Quick out of the box may be very important this weekend. The Silverstone weather forecast is improving. The Superpole Saturday has the worst outlook for wet conditions. If Superpole were a washout the combined Q1 and Q2 time sheet would determine the grid; therefore, Friday qualifying sessions take on extra importance.

    BMW 292pts
BMW heads into the Silverstone round P1 in the Manufacturer Championship. Much of the BMW back story will center around what comes next in the 2013 realignment plans, will Ben Spies be a Roundel Rider and what will happen with Haslam. In many sports this could be the formula for a dismal weekend. In SBK and this silly season it will no doubt play on peoples minds but I don't think it will be in a negative for the BMW team.

    The Bike
In my mind the S1000RRv2 has taken on the role of Yamaha in SBK. Silverstone was good to Yamaha in its last two seasons (six out of the twelve podium positions were taken by Yamaha riders). In 2010 Crutchlow took a double and 2011 saw Laverty and Melandri on the podium in both races. The bike seems ready.

    The riders
Melandri is coming off a double and heading to a track he has done well at. Haslam would seem to be the question mark but I think you would be wrong to do so. Last year he placed P4 and P8 on the S1000RRv1. The year before he was on a Alstare Suzuki. Rumors of Alstare's pending demise were surfacing and Haslam's future was in question. He pulled a P3 and P4 that year. Look at his performance at PI to start this year and his Alstare effort and you see Haslam responds well to pressure.

There may be a good deal of background noise to deal with but the bike should be ready and the riders wear earplugs and full face helmets. Look for a strong weekend for BMW. It will have to be for them to retain their lead in the Manufacturer hunt.

    Aprilia 290 pts
Biaggi comes into the weekend on top of the Rider standings with a 21 point lead over BMW's Melandri. He also should come in with a clear head about his future after signing a new contract with Aprilia. Aprilia may be the marque BMW needs to defend from but Laverty is the Aprilia rider I think they need to fear. Laverty's season is on the rise. In 2011 he rode his Yamaha to a pair of P2 finishes behind Checa's Ducati. The Aprilia and the teams riders will go wheel to wheel in and effort to regain the lead. They will be a real factor but not my biggest concern for the BMW team to worry about.

    Ducati 276.5 pts
Ducati is the long shot for this weekend. Silverstone has not been kind to the Italian team in the past two seasons. Checa did take the double last year but that is the only Ducati that has made it to take a podium finish out of the 12 possible steps open.

    Kawasaki 218 pts
Rain which could bring rules into play make me very nervous about Kawasaki. Sykes has a way of being fast out of the box; a potentially very important factor this weekend. Kawasaki and Sykes have been figuring out how to manage tyres over the length of a race making the an even bigger threat with a strong grid position. Baz has be on the rise adding a second fist to Kawasaki's punching power.

    Honda 193pts
Rea and his Honda are the other pair to watch this weekend. In 2010 he pulled a pair of P2 finishes while missing 2011 races altogether. They have been in the thick of things many of the race weekends. This is a good track for the Honda and a bobble from the competition could have Rea repeating Donington Race 2.

    Suzuki 72.5
Home court for the Suzuki team. Haslam did well here in 2010 scoring a P3 and P4 for Alstare. The FIXI Crescent team has been improving and comes into this weekend on something of a roll. No I don't see big finishes for them but they could play a role in where Ducati will finish the weekend.

Forget the background noise. This is the weekend for BMW to show they have matured as an organization. Rain is shrinking as a factor yet its timing if it shows it could be a really big deal. The competition is tough but BMW team goes into this weekend with the fare fighting chance of any fighter entering a championship ring.

I have been reading and re-reading the BMW realignment announcement along with all of the rumors about what it means and who is being talked to about contracts. I don't share the belief that the realignment means a contraction as much as it is a back office business move. As I understand it Melandri is under contract through 2013. Haslam is in negotiations. Spies is rumored ready to sign. Who will be the fourth rider?

Friday, 3 August | SBK - Silverstone Friday Qualifying

    SBK: Silverstone Friday Qualifying

    I Don't Get It

Sykes takes provisional pole, Checa P2, Guintoli P3 and Camier rounds out the front row

“For us today was all about working on the set-up rather than trying to do fast lap times. Right now we are not too worried and just working setting up the RR for this track.” Leon Haslam, P13 after Friday Q1 Session

All BMW team riders are currently positioned to advance to the Superpole round. Mixed weather conditions resulted in mixed track conditions and mid pack results for BMW.

