2012 European GP – Valencia
A Doublemint Race sans the minty taste

Two disclosures as I start this race ramble.

I am a tifosi but Alonso leaves me cold. I am a huge Vettel fan and have been since his first F1 race for BMW filling in for Kubica after his horrific accident.

I really like the city of Valencia. It may not be my favorite spot in Spain but I have enjoyed my time there. I really hate the race held there. I wanted to like it when it was added to the F1 Calendar but since watching the second practice session of the first race I have thought it the pits. The 2012 edition has done little to change my opinion.

The 57 lap 2012 version of the European GP neatly breaks down into two 28 lap races. Sebastian Vettel was the run away winner of the first 28 lap sprint but walks away empty handed after retiring on lap 34. Alonso won the second half and took the top step of the podium to become 2012's first repeat winner.

Vettel dominated the first half of the half of the race. After winning the race to turn three he consistently added a second a lap to his lead. He gave up a few seconds during his pit stops but began adding them back again when he would return.

Webber, Vettel's Red Bull teammate, started the race in P19 but steadily moved up the standings finishing in P4. Newy's improvements to the RB missile for the Valencia race made it a break away car in race trim.

The first 2012 Valencia race ended with Vettel holding over a thirty second lead on P2 as he dove into the pits as the safety car was deployed after an incident between Kovalaenen and Vergne. To this point Vettel had set some fast laps but was not the fast lap holder at the time. His dominate lead was built on consistent lap times. His lead would disappear when he returned to the race and assume the lead of the parade behind the safety car.

Race machines are fragile things and F1 cars particularly so. They are pressed hard on the track and only really slow for a few seconds in the pits. Often they will hold together just fine in race conditions until they are forced to cool down behind an extended yellow flag. This was the case for Vettel in Valencia.

When the safety car pitted Vettel was able to win the race to the first turn but shortly slowed and yielded his lead to Alonso as he retired in disgust from the race. Alonso assumed the lead on lap 34 and held it to the end. In the process he became the first repeat winner of the F1 2012 season.

The tufosi in me wants to say something along the lines that it was a 57 lap race and Ferrari was in P1 at the end of the race. Did the best car win the race? I can't get a couple things out of my mind. Vettel and his Red Bull were able to open and build a lead lap after lap. Alonso was able to establish and defend just under a four second lead in the second half. Webber's race from P19 to P4 reinforces my doubt. At the end of the day I just don't have that doublemint fresh taste in my mouth after the race.

However you second guess or slice and dice it Alonso and Ferrari were the victors in Valencia.

Grosjean in a Lotus was tipped by many to be the eighth different winner for 2012. However, it would be Kimi Raikkonen and his Lotus that would take the second step of the European GP podium. A solid effort by both and fans have to wonder when a Lotus driver will take the top podium step.

Micheal Schumacher may go to bed tonight feeling like the Valencia victor. He finished. That alone is an accomplishment for the former champ. He finished P3 and in the process took his first podium.

Red Bull leaves Valencia leading the Manufacturer Championship standings. In the Driver Championship Vettel drops to fourth after retiring and leaving Valencia empty handed. Webber on the strength of his P4 finish moves to P2 in the driver standings.

Alonso opens up his lead in Driver Championship while Ferrari remains in fourth in the Manufacturer Championship. This standings divergence puts more pressure on Massa. Massa and Kobayashi tangled during lap 33. Kobayashi retired his Sauber and will take a five position grid penalty at the start of the British GP. Massa never fully recovered and finished P15 one lap down to his teammate.

Force India delivered on the pre race hype. Hulkenberg finsihed P5 and di Resta P7 putting both Force India cars in points paying positions.

Who gets the final point for P10 is in doubt as I write this. Williams will get the point but the question is will Maldonado or Senna deliver it for to the team. In the closing laps Maldonado and Hamilton were dueling for position. The two touched and Hamilton was driven into the barrier and retired from the race. Race stewards announced they would investigate the incident after the race. It is very likely the standings will shuffle.

