BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team - WSBK - Testing - Motorland Arag?n
The BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK team conducted two more days of testing at Spanish ?Motorland Arag?n? this week. Factory riders Marco Melandri (ITA) and Chaz Davies (GBR) mainly worked on the chassis and engine of their BMW S 1000 RRs. They were able to evaluate several settings and updated parts despite the fact that, unfortunately, weather conditions were not ideal in the north of Spain.

TED: Jackson Katz: Violence against women?it's a men's issue - Jackson Katz (2012)

Domestic violence and sexual abuse are often called "women?s issues.? But in this bold, blunt talk, Jackson Katz points out that these are intrinsically men?s issues -- and shows how these violent behaviors are tied to definitions of manhood. A clarion call for us all -- women and men -- to call out unacceptable behavior and be leaders of change.

BMW locks out front row in Spielberg ? Spengler claims pole ahead of Wittmann, fourth for Farfus.
BMW Motorsport enjoyed a fantastic qualifying ahead of the third DTM race of the season in Spielberg. Bruno Spengler (CA) secured pole position in the BMW Bank M3 DTM. This will be the fourth time the Canadian has started from the very front of the grid for BMW, and the first time this season. The 2012 champion now has a total of 15 poles to his name. For BMW Motorsport, this was the 36th pole position in its DTM history. Marco Wittmann (DE) finished second in only his third DTM qualifying. He will start alongside Spengler on the front row in the Ice-Watch BMW M3 DTM, completing the first all-BMW front row of 2013. Augusto Farfus (BR) also made it through to Q4 in the Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM and ultimately qualified fourth. For the first time since the manufacturer returned to the series last year, BMW had three BMW M3 DTMs in the top-four shootout. All four BMW teams made it into the top ten ? another firs

    "Don't think people steal BMW's."

The title of this FWIW is a line that caught my eye in the forum thread, *Motorcycle security on a trip. The thread is the normal combination of sage advice, urban legend, personal opinion peppered with personal vignettes. My personal experience is that people do steal BMWs, or at least try.

After more than forty plus years on two wheels and two months before moving from a sleepy little town in Iowa back to Minnesnowta thieves made two attempts to steal my Roadster. I have lived and ridden in major cities across the US, London and elsewhere without a problem. After all that to have two attempts on my motorcycle in a town in which locking your home is optional for many I was very surprised. Prior to this I may not have noticed the quoted line, now, as I read it I was curious how common my experience is.

Off to the internet to search for motorcycle theft data I went. Quickly I found myself surprised and agreeing with the editors of webBikeWorld.com *who commented in their piece on the topic: ?Unfortunately, data on motorcycle theft is difficult to find.? Many of the articles I was able to find referenced a report by the National Insurance Crime Bureau 2011 report and the webBikeWorld effort to compile information and links to reports. I will provide links to a pdf site for the NICB report and a the webBikeWorld article at the end of this piece. Let?s look at some of what I found interesting in both before you do your own reading.

BMWs are stolen. The rate at which they are stolen depends very much on where you live. BMWs are totally absent from the NICB report numbers for the US failing to make the top 15 brands most stolen; therefore, definitely not making the top 5. Conversely in the UK the Roundel marque and Honda were dueling wheel to wheel for most stolen in a 2005 report. The difference may be where BMW fits into each market. In the U.S. BMW has had less than 2% market share for many years, while in the UK the R1XX0GS has held the most sold big bike model for many years.

In 2006 Progressive Insurance published a study of its claims. The Suzuki GSX-R took a top step podium double coming in as the bike most likely to be stolen and most likely to crash. Suzuki bookended the statistics with the Suzuki Savage taking the least likely to be stolen. BMW took the penultimate with the R1200C.

The NICB report has a number of interesting ranks. In fairness to Iowa it ranked 37th in motorcycle theft rates while Minnesnowta came in 35th with North Dakota closing the list at 52. According to the report data there were 46,667 thefts in the report period. In general sportbikes are the most likely to stolen and the most likely to be found and returned to their owners. Conversely Harley-Davidson?s may not be the most likely to be stolen but are the least likely to be found and returned to their owners.

Top 5 most stolen brands - *(Representing 75.7% of the thefts)
    1. Honda - 11,014
    2. Yamaha - 8,880
    3. Suzuki - 7,281
    4. Kawasaki - 5,009
    5. Harley-Davidson - 3,120
Unfortunately the study did not cite exactly which models within these lines were most theft-worthy.