Ayrton Badovini is the only BMW rider happy with his position at the end of Friday. He placed P17 in the Free Practice session in wet conditions. In Q1 he led the BMW troops placing P11.

Marco Melandri is the next BMW rider in P12. Silverstone's various track surfaces react differently to damp conditions. The qualifying session ended in dominantly dry conditions but Melandri struggled with chatter throughout the session. Chatter has been a recurring problem for Melandri which the team has found solutions for in the past. The question is do you go for a wet or dry setup solution?

Leon Haslam was hot Melandri's heels. That is if someone who was not trying to do fast lap times can be described as being hot on anyones heels. Friday sessions often find Haslam playing a cool hand of cards close to his leathers. I certainly hope he is hold a stronger hand than his P13 would indicate.

Michel Fabrizio currently makes the Superpole cut in P16. He shared Melandri's vibration problems but seems to be happier with the progress in dealing with it than his counterpart.

The methodical approach of using each session to improve setup and gain position makes a great deal of sense. You collect championship points for where you finish the race not where you qualify. The BMW riders have been able to advance past front row starters in the race for turn one and beyond so you may wonder what is the big deal?

This is the UK. The weather forecast has a 60% chance or rain on Saturday and a 30% chance for Sunday race day. Silverstone has been resurfaced at various times resulting in a track that appears to be affected even more than other tracks. This becomes important in light of the FIM racing rules.

    Superpole.
If the track is declared wet for Superpole the event is cut from the dry three round fight to a two round event that shortens the chances to recover a setup mistake.

    Race
I don't think anyone will argue that it is harder to score those championship points on Sunday from row one instead of row three or further back. On a normal race weekend I would cheer the Roundel riders on for the length of the race. Again this is the UK at Silverstone with a 30% chance of rain. Anywhere else the key word is chance. In the UK this forecast means it will rain 30% of the time and the only chance is when. This sets the stage for any number of combinations of events that could result in a short race taking away the possibility of the last lap heroics that are becoming a hallmark of the 2012 BMW team's podium finishes.

If I were the Benevolent Dictator of Racing for BMW Motorrad I would have wanted a greater sense of urgency this Friday ( Like Aprilia's Laverty who is currently P7). Chatter? Suck it up, if you give it more throttle maybe you will find harmonic balance along with a better lap time. Work on setup? The setup that counts is the one you are riding today and I pay you to turn in fast laps and maximize position.

I am not the BDR of BMW Motorrad. I am just a guy that babbles on in a thread on a web site. The guys who do run the racing team and get the big bucks for doing so are playing the long game without hedging there bets on Friday.

Sunday afternoon the results will be in.

Saturday, 4 August | Silverstone World SBK Qualifying 2

Mostly cloudy skies, a temperature of 63?? and light 9mph winds greeted the second qualifying session at Silverstone.

Maco Melandri found a solution to his chatter problems of Friday and was able to turn in a pair of fast laps that allowed him to lead the field in the opening segment of the session. Tom Sykes was able to respond and continues to lead the field at Silvstone. Melandri was able to hold on to P3. Teammate Haslam had a neutral result finishing P13 once again.

The FIXI Crescent Suzuki riders turned in a strong performance. John Hopkins finished the session in P2 ahead of Melandri while Leon Camier was right behind him in P4.

The Ducati contingents were led by P5 Carlos Checa. Checa's position slipped from his lead of the opening Free Practice lead and Q1 P2 finish. Two other Ducatis were in the top 8. Sylvain Guintoli took P6 and Max Berger P8 to round out the provisional row 2.

Jonathan Rea was the first Honda on the chart but back in P14. Hiroshi Aoyama was only able to manage a P20. Rea was not expected to be a front row contender but the middle of row 4 at this point is not quite the expected performance for the Honda.

With an eye toward the Manufacture Championship the good news for BMW is Aprilia appears to be having its own Silverstone teething problems. Eugene Laverty ended the session in P9 well ahead of teammate Max Biaggi in P16. Results along these lines would have BMW improving its lead on Aprilia while loosing some ground to others.