The discussions about money and rules taking place off track take on added importance. Seven different manufacturers placed cars in the top ten points positions. The time spread on the times shown on the results is not fully indicative of the fights taking place during the race that lead to the results. Teams tighten up as a formula nears its end. The current formula is no exception. In the process it has taken eight races to get a repeat winner and the racing behind P1 has been aggressive and close. The new F1 formula rules and budgets continue to be worked on. Lets hope they don't screw the action up in the process.

The British Grand Prix at Silverstone is the next stop for the Formula One circus.

I liked the race today.
The track is a nice layout, very fast for a street circuit.
I prefer natural landscape tracks over street venues, but after Monaco I think Valencia is a good one.

Will be interesting to see what actually failed on both Renault's, if the truth actually is disclosed.

Louis, Louis , Louis ; when will you ever learn that grit and cajones are no substitute for better rubber on the ground. At this level even the lesser mortals do not quake in your presence.
Will be interesting to hear what the stewards have to say about the incident . Especially since he was already under investigation for some yellow flag infraction.

I laughed out loud when Michael Schumacher said he did not know he had a podium finish. Also Alonso's comment about "we had car trouble" when he did not drive back to park ferme'.

NAPCAR is about to begin so i need to get settled in for my Sunday afternoon siesta.

I made the Race Update post as the race was starting on Fox. It is the first race I have seen on TV for some time and must admit it was packaged in a very exciting manner. For a variety of reasons I still don't like the venue but no matter where they are held I enjoy a good race and this was a good racing event.

My guess is we will find out 90% of what really happened with Vettel's Red Bull and reasonably assume the rest. The Lotus will be another thing.

The stewards and I are not as hard on Hamilton as you. Maldonado was penalized for the crash with Hamilton. I felt he was aggressively but legally defending his then podium position. Yes he had been investigated for a yellow flag violation but he had been cleared and told that by this closing lap incident. Worn out tyres on the McLaren were just to big a temptation for Maldonado and he thought with his right foot instead of his head.

For a variety of reasons it did not surprise me that Schumacher would be confused about the podium finish. Remember he was in P5 when the Hamilton Maldonado accident moved him to the podium. When he came on the scene of that incident my guess he was spending just enough time looking forward while spending more time keeping Webber in his mirrors and safely behind him. I doubt he or his team in the pits knew who was involved in the accident and what it meant to him. Finally I think it is an indication of his age and the effect of the heat and strain of competing at this level of open wheel racing.

Will Vettel's problem be found and cured? How will Webber qualify. Given the first half race dominance if he or his teammate could repeat that performance the tables would be drastically turned once again. The rest of the field is closing up. Ferrari, Lotus, McLaren, Mercedes, Williams, Sauber and now Force India could take the top step if the RB chargers are someway held in check. All in all this should portend a very good race at Silverstone.

Mercedes could quite F1, but will it be allowed to?

Manufacturers of both engines and chassis have come and gone from the premier open wheeled series. Mercedes has previously left the F1 racing grid. The treat to leave as a result of corporate governance rules should not be taken lightly. The sport has rumbled along until it could pit and find new manufacturers to take the place of those leaving. BMW abruptly left its ownership/supplier role with BMW Sauber and life ticked on in Hinwil all be it it was in damage control mode for some time. While the press is currently focusing on Mercedes participation decision is there a bigger story brewing with Bernie Ecclestone?

Ecclestone is at the center of the current controversy after being sighted as a 'co-perpetrator' in the sale of Bayerische Landesbank shares of the Formula One Group to CVC Capital Partners Ltd 9cvc.com). The accusation against Ecclestone comes out of the trial of trial against former BayernLB Chief Risk Officer Gerhard Gribkowsky. The verdict in that trial appears very predictable. As a result the defense is in negotiations for a plea bargain. The result has been the accusation, but no formal charge, of Ecclestones participation in the crime.

Rather than a Mercedes F1 exit could this be the end of Bernie Eccelstone's reign as Formula One el Supremo?

