Welcome to the press conference of BMW Motorrad.

Today, it is a very special day for us, the motorcycle and scooter show is back after 4 years and we are very pleased to be here with you.

Then how is BMW Motorrad?
As you already know the times are very difficult for the motorcycle industry currently. However, the development of BMW Motorrad is the inverse of the major trends of the markets.

Level world BMW Motorrad has known in 2010, a growth of more than 12%.
And the story continues for 2011 as our current progress is more than 6%.
The brand is leader in volume in 12 countries, with a market share of 25% in Germany.

In the segment greater than 500cc world market share will reach approximately 13% this year.

Over the past 4 years, we have been able to almost double our market share of nearly 7%.

2011 will be a record year for BMW Motorrad with more than 103000 sold machines and exceptional results in turnover case, and profits.

What is the situation in France?

In France we also have an impressive growth In market share, rising from 8.7% end 2009 to 10.4% end 2010 reach almost 12% late October 2011 In volume, with 9190 registrations is a growth of 14% in 2010 and this in a market with only a 3% growth.

Of course, we are very satisfied with these results, but we are convinced of power still find margins of progress.

We will continue to work intensively with our network, to redouble its efforts in marketing and communications, using our brand and our products to be closer to 18% market share of the countries that surround us.

For its image and its communication, the brand adopted a radically different approach from those of the past.

With our events such as our road show, our days track, our GS Trophy (oriented client) as well as the future GS DAYS held the 1st weekend of may a Orange, and our presence on the main events major motorcycles, we are going there where many prospects and motorcycle not await us not.

The S 1000 RR has strongly contributed to the evolution of the brand image we know. 4 Years ago, nobody would have never believed that a BMW could become the best selling of motorcycle sport in France, and surpass all other models of competition. With 625 registrations end of October the S 1000 RR grows 8% in a market in decline of 10%.

After two years, and the comments of our customers and our own experience, we have developed the new RR. The new S 1000 RR offers even more steering precision, agility with a better control of the incredible power of this machine.
With these amendments we are faced once more with our current competitors and we await exciting upcoming trials.

Another highlight is the new BMW G 650 GS Sert?úo that revives the spirit of the very successful F 650 GS Dakar.

Ladies and gentlemen, we present you a new version of the "big" GS: as you know, the R 1200 GS is the very successful pioneer of a type of motorcycle to the increasing popularity.

Inventors of this versatile ultra motorcycle concept, perhaps one of the reasons for which we still have a very high demand for the two versions of GS boxer.
The GS today benefit from a further legacy of 30 years of experience and development. None of our competitors can claim such a legacy!

After the very successful launch of models Triple Black (F 800 GS, R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure) we now present the R 1200 GS rally

BMW Motorrad Motorsport happy with test in Portim?úo.

Portim?úo, 30th November 2011. Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport has completed its test programme of 2011 with three successful days in Portim?úo (POR). The teams participating in the FIM Superbike World Championship are now not allowed to test between 1st December and 15th January 2012. Over the next few weeks the squad will continue to prepare for the coming season at its bases in Munich and Stephanskirchen (GER). The testing ban meant it was once again vital for the team to gather extensive data at the final test of the year in Portugal (28th to 30th November). This data will now form the basis for the work to be carried out over the coming weeks.

The team arrived in Portim?úo to find conditions very similar to those they experienced last week in Jerez de la Frontera (ESP), the weather was mainly sunny and the mild temperatures were over 20 degrees Celsius – ideal working conditions. Leon Haslam (GBR) and Marco Melandri (ITA) were joined this time by BMW Motorrad test and development rider Steve Martin (AUS). Marco posted the unofficial best time (1:42.4 minutes) at this test, which was held along with other teams.
The team had an extensive programme to get through in Portim?úo. It worked on set-up solutions for the new engine spec of the 2012 version of the BMW S 1000 RR. These will now be refined on the dynamic testing rig in Munich. Modifications and optimal changes were made to the gearbox. In terms of the chassis, the team tested various components, including new swingarms and base set-ups. The modified BMW electronics were further optimised, and the team managed to further improve the handling of the RR. New brake components were also tested successfully. The team also worked on the aerodynamics, weight distribution and ergonomics.

“I am very happy. It was very good to come back to Portim?úo and set constantly quick lap times on this track, on which we were not so competitive last season,” said BMW Motorrad factory rider Leon Haslam. “This shows that we have taken a really good step forward, particularly in regard to the engine characteristic and the electronics. We also found very good settings with the new chassis. The team will now use the coming two months to prepare everything for Australia. If we continue in this direction, everything is looking good for Phillip Island. I will now return to England and have an intensive fitness programme with my trainer lined up for December and January. And I am really excited about the birth of our first child very soon.”

“We had ideal weather and test conditions at both the tests in Jerez and Portim?úo. As such, we were able to get through a comprehensive workload with our riders,” said BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director Bernhard Gobmeier. “We tested most of the topics we had on our list. We were able to further optimise all areas of the 2012 version of the RR and will now focus on fine-tuning over the coming weeks in Munich and Stephanskirchen. In general, I can say that we look forward optimistically to go to Phillip Island in February. I am also pretty happy with our newly assembled race team. The cooperation is working excellently, both from a technical and human point of view. It is a very harmonious and
creative working environment. The entire team has gelled together brilliantly within a very short space of time.”

Before the official start of the FIM Superbike World Championship season on 26th February 2012 in Phillip Island (AUS) Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport will conduct two more tests at this venue: from 13th to 15th February and at the official Infront Test on 20th and 21st February.


BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA SUPERBIKE TEAM - Portimao – Test

The BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team began work towards the 2012 season with its first private test at the Portimao circuit. On the track, the two Italian team riders have tried the bike with a hybrid configuration, including some 2012 parts. Ayrton Badovini was immediately fast, while Michel Fabrizio become more familiar with the new bike, concentrating on set-up.