As the session clock worked its way toward the 10 minutes remaining point teams headed to the paddock. The closing minutes of session 2 normally find some teams desperately scratching for tenths of a second to claw their way into the Superpole round. Chart leaders may be content sit in their garage and tinker in preparation for Superpole, while others will use the time to make one last statement to the competition.

This Saturday at Silverstone found all the riders in the garage reminded of the urgency of turning in strong times early. The session started with good weather conditions. With just under eleven minutes remaining in the session rain began to fall in Sector 5. By the ten minute mark it was falling on Sector 4 as well. With little or no hope of improving dry condition times the session ended with no one on the track.

Silverstone - FIM Superbike World Championship – Superpole

The weatherman delivered a wet as expected. Temperatures in the mid 60??s and winds in the 13mph range with 'light rains'. Keep in mind the definition of light rain is different in the UK than it is in Fly-Over-Land. The end result, no matter how you define light, was a Wet Rules Superpole session. The shift from three to two rounds and the fact only eight riders advance from SP1 to SP2 puts extra pressure on riders in the first round.

Honda and Aprilia suffered most in the wet conditions. Rea continued to his midfield performance scoring a P10 and not advancing to SP2. More important to BMW's hopes this weekend is that Rea will start along side Biaggi in P11 on row 3 and ahead of Laverty in P14 on row 4.

Four Ducatis, one Suzuki, one Kawasaki and two BMWs advanced to SP2. Clearly the conditions were moving in Ducati's direction. Of the I4 bikes Suzuki's balance of power and weight is perhaps the closest to the Duc. The question for Kawasaki and BMW was how and when to make their move.

Ducati's led the early portion of the sesion with Checa trading fast laps with Camier and his Suzuki. Sykes made his move as the first set of hot laps was ending scoring a P4.

Shortly after live timing recycled and showed his new position he lit the board up again. This time it was the announcement that he had crashed. He did get back to the pits. He did not go out again and I have no report of his or the bikes condition.

Melandri P7 and Haslam P8 at the time, were heading into the pits. As I noted this the board lit up with the news that Checa had crashed after his third hot lap. Like Sykes he would make it back to the pits but I have no news of rider or bike.

Briefly everyone was shown as Pit In on the live timing board. Would the session continue or would officials red flag it? Red is the operative color, in this case the color of blood. There was color and sent of blood in the rain water on the track and riders returned to the track to try and take advantage of the crashes to gain positions. The return was in slow motion due to conditions. The BMW riders were listed as SLOW in all three sectors as they made their first round of the post crash track. The first timed laps showed them +/- six seconds of the four minute mark. On the next orbit times would come down.

At the 3'50 remaining mark the track took another rider. Giugliano had been in P1. He crashed and would drop to P5 as a result of his fall. Times and positions changed as the clock ran out.

Leon Haslam crossed the line just after the checquered flag fell. His time made the board recycle to put him in P1. Haslams hold on the pole would not last long. He will start the races on the outside of row 1. Teammate Melandri P6 launch his attack on the front from the middle of row 2.

The BMW Motorrad Team riders are in good position to deal with what the weatherman has in store for the field. They will need to balance racing exuberance, wet weather skills and hope for the right setup from their crew. The current forecast is variable clouds with showers and scattered thunderstorms. High 67F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 80%. In racing terms this translates into Crash Warnings and the chance of Red Flagged races.

Saturday, 4 August | Silverstone ÔÇô Superpole Update II

    Silverstone SBK Superpole

    Reaction

Silverstone ÔÇô Qualifying Practice 2 & Superpole.

    Saturday, 4th August 2012.
Weather conditions: Cloudy in the morning, rain showers and some sun in the afternoon.
    Temperature: Air: 18 ÔÇô 20 ??C, Track: 24 ÔÇô 32 ??C
Number of riders participating: 22/23 from 13 teams
Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) 2:05.350 min
Fastest lap Superpole 2: Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert) 2:20.810 min

The two factory riders from Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport bravely fought the tricky and dangerous conditions in todayÔÇÖs Superpole qualifying. Local hero Leon Haslam (GBR) will start his home races at Silverstone (GBR) from the front row. He qualified fourth for the tenth round of the 2012 FIM Superbike World Championship. His team-mate Marco Melandri (ITA) will start on his BMW S 1000 RR from sixth place on the second row. The weather was changing and unpredictable again with clouds, some sun and many rain showers. The Superpole was declared wet, meaning only two sessions of 20 minutes each took place.

