Back to the future +++ 25 years of the BMW Z1.
06.06.2012
It was a true quantum leap: when BMW unveiled the Z1 to the international motoring press in the Italian town of Punta Ala back in autumn 1988, its direct predecessor was parked in the hotel’s inner courtyard – a BMW 507 from the late 1950s, the last time the BMW model range had included a two-seater sports car. The leap through time to the Z1 was in fact even greater than the intervening period of 30 years or so would suggest. Its avant-garde solutions looked way ahead into the future – indeed, some of its most revolutionary ideas are as unique now as they were then...More

Misano World Circuit
The Misano World Circuit is a mix of straight lines that bend in sweeping arcs broken up by hard turns. Speeds will be down from the flirting with 200mph at Miller Motorsport Park (MMP) but the circuit seems to favor power a bit over handling.
Weather is always a factor in racing. For a change instead of concerns for rain and damp tracks teams will be dealing with sunny skies, high temperatures and their impact on tyre traction/wear and air/fuel mixtures.
Manufacture Championship standings and pontificating going into the race weekend:
Ducati 148.5 points
Ducati is in the lead coming into this weekend. Where it will be on Monday remains to be seen but there is a very good chance it will not be on the top. Misano is not a Ducati friendly track. Checa took a double in 2011 but that was part of a magical season for rider and team. Looking at race results it was a long look down the chart for the second Ducati to cross the finish line. At this point in the season Checa is struggling. While there are many scenarios that could lead to a good weekend result for Ducati I wouldn't put my money on them. Ducati's standing on Monday will be the result of what Checa and Guintoli do not the bike. If you like betting on long odds Ducati is your bike.
BMW 176 points
The arc of any racing season for a team has key points along that arc. I believe Misano is a key point on the BMW Team season arc. The maturation of team managers and crews will be the untold storyline of where BMW is on Monday. Badovini (2011: P8, P4) on the S1000RR v1.7 was BMW's Misano strong man in 2011. In 2012 Melandri comes into the weekend in P2 in the rider standings. The press will focus on him and P6 Haslam. Truth be told on the S1000RR v2.7 any of the BMW riders could be the Roundel strong man this weekend. Monday press releases will praise riders. Riders will demure while taking the praise. They should for this is a team track.
Qualifying:
BMW riders on Sunday have done great jobs at overcoming Saturday qualifying failures. The margin for overcoming Saturday errors is much slimmer at Misano. The pressure on team managers and crews to give their riders the setup and tyres to advance to Superpole 3 is immense. How they deal with that challenge will be the key to where BMW is on Monday. The teams are standing at the threshold. Will they follow their solid bike and riders through to the next stage of what could be a spectacular season for the Roundel?
Tyre Management:
I HATE tyre talking about tyre management but here I go again.
Each team draws the same allotment of tyres to use and manage from Friday FP1 to the end of R2 on Sunday. Team management appears to take a conservative approach from Friday morning to Saturday evening. This has left riders with relatively poor grid spots to overcome on Sunday. The major problem on Sunday is this strategy has put riders in duels with other teams and teammates while leaders either cruise away or are able to manage their race tyres life to the best advantage.
Team manager decisions between Friday morning and Saturday evening are part brinksmanship and part discernment. The input of crews, mechanics through statisticians, are important in this process. The combination gives riders the thousandths of seconds in lap times that lead to tenths and better grid positions to riders. Monday will have everyone talking about riders and where they finished; I will be trying to figure out on which side of the threshold the team is standing.
BMW Italia:
The Italian troop must ride hard this weekend. Their 2011 successes were the result of their team effort and the dual track S100RR v1 bike development approach the Mothership appeared to take. This is 2012. If they are not competing for P1 their role is to defend their German team counterparts by keeping other manufacturers in duels behind them. They have not been holding up their end of the deal. Misano is a track they can and must do this at. Badovini and Fabrizio are solid riders. They have a solid weapon to duel with.
Aprilia 171 points
I think of the arc line of a team's season as a trend line derived from a sine wave. The Aprilia sine wave is fairly tight and, in my mind at least, forms a high mesa. This mesa has been sufficiently tall enough that only Ducati could climb the walls and stand on top. That is until MMP when BMW moved past them in the standings. The problem for BMW team and fans is Misano should be a high point on the Aprilia S curve. How high that point is will be a result of the Aprilia team and how they deal with internal issues and external challenges. I expect podium finishes for Aprila. Which step of Sunday's podiums they stand on is why they hold the races.
Kawasaki 148.5 points
The Zed and Sykes at Misano should be a winning combination, at least on paper. This is the combination that is a major threat to BMW hopes. I expect they will snatch the headlines until Sunday evening. Kawasaki should qualify strongly; however, they have not shown a consistent ability to take Saturday advantages gained and turn them into an advantage if forced to duel on Sunday. A Sunday Kawasaki breakout will be difficult for any team to overcome. I don't see that happening. Rather I see them dueling hard for P4.
Honda 145 points
I find myself quietly rooting for Honda to finish just behind BMW this weekend. HERESY I know but that is what I am hoping for. Yes Rea and his Castrol Honda have become the combination many on this forum love to hate in a post Donington era but BMW's ascendance to P2 in the manufacturer standings is in part due to their finishing ahead of other teams at MMP.
Honda has a good combination of speed and handling to deal with Misano. Rea has been able to duel well with other riders. This has kept him in striking distance of P1 in many races. I do not see them on the top podium step. I do hope that Aprilia and Kawasaki will be forced to duel with the Honda. Dueling riders are slower than leaders and use up their tyres faster. IF BMW qualifies well and IF those duels are taking place behind Roundel riders this will only improve BMW's Monday results.
Suzuki 48.5 points
In all likely hood Suzuki will have 68.5 points to its credit in the Manufacturer Championship. This would be the result of being the last manufacturer across the finish line at the end of each race. I am hoping for more. Camier has shown flashes during races. Hopkins should be in better condition to duel than he was at MMP. Go Suzuki! In a perfect world Suzuki riders will be dueling and defeating Ducati riders as BMW riders cruise past them in the straights. In a more perfect world those duels will continue ahead of other teams as they reach the corners. This will slow down those challengers as they work past the duelers on their own or with the assistance of race official flags waving leaders past.
As always these thoughts and a buck will get you a cup of coffee and change at the Official Fly-Over-Land coffee shop on Monday morning. We started to pool money for the crullers with standings deciding who goes first. I am hoping to upgrade my grid position on Monday. We dream big dreams in Fly-Over-Land.