Ecclestone can be given the credit/blame for making F1 one of the world's most recognizable sporting series. In the process he has made himself and many others very rich. Love him or hate him, love or hate F1, Ecclestone has been the 'key man' driving force behind F1 for decades. Key Men are the entrepreneurial darlings of the growth phase; Ecclestone and F1 have had a very long growth phase.

While there is no doubt of Ecclestone's continued sense of being driven are those that surround him at the same business point. Or, have the other current share holders in the Formula One Group, potential IPO investors, the FIA and other series participants reached a point where protecting gains is more important than any growth Ecclestone may still be able to deliver?

The pending IPO is the payday for Ecclestone and many of F1's investors. Ecclestone's age along with his role in a post IPO F1 have been open for discussion.

F1 has expanded its world wide basis but remains a European series at its roots. Associated European elegance is the cache holding an F1 race brings to many of the world venues. For local promoters this can be as important as anything on track that actually happens during a race weekend. The European economic crisis looms over every aspect of F1 within the European ring and the ripple effect could be tsunami like as it expands world wide.

The Jean Todt the current head of the FIA has been very quiet. F1 is the association's biggest money maker. The stormy relationship between Ecclestone, the FIA and anyone who has headed it is the stuff of legends. What I have not seen mentioned is the any discussion of the FIA sporting rules. During the Singapore Crash scandal several big paddock names were ousted and banned. French courts overturned those bans on appeal. Subsequently the FIA changed some of its sporting rules to expand the binding code of ethics. The contractual relationship between the FIA as sanctioning body and its designated open wheel racing promoter, The Formula One Group, could be at risk as a result.

The European economic crisis has hit F1. Once promoters and team owners seemed to be able to tell potential sponsors to step aside because their bushel basket of money offered was smaller than the guy behind them.Such is not the case sponsorship for both is becoming increasingly difficult to come by. As result I would suspect investors and participants are looking for ways to consolidate their positions to protect gains and weather the coming economic storm. From the board room to the paddock 'investors' may see Ecclestone as an unnecessary risk to their survival.

Bernie Ecclestone, if nothing else, is a survivor. Mercedes may decide to go through the motions of leaving F1; it has bvfore. Yet I have a growing sense that the back story of what happens to F1 after his departure for any reason is a question of how soon not if and the one F1 fans should be watching.

If memory serves, didn't Bernie transfer all or most of his personal stake in F1 to his wife Slavica a while back ?

Was this before he got involved with Gribowski and the bribery charges that followed ?

I also remember reading somewhere that Bernie and Slavica had split and he was manuvering to get hold on what he had previously thought was protected by transfering it to her.

The plot thickens, could make a good screen play out of it all , and then Bernie can become a movie mogul

Corona, CA – June 27, 2012 – It’s time again for Summer X Games and the world’s best off-road motorcycle racers are ramping up for the Moto X Enduro X event. Haslam wants to break the win duck.
Biaggi is hoping for a breakaway and may well get it.
Melandri will play racer and try to improve on his 2011 performance.

SBK is at Motorland Aragon this weekend.

Ducati 222.5 pts.
Still on top by a point and a half going into the weekend. Coming out I expect them to be behind but where?

Aprilia 221 pts.
I expect Aprilia to be on top of the heat when the SBK circus packs up on Sunday. How they do it is the only question. In 2011 Aprilia took four of the six podium steps. Biaggi was P2 in R1 and P1 in R2. I look for Aprilia to be on the podium where is the question.

BMW 197 pts.
BMW needs a good performance out of its riders. Melandri took a Pi and P2 in 2011 astride a Yamaha. A repeat would be great and improvement even better. Haslam wants to break the duck but needs to improve from a pair of P9 finishes in 2011. His performance this season may lack a win but Aragon seems Haslam friendly. P2 in the manufacture hunt is in reach IF...

Honda 176 pts
Rea is coming on strong for Honda. After a strong private test at Assen during the break they will be in the hunt but not for the top of the podium.

Kawasaki 170.5
The last round had Team Green running backwards in the standings. The claim after Aragon tests is they have found the problem with tyre management. If this is the case the Kawasaki is a big threat to the plans of Biaggi, Melandri and Haslam. Podium finishes for them, how high is the question.

