haslam's injuries no doubt were fine during the week but not fully tested in race conditions. In the first race of the season he showed he can race hurt and his current P5 confirms that. He did improve his lap time gap indicating he is getting closer to being dialed in; portending good things to come. Melandri's comments have something of a new twist but are consistent with Fridays past; he is never happy with the handling. Melandri increased his gap time and his standings dropped eight spots.

The pit crew found more speed for the BMW riders. Both scored incrementally faster max speeds. Dialing a race set up in is always tricky but it always seemed easier to dial back speed to improve handling than to find speed to use a strong handling chassis.

As things stand all four BMW riders follow are in the Superpole round. Q2 and a second free practice happen before the Superpole rounds. The time will be spent trying to find that balance between speed and handling.

Rea takes Honda to the top of Qualifying 2

Checa controlled the session for Ducati followed by Sykes on his Kawasaki until BMW's Melandri posted his best time two thirds of the way the session. Melandri showed great improvement over Fridays performance and held the provisional pole until the closing minutes when Rea pulled a hot lap to top the session. Teammate Haslam never made it off a provisional row two slot finishing P7.

Less than a second covers the field from P1 Rea to P15 Salom. Free practice will be used to solve problems for some. For others it will be a chance to work on race setup before the Superpole round sets the final grid. Based on the combined times Super pole should be hotly contested.

Superpole is a good news bad news story for BMW.

The good news is Sunday Melandri will start on the front row in P3. Haslam will start on the third row in P 12. The bad news is Haslam's P12 is the result of a crash in Superpole 2. I have no information about his condition at this time.

Front row start at the home round: Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport had a successful Superpole qualifying at N??rburgring (GER). Factory rider Marco Melandri (ITA) will start the third last round of the 2012 FIM Superbike World Championship from third on the grid, missing out on pole position by only 0.057 seconds. His team-mate Leon Haslam (GBR) was denied a top result by a crash in Superpole 2 and will start from 12th on his BMW S 1000 RR. In today’s second qualifying practice and free practice sessions both riders were already fast. Leon was still suffering pain from his injured left shoulder but overcame it again. At the start of Superpole 1, both riders went out on race tyres, setting the fastest and second fastest time. After four minutes, the session had to be red flagged due to a crash. After the restart both Marco and Leon stayed in the garage as their times qualified them comfortably for Superpole 2. In this second part, both riders went out on qualifying tyres. While Marco topped the time sheets again with a temporary new lap record of 1:54.056 minutes, Leon crashed in the last sector and had to settle for 12th. In the deciding Superpole 3, Marco went out on his second qualifying tyre and bettered his lap time to 1:53.912 minutes, qualifying third on the front row. The BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet Superbike Team completed the second day on track at N??rburgring, that determined the starting grid for tomorrow’s races. Michel Fabriziofinished Superpole 1 in 13th place and will start from the fourth row. Fifth row and seventeenth grid position is the starting place for Ayrton Badovini, who was out of top-16 at the end of Qualifying 2. Haslam is snake bit again. The crash was truly unfortunate. Neither BMW rider ended the day on top but they consistently spent more time in the top than the rest of the usual suspects. Slice and dice the qualifying numbers as much as I might this has me excited to get up at a ridiculous time on a Sunday morning for Race 1.

Melandri has a Row 1 starting position. Biaggi and Sykes may win the race to turn three but I don't think either will keep the lead the entire time. Melandri is in a great spot to pick them off.

Haslam has a bigger challenge but the outside of Row 3 is a good place to pick people off as the red lights go out and fight his way to the front.

Dosoli is concerns about pace leave me wondering how he defines that. Melandri and Haslam were turning in top speeds for the sessions. Max speeds do not seem to be the issues. Melandri turned very few laps so his perfect lap/ideal lap match is skewed but it was repeated in two sessions. Pace is not my question but their ability to manage their tyres over the race. They did it in Moscow and before so ….

2012 Race 1 N??burgring is GREEN HELL for BMW

As the red lights went out Sykes jumped to the early lead with Biaggi, Checa, Laverty and Melandri all within a second behind him. Fabrizio, BMW Italia rider, crashed starting the Roundel teams' decent into Green Hell.

Honda's Rea P5 was lighting up the board the best maximum speed and closing when the Green Hell sucked him up after two laps. Ducati's Giugliano took P1 in the first Free Practice and defeated the Green Hell, but fell as its victim after three laps. Checa was the next to suffer a crash taking him out of the hunt for the lead.