Pass the mustard and UP THE REVOLUTION!
SBK
Checa takes the provisional Pole after Q1.
Carlos Checa takes the provisional pole in a crash filled first qualifying session at Misano. Less than a second separates P1 Checa and P16 Hopkins the last rider currently qualifying for Saturday Superpole.
Ducati
Carlos Checa and his Ducati showed they were up to the task today and took the provisional pole in the first qualifying session. Overall Ducati riders fared much better than I expected with 3 riders in the top 10 slots. If they are able to hold these qualifying slots or better Ducati could be on top of the Monday charts once more.
BMW
Marco Melandri continued to show he is on form for the weekend holding down a front row position through the session. Leon Haslam's P8 may not be indicative of his capabiltiy in Superpole. Through the first half of the session his times were closely paired with Melandri's. The riders may have taken their bikes in slightly different directions experimenting for superpole and Sunday's races.
The Italian contingent had very mixed results. Ayrton Badovini was listed as high as P6 in the early portion but finished Q1 in P12. Teamamte Michel Fabrizio and Frederico Sandi, riding for Grillini Progea Superbike Team BMW both crashed out of the session. No news the condition of either at this point.
Aprilia
One is never certain if Max Biaggi is stuggling or doing the reverse of what I suspect of BMW. His times early in the session were mid field at best. Teammate Eugene Laverty was the lead Aprilia rider for much of the session. At roughly 16 minutes remaining in Q1 Biaggi emerge from the pits and rocketed from row 3 to row 1.
Kawasaki
Tom Sykes placed is Kawasaki in P10 for the session. That would put him in the middle of the third row on Sunday. From a BMW fan perspective a very nice place to keep him; however, like Haslam I don't think this time is indicative of what he will be able to do in Superpole.
Honda
Jonathan Rea blasted through in the last quarter of the session and set a session fast lap and take the provisional pole for about a quarter of a lap. At that time Checa came across the line behind him setting the final session best time. No suspicion of hidden agendas here. Rea and his Honda had a solid session that built over the term and yielded a P2 result. I don't know how he will fare in Superpole but continue to believe he will be a contender on Sunday.
Suzuki
Leon Camier is currently in P11 right next to Sykes's Kawasaki in the middle of row 3. Teammate John Hopkins P16 is within a second of Checa's Q1 time. How much more there is to wring out of the GSX-Rs remains to be seen. The up side is they look to be in solid form to be troublesome to anyone forced to duel with them. That as good news as long as the Roundel riders are ahead of that duel.