In a nail-biting and closely fought Superpole 1, Leon and Marco qualified for the top eight who progressed into the deciding second part. In Superpole 2, another rain shower made the conditions very tricky with patches of water on the track and very slippery sections. Several riders crashed while fighting for the top positions on the grid. Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini (both ITA) of the BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet SBK Team will start tomorrowÔÇÖs races from 15th and 18th respectively.

    Leon Haslam:
    Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: 2:06.544 min (P13) / Fastest lap FP: 2:06.231 min (P9) / Fastest lap Superpole 2: 2:21.613 min (P4)

ÔÇ£I am really happy. It is always nice to start from the front row, especially at the home race. We just had two or three laps of wet weather testing on Friday and then I didnÔÇÖt have a good feeling but the guys worked really hard and every lap we did and every time we changed the bike we made an improvement. The conditions were difficult. Some were pushing maybe a little bit too much too early so there were a lot of crashes. We built up and went faster with every lap. When I crossed the chequered flag I was P1, which was nice for a short while! To have a front row start tomorrow is important and I am looking forward to the races. The target is always to win. We still have some more work to do before the races but I am feeling very comfortable. I think the biggest decisions will be on the weather.ÔÇØ

    Marco Melandri:
    Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: 2:06.106 min (P3) / Fastest lap FP: 2:06.150 min (P7) / Fastest lap Superpole 2: 2:21.960 min (P6)

ÔÇ£This was another very tough day. The conditions were really difficult with rain showers and changing grip levels on different parts of the track. In the dry we could not have hoped for a start position like this as we were struggling again with chattering. In the wet conditions the Superpole was not too bad but it was not easy. Just before I went out on my last run it started raining very heavily in the second sector. I was really scared of aquaplaning so I chose to take it easy. Tomorrow will be difficult, as you never know what the weather will be like here. If it is dry tomorrow morning, we will make a small change to the set-up to be ready for all conditions.ÔÇØ

Andrea Dosoli (Head of Race Operations):
ÔÇ£Overall I am pleased with the job done by our riders and the crews. Both Leon and Marco will start tomorrowÔÇÖs races from the front two rows. These are good grid positions considering where we started from yesterday. Both crews worked hard to improve the performance of the RR. In dry conditions the steps made were quite good, although there is still room for improvement, mainly for the race pace. Both Leon and Marco need to be a few tenths quicker to fight with Carlos Checa and Tom Sykes, and the crews will work hard to get there. I am very happy with LeonÔÇÖs performance and result today. We will continue to work hard to get the best possible results tomorrow and I am sure we will be competitive with both riders.ÔÇØ

Sunday, 5 August | 2012 Silverstone SBK Update

Silverstone - FIM Superbike World Championship - Warm Up

Warm up session times are so confusing; especially on a race weekend like this. 1-2-3 on the warm up chart are 8-7-11 on the starting grid. Rankings would seem to have little meaning due to the drastic differences in conditions the times were run. The benchmark to sort the warm up lot would be the best qualifying time of the combined Qualifying 1|2 set by Tom Sykes: 2'05.350.

    BMW
Both BMW riders improve on their QP times, lead the pack of riders in the 2'06 range but do not move into the 2'05 range. This can be interpreted in a variety of ways. My take is a slightly conservative set up for the race to manage tyres over the distance and concerns for possible weather changes.

    Aprilia
Biaggi has struggled all weekend to find speed. He has found it on Sunday when it counts. Where he finishes will depend on how he is able to deal with the 10 riders that line up ahead of him on the grid while defending from those behind. The 10 ahead are a very mixed bag due to the Wet Superpole. Laverty is in a similar position. He is P8 in warm up and P14 on the grid.

    Ducati
Smrz took Superpole for Ducati. Checa took a tumble and starts on row two but shows his speed. The racing weekend seems to be headed in Ducati's favor. With several strong rides a podium would not be a surprise.

    Kawasaki
Sykes and his Kawasaki present the Green threat again. Top of the QP 1|2 time chart but on row 2 for the start of the race. The need to battle to the front will increase the demands on his tyres, which are always in doubt. Baz, a podium finisher in the last event is facing a tougher learning curve this weekend.