    Top 5 States
    1. California - 5, 297
    2. Texas - 3,950
    3. Florida - 3,927
    4. North Carolina - 2,466
    5. Indiana - 2,114

    Calendar Honors
Monday is the worst day of the week. No, not just because it is the start of the work week for us but the start of the work week for thieves also. They must be a religious lot because Sunday is a day of rest for them. Alright not by much Monday - 6,962 v Sunday at 6,422. Taking the top honors for Months are July and August while December and February are the safest.

    Portimao WorldSBK 2013
Groundhog Day and The Gordian Knot

World Superbike team members no doubt identify with Bill Murray?s character in the film Groundhog Day. The 2013 WSBK season has fifteen ?Groundhog Days?. In this episode they went to bed Sunday evening May 26 having completed the British Round 5 at Donington Park and wake up this morning in Portimao Portugal at the Autodromo Internacional Algarve preparing to do a race weekend all over again.

Racing seasons, as they develop, take on characteristic themes. Word Superbike had successive seasons of follow the leader with Checa and Biaggi dominating the leader board and everyone trying to catch up. Formula 1 2012 was a game of hot potato with multiple race winners yielding multiple championship table leaders before the final victor would emerge. For me, World Superbike 2013 has taken on the look of the Alexander solving the riddle of the Gordian Knot.

When I was first introduced to the Gordian Knot, Alexander takes a detour in his campaign conquer Anatolia to town of Gordia a cart with an intricate knot resides. In this telling of the legend the person who can solve the riddle of untying the knot will rule all of Persia. Alexander, ever mindful of the gods and legends, goes to solve the riddle and gain the blessing of the promise, insuring his conquest and preventing someone else solving the riddle of the knot and taking it away from him. In that telling Alexander takes his sword and cuts the knot to expose the cut ropes and unraveled the knot. In other tellings Alexander cuts through the knot and the knot simply falls away or in others he does not use his sword at all rather pulls the pole pin thus exposing the rope ends and undoes the knot in the process.

The 2013 WSBK factory teams form a tight knot of competitors, a WSBK Gordian Knot, on race day. Each round a teams must find a way to solve the riddle of dealing with the competition to gain victory. Having done that, like Bill Murray, they go to bed only to wake up at a new round and venue but confronted with the same WSBK Gordian Knot riddle to solve once again.

With those two images in mind and mixing in a few more metaphors, let?s look at the Manufacturer Championship standings, how the teams have tried to solve the riddle of the knot leading into this round.

Aprilia 208 points: Be the Knot
Aprilia?s egalitarian team approach for 2013 has led to clusters of the Italian machines zooming around the track. Some races they have dominated the results taking all three podium positions while others it can be argued it works against their Manufacturer Championship goal. Donington was an example of this.

In race one the opposition was able to break up the cluster and stay ahead. It is a fair fight when the Aprilias engage one on one with the opposition. The timing sheet gap between Giuntoli, Melandri and race winner Sykes is much bigger on paper than it appeared during the race. In race two three Aprilias were clustered behind Sykes. As they fought among themselves Sykes was able to motor away from the field. What had been a slim and hard fought victory in race one for Sykes was a romp of over 8 seconds.

Aprilia entered the Donington weekend with Manufacturer Championship points to burn. The current race strategy worked to keep Melandri off the race two podium and dropping BMW down on slot on the chart in the process. However, dueling amongst themselves allows Sykes to run away. They do not have the points to allow that race weekend after race weekend. For their championship hopes they must find an alternative to spending race weekends dueling with themselves.

Kawasaki 180 points: Be the Gingerbread Man
Gordian Knot, Smordian Knot who cares if you are Sykes on a Z just run away from the field in Q1 / 2, Superpole and on race day if they let you. If the opposition gets caught up in battles amongst themselves Sykes has been able to take positions and victories at their expense. If the race is cast as fight for P1 he and his Z are vulnerable. Portimao presents a technical leaning track that lends to lends itself to infighting for position and allowing Kawasaki to cut deeper into Aprilia?s lead.

BMW 175 points: Be the Sword
BMW race weekend strategy combined with Melandri?s recovery has them focusing on setting up for Sunday races rather than hot lap Superpole setups. The result is a team that is very competitive on race day but starts it challenge from row 2 or 3 too often. Both Melandri and Davies have shown they can pick off the competition and take the top podium spot on Sunday, but they do not have a big enough sword to hack through a Gordian Knot of opposition. The team needs to compete more aggressively for front row slots in Superpole.