Misano ÔÇô Free Practice & Qualifying Practice 1.
Friday, 8th June 2012.
Weather conditions: Cloudy at noon, sunny in the afternoon.
Temperature: Air: 28 ÔÇô 30 ??C, Track: 36 ÔÇô 39 ??C
Number of riders participating: 24 from 14 teams

Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) 1:36.521 min
Today, teams and riders from the FIM Superbike World Championship experienced really hot conditions for the first time this season. At Misano (ITA), host of the seventh round of 2012, temperatures went up to 30 degrees Celsius. Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport proved to be competitive in these summery conditions. Factory rider Marco Melandri (ITA) was quickest in the free practice in the morning and qualified for the provisional first row in the afternoon, finishing the first qualifying practice in fourth. In that session, his team-mate Leon Haslam (GBR) was in the top three for a long time. At the end of the session he put his BMW S 1000 RR on the provisional second row being eighth. BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet SBK Team rider Ayrton Badovini (ITA) finished the first qualifying practice in 12th; his team-mate Michel Fabrizio (ITA) was 18th.

Marco Melandri:
Fastest lap Free Practice: 1:36.613 min (P1)/Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: 1:36.795 min (P4)
ÔÇ£I am very happy about today. It was the first time riding in very hot conditions. We had one day of testing in Phillip Island when it was similar, but we have been at a different level since then. This afternoon we struggled a little bit with the feeling at the front. We tried to fix it and I think that in the end we made good progress. The bike was working much better. It is not going to be easy, but so far we can be happy. For sure, Carlos Checa and Max Biaggi will be very strong, but I will try to make their life not too easy.ÔÇØ
Leon Haslam:
Fastest lap Free Practice: 1:37.713 min (P10)/Fastest lap Qualifying Practice 1: 1:37.009 min (P8)
ÔÇ£It was a good day. We collected a lot of data as we have a lot of tyre choices this weekend. We are doing more research on what tyre we are using and working on finding a set-up for each tyre we have. So far we have not tried them all yet, but three different options from five. With the options we will try tomorrow we can be faster, but we need to look for a tyre that lasts the whole race. Overall I am positive. We are not too far away, the times are pretty close and I didnÔÇÖt throw tyres at it to get a lap time so I am really happy.ÔÇØ
Andrea Dosoli (Head of Race Operations):
ÔÇ£Overall, this first day was positive for us. Both riders spent the two sessions working on the settings and evaluating different tyres. Marco was fastest this morning; in the afternoon with the hotter conditions it was a little bit more difficult for him and he was struggling entering corners. His crew collected good information and tomorrow for sure he will improve, although the gap to the front is not so big. We are confident that we can be faster and consistent. Leon and his crew have been working hard on several areas, including tyre selection, electronics and chassis. They will continue evaluating the tyres tomorrow. Also with Leon, it is clear in which direction we have to head in order to improve the lap time and we are sure that he will be faster tomorrow.ÔÇØ

BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA GOLDBET SBK TEAM - MISANO - FRIDAY
The Misano World Circuit saw the World Superbike riders on track today for the first of three days of the seventh round of the 2012 season, the fourth event for the FIM Superstock 1000. The BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet Superbike Team riders Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini finished the morning's Free Practice with a fourteenth and a sixth place respectively, while in Qualifying 1 they ended the session eighteenth and twelfth. Sylvain Barrier and Lorenzo Baroni took seventh and a ninth places in the Superstock 1000 first qualifying session.
The two riders went on track for the first time today to take on Free Practice 1 at 11:45am. The session took place on a dry track with high temperatures. Michel Fabrizio - despite a crash at "Curva del Tramonto" from which he escaped unhurt - rode a total of 14 laps and set a time of 1'37.936 that gave him the fourteenth position. Badovini, with 18 laps under his belt and a lap time of 1'37.448 in the final seconds, finished in sixth place.
Qualifying 1 saw Fabrizio crashing out again at turn 10 which brought a premature end to his session with five minutes to go. Due to this the "Gladiator" could not better his 1'37.614 and he finished eighteenth. Ayrton Badovini took twelfth position thanks to a 1'37.295 personal best, set on the 7th of 15 laps ridden. "Speedy" worked intensively on his race pace, from which he got good feedback and some ideas for further modifications for the set-up of his BMW S 1000 RR #86.
In the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup Sylvain Barrier - despite being far from perfect physical condition - gave his best on track and, with a time of 1'40.356, finished seventh in Qualifying 1. Lorenzo Baroni, after finishing second in the morning's free practice, ended the qualifying session in ninth with a lap time of 1'40.377.
Serafino Foti, BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet Superbike Team Sporting Director, said:
"Today hasn't been an easy one, especially regarding Michel’s results, as he finished Free Practice 1 with an 18th position and he wasn't comfortable with the front end of the bike. He was not able to push as he wanted to and when he tried, he ended up crashing. We're already working on finding a solution and then turning things around tomorrow. We will evaluate all the data available and we'll make the set-up changes needed. Ayrton has done fairly well. He's spent most of the time on track focusing on his race pace. There's still something we have to try on his bike to allow him to better his lap times and to recover some positions."
Michel Fabrizio #84 - FP1 14th (1'37.936) - QP1 18th (1'37.614 ):
"Today we struggled and the eighteenth place in Qualifying 1 shows that. The front end didn't give me a good response and that didn't allow me to be competitive. We must work on such a crucial aspect for a track like Misano and finding the right direction starting from tomorrow morning."
Ayrton Badovini #86 - FP1 6th ( 1'37.448 ) - QP1 12th (1'37.295 ):
"The gap to the front runners is not huge although I'm a long way from the top if we look at the classification. We arrived at this round with a whole new bike weight distribution configuration and because of that we still need a little bit of time to work on it, but from the laps so far I already feel more at ease riding the bike. Now we need just some small changes, so I feel confident for tomorrow."

motomatters.com: 2012 Misano ÔÇô a Friday of few surprises
Checa's did not but the overall Ducati's performance was the only surprise to me.
Saturday, 9 June | Misano Q2
Sykes tops the Q2 field. Sandi is crashed during the session and will be the only BMW rider not to advance to the Superpole round of qualifying. I am never quiet certain what to make of this session. Haslam appears to have found the speed he was hoping to gain while Melandri seemed to be working on other things. Neither team Goldbet BMW riders displayed more than would be needed to advance.