[Suzuki 56.5 pts
Aragon should be a good track for the Suzuki. I don't expect much but hope they give Ducati trouble.

motomatters.com: Aragon WSBK Saturday round up

Sykes took his sixth superpole but that does not add any points to Kawasaki's championship tally. Haslam and Melandri are in good grid positions to win the race to turn 3 and be the leaders after lap one.

Tyres remain the big question for all the racers on Sunday.
Has Kawasaki solved their tyre race duration management problem? My guess is they have improved but the heat and racing conditions will be to much for Sykes and his Kawasaki over the length of a race.
Biaggi has a winning history at Aragon but rides with very aggressive style. Will he use up his rubber attacking or defending before the end of the race? Laverty may be the Aprilia front row rider to watch.
I still have high hopes for the BMW riders. If I had not spent my coffee change on doughnuts this morning I would put my money where my mouth, or keyboard in this case, is.

Bautista Bonehead,,

That move Bautista made taking out himself and Lorenzo in T1, L1 might be the most inept riding display I've ever seen in MotoGP. There was less than a zero chance he could make the corner on that line at that speed that was at least 10 mph bove anyon else on the track at their impact point Even the generally uncritical commentators called him out for the dumb move. A true sportsman would at leat refund his pay for making such a stupid error that embarassed himself and his team.
Wonder what Lorenzo had to say- he didn't look very happy....

MODS= time to break this thread into more manageable bits- loading time has become absurd.

bikesportnews.com: Checa expects tough time in hot conditions

Motorland Aragon Race 1

Sykes won the race to turn three and lead the first lap. Laverty lead teammate Biaggi followed by BMW's Melandri. Haslam had a terrible start and dropped to P8 from his P4 front row starting position. With two laps complete Laverty overtook Sykes for the lead and during the following lap would be passed by Biaggi and Melandri.

As the third lap closed Biaggi overtook Laverty for the lead. Melandri would pass Laverty as the fourth lap began. By the end of the race Biaggi and Melandri, in a two bike break away, would open a gap of almost 8 seconds over the rest of the field.

Melandri pressured Biaggi. Melandri set fast laps on 6 and 7; however, he seemed to be setting up Biaggi more than trying to pass. The pass would come on lap 12 but Biaggi would regain the lead on the next lap.

Behind them BMW Italia's Badovini had made his way up to P4 and was reeling in Sykes. Over the following laps the gap closed between the two until you could see Badovini testing for a pass. The final attack coming on the last lap proved terminal for both riders. Badovinin appeared to loose the front tyre and clipped Sykes rear taking both out in the process.

In front Melandri continued to pressure Biaggi after giving up the lead back on lap 3. This will no doubt be a great duel to watch on the tube. It was on live timing board. Biaggi consistently turned in greater trap speeds than Melandri but the BMW kept catching the Aprilia hundredth by hundredth. With 5 laps remaining Melandri took the lead and appeared to be opening a bit of a gap. Apparently Biaggi needed to catch his breath and regroup. He began his attack and would regain the lead as the penultimate lap came to a close. Melandri pressed but was unable to recover.

With the Sykes / Badovini crash Checa moved to P3 to take the last step of the Race 1 podium.

In the manufactures championship race results: P1 Aprilia, P2 BMW, P3 to Ducati after the Sykes crash, P4 Suzuki, P 5 Honda. P6 to Kawasaki but they did not have a bike in the races as the checkered flag fell.

This result puts Aprilia with 246 on top of Ducati with 238.5 points. BMW Is in third with 217 well ahead of Honda's 178 points. The Sykes / Badovini crash helped Ducati.

After they turn wrenches and tape up the riders Motorland Aragaon Race 2 will do its best ot mix this up again. Will Melandri trade spots with Biaggi on top as they did last year? What happened with Haslam? Can he recover? Will Sykes be back?

I will have a round up late this evening.

The end would not be decided until the last lap. After multiple lead changes Melandri would take the lead in the second interval of the track and hold it for the win.