    Honda
The Honda riders have been mid field at best and further back. The appear to be a threat to no one but themselves this weekend.

    Suzuki
Camier and his Suzuki are having a strong weekend. The clich?® of everything coming together clearly is apt and they appear on the verge of a podium.

    Spoiler Alert

Silverstone - FIM Superbike World Championship ÔÇô Race 1

Race 1 began with Haslam leading the first lap with Smrz, Sykes and teammate Melandri in close pursuit. Before the lap was entered into the record books Norino Brignola crashed and the race was red flagged. I have no information on his condition at this time. With a little more than a half an hour delay the race was restarted.

Checa took the early lead in the restarted full length race. By my count the lead would change hands at least seven times with Sykes, Haslam, Baz, Badovini, Fabrizio taking sometimes multiple turns at holding the lead before Baz took final turn and the race.

The race was full of dueling up and down the chart that kept the live timing board's sort feature busy. Along with the duels came crashes and no doubt controversy.

With four laps remaining in the race Haslam was in P1 with nearly a two second lead over Camier. At that ime Baz, Sykes, Fabrizio, Rea, Checa, Biaggi , Badovini and Melandri followed. Camier crashed and the order juggled in short order. Haslam had the lead but Baz with an open track in front of him was leading the charge of the followers and closing.

With two laps remaining Haslam was shown in the lead with Badovini in P2 as the lap began. By the time the Sector 1 chart lit up Baz was in the lead and Haslam was back in P6.

The final lap began with Fabrizio listed on top of the field, Rea in P2 and Baz P3. Then Biaggi crashed and the field resorted to its final result.

An unexpected double podium for BMW taken by BMW Italia. How it was taken will be grist for the press release / analysis mill. The result of all this racing has BMW increasing their lead in the manufacture championship.

    Ducati 287.5 pts.
    Kawasaki 243.5 pts.
    Honda 206 pts.

Very pleased to see John Hopkins qualify so well , I still believe in the guy after all he has been through. He needs a better ride than what he currently has IMHO and then he could be a top 7 runner consistently.

    Race 1 Leftovers

Worldsbk.com: Kawasaki Racing team rider Loris Baz won his first SBK race after weather conditions played an ever-changing role in the first 18-lap race of the day. The first attempt to run it was halted after two separate crashes, and the restart was declared wet, but with a mostly dry track surface visible over the length of the circuit. Light rains came and went as the lead changed a bewildering number of times, but with a few laps to go the rains got even heavier and riders movements forward and back got even more frenzied.

Over the line for the last time, Baz won by 0.383 seconds, with BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet duo Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini second and third respectively and Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) was fourth. As Badovini crossed the line he fell on the edge of the track and the following Rea also crashed into Badovini's machine, but after each had crossed the line. Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) was fifth, but championship leader Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) was a late faller and he no-scored.

Silverstone - FIM Superbike World Championship ÔÇô Race 2

Race 2 was a race for the record books, literally. The Race 1 delays put Race 2 in the heart of the rain. It may have begun as a race but was nothing more than a high speed commute from the green lights to the red flag. The only thing in question was what detours you might take along the way or the length of your commute. For the 'fisnishers' the commute ended when the riders had completed enough laps for the race to be called a race when red flagged. Four riders were not able to complete the race. By my count there were seven crashes. For Baz fortunately his crash came lap 9 after the red flag set the standings based on the lap 8.

I will collect reports for Monday's post. I am just pleased everyone appears to have come out alive.

BMW comes home with a double podium in Race1 and the knowledge it can race with the field in damp conditions. It also learned its riders have the good sense not to risk their lives in a highspeed commute to a red flag.

Along with the double podium it does go home in P1 of the Manufacture Standings.

    BMW 316 pts.
    Aprilia 302.5 ppts.
    Ducati 300 pts.
    Kawasaki 353.5 pts
    Honda 209.5 pts
    Suzuki 75.5

Teams and officials have three weeks to sort this out before their next race in Moscow where the weather conditions are temps in the 70s and light rain. Where have I heard that before?

I have wasted a morning and am headed out to play.

His team-mate, local hero Leon Haslam (GBR), was on course to win race one, but once again had bad luck and had to settle with sixth and 17th in the two races...More