Sales result for BMW Motorrad as of May 2012 slightly above previous year, for May 2012 declining. Deliveries of Husqvarna Motorcycles both as of and for May 2012 higher than previous year.
08.06.2012
Munich. The sales result of BMW Motorrad as of May 2012 is slightly higher than that of the equivalent period of the previous year. A total of 48,918 motorcycles (prev. yr. 48,749 units) were sold in the first five months of the year, a rise of 0.3%. Sales for the month of May 2012 fell by 8.8 % to a level below that of the previous month. A total of 11,457 motorcycles (prev. yr. 12,568 units) were delivered to customers worldwide.
According to Heiner Faust, head of sales and marketing BMW Motorrad, "the sales result for May is influenced very strongly by the economic situation in the major motorcycle markets of southern Europe. Although we are the market leaders in Italy and Spain, for example, we were not able to fully offset the consumers buying resistance on these markets against the very positive market developments in Germany, Switzerland, France, Brazil and the USA. For the month of June we again expect a weak sales result compared to the record year of 2011. However, we are planning to use our upcoming entry into the Maxi-Scooter market to raise the sales volume for the second half of the year above the previous year's level. It remains our goal to exceed our sales record from 2011."
Husqvarna Motorcycles, the second motorcycle brand in the BMW Group, has recorded a rise in deliveries for five months in a row. As of May, Husqvarna had delivered 4,420 motorcycles (prev. yr. 3,080 units), a rise of 43.5 %. In May, 860 vehicles (prev. yr. 537 units) were delivered to the Husqvarna dealership network, 60.1 % more than in the same month of the previous year.

SBK
Saturday started with Q1. Worldsbk.com reported the combined results this way:
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) put his name at the top of the timesheets in combined qualifying with a lap time of 1 minute 35.935 seconds in the final qualifying session at Misano.
He edged out Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati), with Checa's team-mate Davide Giugliano third and Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) fourth. British riders played a major part at the top of the time sheets, with Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) fifth. Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert) went sixth with a surprise entry in seventh, the wildcard Barni racing Team Italia Ducati of Matteo Baiocco. Leon Camier (FIXI Crescent Suzuki) was eighth and top GSX-R rider.
Suspicion that times in the second qualifying session were a bit tepid seemed confirmed with the second free practice that followed. Checa resumed control of P1. Rea showed he was a serious contender with his Honda while Melandri and Haslam flew the BMW colors.

The Grid Chart would reorganize to refelct the combined results of Q1 and Q2 when it appeared on screen for Superpole 1. If the appearance of Badovini in P5 is a pleasant surprise prepare yourself for a stunning shock as you look down the grid. You must scan to P13 to find Marco Melandri and P16 for Carlos Checa. Neither advance to SP2! This means many interesting midfield duels as they are forced to recover on the race day track.
If combined qualifying results were surprising they did nothing to prepare fans for how the Superpole would play out.

If the results for SP1 were surprising the format of SP2 went one better. I use the live timing feed. There are no explanations, written or symbolic, of what is going on. Expecting the 12 rider format of SP I was totally confused when the grid came up in the 8 rider P3 format. I have no explanations at this time. This freezes riders that had turned in the minimal times to advance to a normal SP2 but not put them in the elite 8 range in their SP1 slots for Sunday. I had failed to check the weather prior to Superpole and with the dearth information I was left confused. It was not until just before posting this the SBK site gave the following up date.
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) was a clear winner in Tissot-Superpole at the eni FIM Superbike World Championship round at Misano, his fifth success in 2012 thus far. His best lap time of 1 minute 35.375 seconds was the best of the weekend to date, with Sykes over 0.6 seconds faster than the next best rider, Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team). Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia Gold Bet) was a great third at his home round, while another local hero, Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing Ducati) was fourth.
Top names like Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing), Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) and Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) did not get out of Superpole 1 and thus Biaggi starts Sunday's races from the third row, with Melandri and Checa on the fourth.
The session showed the importance of the Italian contingent pushing themselves. Badovini's P5 in SP1 turned into a P3 in SP2. Haslam was not able to get off the second row but that is not a bad place for him to start from.

The provisional grid sets all sorts of challenges and battles for Sunday's racers to contend with. In addition it will no doubt yield many stories for writers as riders and teams comment on how Superpole is being handled by InFront. That with the return to Italy Sykes returns to the top of the charts because the rain shortened sessions will have team mangers in apoplexy. Look out when they regain speech.