Honda 96 points | Suzuki 82 points: Be the Rope
These are not leading teams but are part of the knot of competition you must hack your way through if you have bad start or choose a bad line and fall out of sequence. Honda should be on a bit of a high with Haslam?s return. He is a very good race weekend rider bringing the best out of a team, however do not expect great things from him individually because of his state of physical conditioning. I continue to see FIXI Crescent Suzuki as a dangerous team to deal with. They are not at a breakthrough point yet. Their biggest problem at this point may be themselves and problems with keeping the black side down.

Ducati 65 points: Be the Cart
Checa?s health continues to be a big questionmark. Canepa gave a good performance in qualifying at Donington taking his DucAudi into Superpole 3 and P9 on the grid. However, Race 1 he slipped to P13 by the end and Race 2 was able to only improve on his starting spot by one to a P8 finish. Ducati glory is a fond memory of the past while DucAudi future glory remains a good way off in the future.

The FIM, Dorna & MSMA are pleased to announce that a new framework for the Superbike Technical Rules has been obtained after many discussions between the parties involved. The new Superbike rules will be applied progressively, starting in 2014, in 3 stages.

The aim was focused on the reduction of cost and to fix a maximum price for the motorcycle and its components, to be reduced in yearly in the next 3 years. The price of the motorcycle and its components will be much lower than today's cost. Furthermore, a maximum number of engines for use by a rider during the complete season will be introduced. Items considered for cost limitation are suspension components, brakes and gearbox ratios.

The constructors present in the FIM Superbike World Championship agreed to have a minimum number of motorcycles with the same state of tuning, available for sale or through lease.

A draft of the new technical rules will be published soon.

    SBK

    2:32 PM (5 hours ago)
BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team - WSBK - Portimao - Superpole
The BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team had a day of mixed fortunes at Portim?o (POR). Factory rider Marco Melandri (ITA) will start the sixth round of the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship from the second row. In today?s Superpole, which was interrupted by a rain shower, Marco finished fourth on his BMW S 1000 RR. His team-mate Chaz Davies (GBR) had a tough day. He crashed in the final stages of the free practice session, two hours before the start of the Superpole. Chaz will start from 12th place on the fourth row. In the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup, Sylvain Barrier from the BMW Motorrad GoldBet STK Team will start tomorrow?s race from pole-position despite the fact that the Frenchman had a massive crash at the beginning of today?s second and final qualifying practice. His team-mate Greg Gildenhuys (RSA) qualified 15th.

Always makes a great picture but is it part of the reason BMW is on Row 2 not Row 1?

I really like the K75. I did a lap around Lake Superior on a K75 and loved it. If there had been a K75R when I was back in the new bike market I might not own my Roadster.

I am more than a little dubious about the CPI comparison. My doubt does not come from the calculation itself, rather changes in how BMW is weighting its pricing around the world. In the mid 80's and maybe fifteen to twenty years after the US appeared to have a pricing advantage in all of the models. With BMW's increased presence in South America there seems to be a change in how it, and the other manufacturers, weights the pricing of its models nation to nation.

For tastes of many of us a K75 would be a nice addition back to the line up. For my money, if I had any, I would really have to consider a new K75R if I was in the new bike market again and they built one. The trouble is they stopped building them because the market didn't have enough people with the money in hand and buying them to justify building them.

    Silly markets.

Mika, is it silly markets, or how BMW advertised its bikes back then? I point to my R1200S as evidence, it sold state-side less than one year. Yet, it sold in AU, South Africa, and Europe through 2009.

I will give you credit for questioning the use of the US CPI as the sole factor. IMHO, the euro-dollar exchange rate should be a factor, but the BMW car line "seems" to have maintained US price points since the early 90's. I wonder what the real profit margins have been over the past several decades on the US market.

The car line has some advantages that allow the price point. Economies of scale are in its advantage. In addition the Finance Sector of BMW has done some impressive (from an investor point of view) in the US.

On the bike side BMW has held the line to a great degree with prices when compared to other big bikes. H-D, Indian, Victory and even the Wing are more expensive than we realize around here by comparison. Not saying BMW's are cheap but not as high priced as the market competition might allow them to be. The sport market with the S 1000 RR is getting a steal.

In the early 2000s, in the post BMW British Invasion erra, BMW went through each of its product lines to decided if they were keepers or not. The Motorrad division was the first to go under scrutiny. Obviously it passed in a revised form and set a standard for the remaining evaluations. The profit margin in the US market no doubt played a big role.