Up front Sykes was holding on to the lead while fending off hammering blows of speed from Biaggi. Melandri, as a result of Checa's crash and dealing with Laverty, was in P3. The duel with Laverty had left the pair a bit off the pace of the leaders but they were regaining speed and closing when my computer's live timing feed froze. I refreshed the screen and as the standings board sorted again Melandri was absent having crashed leaving Haslam the daunting task of catching the leaders while defeating the Green Hell.

Haslam qualified P8 and like his teammate had lost a spot after the start and was listed in P9 at the end of the first lap. The victims ahead of him would move him up in the standings to P5 but he was consistently loosing ground to the leaders. The Green Hell choose to torture him for the remainder of the race.

Baz on his Kawasaki would deal the next blow dropping him to P6 throwing him into an attack by Giutoli and his Ducati. Haslam would be defeated two laps latter. Camier and his Suzuki were next to punish Haslam. He would fight back for few laps and fall another spot after thirteen race laps were complete.

Up front Sykes was not able to hold off Biaggi for the length of the race. Biaggi over took Sykes while Haslam was falling to Camier. In short order Laverty and Davies would pass Sykes within a lap. Camier moved past Giuntoli for P6 moving Suzuki up a finishing spot in the race manufacturer point hunt. The Green Hell would move him to P5 as it took Baz and his Kawasaki as its final victim of the day.

Hopes of BMW putting a definitive stamp on the Manufacturer Championship instead were stomped on with an Aprilia 1-2-3.

The Green Hell shows no mercy in Race 2

Biaggi took race one. Something happened between his podium appearance and my knocking my coffee cup off the desk and he finished P13 in Race 2. Things continued darkly for BMW fans after that.

Sykes, Melandri and Davies formed a tight break away pack in the early laps of the race. Sykes was running for his life ahead of a carefully dueling Melandri and Davies. Things settled down until Melandri overtook Sykes for the lead in in sector 1 with 14 laps remaining.

Melandri was able to open a gap and hold it. Sykes began losing ground to Davies. With 12 laps remaining Melandri had 0.565 second lead on P2 Sykes, Davies was P3 3.2 seconds ahead of P4 Rea when he crashed. The Green Hell claimed another rider.

When the dust settled Davies had moved past Sykes to claim P1 leaving Rea in P3. The race challenge fell to Haslam shoulders. He was in P7. The BMW Italian contingent was far behind. Badovini was dithering in midfield while Fabrizio had Pit In behind his name.

Haslam had been dealing with fights in the second pack of riders. If he could break away could he reel in the leaders and pass other teams for manufacturer points. As the second half of Race 2 was beginning and I was sorting out the time challenge for him, Haslam's picture, number, team name and the word CRASH popped up on the screen.

Davies would hold on to the lead to win the race. Camier was able to briefly claim P2 for Suzuki but in the end lost it to Laverty but still claimed a podium P3 finish. Rea too had passed Sykes to finish P4. The Kawasaki rider had spent his tyres and energy coming home P5 just ahead of Checa and Ducati. Badovini came in P9 and last in the Manufacturer race.

Hamilton won the 2012 edition of Monza in strong fashion. Perez put Sauber on the podium P2 ahead of Alonso in P3. Massa, Raikkonen, Shcumacher, Rosberg, Di Test, Kobayashi and Ricciardo round out the points paying position. Vettel posted a DNF with engine problems and team orders forcing him to the side of the track on lap 48. Webber pulled a huge spin in Ascari a few lap latter. A trip to the pits for replacement tyres put him well down the grid.

When the lights went out Tim Reeves and Ashley Hawes let the rest of the field know what they wanted, they got a blistering start on their ÔÇ£The RelocatorÔÇØ LCR, Suzuki and led into the first corner, right with them was Ben and Tom Birchall on the Mitchells of Mansfield LCR, Yamaha, closely followed by Pekka Paivarinta and Adolf Hanni on the Team Suzuki Finland, LCR, Suzuki, they managed to get a good line into the corner but this caused Kurt Hock and Enrico Becker on their Hock Racing LCR, Suzuki to take a wider line but they held it all together and slotted in behind Pekka and Adolf, this gave Jorg Steinhausen and Gregory Cluze with their Steinhausen Racing LCR, BMW an opportunity to get right up with the leading four. It was good that all the 23 teams got a clean start for the final race....

Munich/Milano, 9 September 2012. The rider line-up of BMW Motorrad in the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship takes shape. Chaz Davies (GBR) will ride a factory BMW S 1000 RR next season becoming the new team-mate of Marco Melandri (ITA). The 25-year-old Welshman is the reigning World Supersport Champion and is competing in his debut year in the FIM Superbike World Championship in 2012. He has had some strong performances throughout the season and has already stood on the WSBK podium four times, most recently by winning todayÔÇÖs second race at the N??rburgring.