The favorable weather conditions for the three day test at the Portuguese circuit allowed the BMW Motorrad Italy Superbike team to carry out a significant amount of work. Monday was devoted to testing new components, especially in terms of reliability, and while not making changes to the bike it was important to verify that everything worked. On day two the team worked on various set-ups and balance. Extremes were also tested to gain an understanding of response from the bike to the changes. Finally, on the third day, efforts were focused on new electronics management software which was ready just in time for these test.

Ayrton Badoviniimmediately felt good on the bike and from the early stages his times were among the best.

"It was love at first sight! With the new bike, I immediately felt at ease. It's easy to ride and I like it a lot” said Ayrton. “In these initial tests we have worked hard on the balance and we tried some new chassis set-ups and electronics options. The result was good because we have always been in touch with the front runners and this bodes well for next season in which we want to reap the fruits of the work done so far. The team worked very well, both back at the factory and here, and the results can be seen. "

On his second outing with BMW, and the first time on the new bike, Michel Fabrizio, having previously tested on the Tuesday following the race at Portimao, was back on track at the same circuit but with the bike with the new configuration.

"A very positive test” Michel commented on the three days in Portugal. “We tried everything we could on the bike, without focussing too much on lap times. In particular we focused on suspension set-up, forks and swingarm, and the bike always responded as expected. Overall I like the bike. I have not tried for out and out fastest times because I chose to focus on learning the bike at this test."

The best lap times at the end of the three days were 1'42.5 for Ayrton Badovini and 1'43.3 for Michel Fabrizio.

After the conclusion of the testing, Serafino Foti, sports director of BMW Motorrad Italy Superbike Team, commented: "This test was used to verify that all the work done in recent months was positive. We have focused on new components we have developed based on this year’s data, working on critical areas that we had identified. Overall, it appears that everything is positive. It’s clear that three days of testing are not enough to define the configuration of the 2012 bike, but I'd say we're pretty satisfied because it seems to go better than the 2011 version already. Before the start of the season we still have five days of testing remaining and we will try to get the most out of them, weather permitting. The weather was mild and we were able to work steadily. Ayrton focused on the different types of chassis set up and mapping the electronics. For Michel it was slightly different, because we focused on him feeling comfortable and learning the bike in anticipation of him doing more at the next test. His previously injured right arm proved to be a problem again and we need to conduct medical tests to evaluate necessary treatment.”

Now the BMW Motorrad Superbike Team Italy, as per the regulations, ceases testing with its riders until mid-February on the Australian circuit of Phillip Island.

BMW Motorrad on record course: Already exceeded 2010 total sales.
In the year to the end of November, BMW Motorrad delivered 100,054 motorcycles (prev. yr. 94,283) worldwide ÔÇô an increase of 6.1% and already 2,007 more than the total sales for 2010. BMW Motorrad delivered 6,112 motorcycles last month (prev. yr. 5,883 / +3.9%). With the expected December sales, BMW Motorcycle will reach its target for this year. With sales of over 103,000 motorcycles, the white and blue motorcycle brand will deliver more vehicles than ever before in its nearly 90-year-old history.

FWIW: Sauber is Ferrari powered so it may be go along with Scudia Ferrari for that reason. Ferrari powered Torro Rosso was absent from the FOTA meeting. Are they next? What will Renault do is just as big a question. They supply Red Bull while having an ownership stake in Lotus.

The Renault BoD threatened to withdraw from F1 for economic reasons during the last round of FOTA wars. The current breakdown of FOTA no doubt means the beginning of a round of creative accounting to meet the rules while a F1 arms race begins. If Renault's BoD were to decide to pull the plug it would have major ramifications for the series.

That must be a recent build, notice the Buell front brake setup?

I found the picture on an Italian site I kind of follow. It appeared with no comment. I did find a couple links to trace it back a bit but hit a dead end and learned nothing.

The brake set up does look like a Buell but there were various people playing with the idea before Buell serial produced it, so the build could be a bit older than you think.

What has me wondering is the fork angle or rather the lack of it. This makes me wonder about the front suspension/steering hidden underneath all that plastic up front. I have a couple of ideas but my copies of Motorcycle Chassis Design may have a lead are in storage in another state right now.

I had a talk with me myself I and the other guy inside my helmet on the way to work today. The bike doesn't do much for me. As for myself I have had curiosity raised just enough that the other guy in the helmet is getting the harpoons out. He thinks we have another whale to hunt.

If anyone knows anything about this bike post a note or drop me a PM.

FWIW: F1, read Bernie Ecclestone/ FIA Max Mosley – now Todt, is not the evil empire causing the rebel racing teams to organize under one banner. HRT was the first realize and acknowledge this. The Balkanization of F1 has begun. Teams will be 'organizing' along engine supplier lines for the near term. This result is fraught with seeds of future conflict. Red Bull and McLaren are in odd positions.

Red Bull the current reigning and double Constructor Champion is powered by Renault. Renault retains an ownership chunk in rising Louts. Lotus has Raikkonen and Grosjean inked for the new season with Kubica potentially still an unsigned option. The rumble of racing engines could cause a major fracture on that fault line of racing politics.

McLaren, once the darling of Mercedes, now finds itself buying its racing engines from its up and coming rival. It has been rumored to be in talks with Honda. They likely remain with Mercedes through this F1 Formula iteration but the next?

If I were the King of Bavaria I would tell my famous engine manufacturer it is time to go racing again. Be creative, be strong and force full but be only a supplier of strong racing engines and leave the racing chassis and the nasty team ownership business to others. But then I am not King of Bavaria.
