Silverstone ÔÇô Qualifying Practice 2 & Superpole.
    Saturday, 30 July 2011.
Weather conditions: Overcast in the morning, later scattered clouds.
    Temperature: Air: 16 ÔÇô 20 ??C, Track: 22 ÔÇô 34 ??C
Number of riders participating: 22 from 12 teams
Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: John Hopkins (Samsung Crescent Racing) 2:05.058 min
Fastest lap Superpole 3: John Hopkins (Samsung Crescent Racing) 2:04.041 min
BMW Motorrad Motorsport riders, Leon Haslam (GBR and Troy Corser (AUS), will start
tomorrowÔÇÖs World Superbike races in Silverstone (GBR) from the third and fifth rows
respectively. While Troy was not able to qualify for Superpole Qualifying, and so will go into
SundayÔÇÖs races from position 17, Leon missed the third and final Superpole session by only
21 thousandths of a second. He will start from ninth.
Ayrton Badovini (ITA) from the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team will start on his BMW S 1000
RR from tenth. His team mate, James Toseland (GBR), qualified 14th.
    Leon Haslam:
Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: 2:05.640 min (P8) / Fastest lap FP: 2:06.053 min (P5) /
    Fastest lap Superpole 2: 2:05.091 min (P9)
ÔÇ£I was able to post good lap times on race tyres, but sadly when we changed to the qualifying
tyre the extra grip caused a few issues. We should be in good shape come the races
tomorrow, as we are happy with the times we are able to set on race tyres. ItÔÇÖs a shame
because if I had remained on these tyres, I think I could have made it through to Superpole 3.
But we will line up in ninth tomorrow, which isnÔÇÖt bad considering my recent starting positions.
I am feeling pretty confident, so letÔÇÖs see what happens. The BMW is good off the line so letÔÇÖs
    hope for a good start.ÔÇØ
    Troy Corser:
Fastest lap Qualifying Practices: 2:06.304 min (P17) / Fastest lap FP: 2:06.473 min (P9)
ÔÇ£TodayÔÇÖs result is disappointing. We have definitely fixed a few things we struggled with
yesterday. Still, chattering was our biggest issue today. We think the reasons were a
combination from engine brake and set up. We changed the engine brake and it helped a bit,
but the chattering came back with a grippy tyre. I was not too bad on my long runs, as the bike
was quite stable. We know what we have to do for tomorrowÔÇÖs warm up.ÔÇØ
Rainer B?ñumel (Head of Race Operations):
ÔÇ£Leon unfortunately struggled with the qualifying tyre. Although starting from the third row, I
am confident he will show a good performance tomorrow. His lap times on race tyres were
consistently good. On TroyÔÇÖs side we were not able to find a good chassis set-up, but we keep
working hard on this. I hope we will have a good solution for tomorrowÔÇÖs warm-up and races.ÔÇØ

Troy had a day to forget, missing out on getting into Superpole, and will now have a mountain to climb if he is to get any kind of good results out of tomorrowÔÇÖs two 18-lap races. All the things he and the team tried didnÔÇÖt work out as intended and there was a bit of confusion regarding a new new bike which didnÔÇÖt help matters. Wild Card John Hopkins (Suzuki) won Superpole today, with a lap of 2:04.041, just two tenths of a second ahead of Eugene Laverty (Yamaha). Third was Leon Camier (Aprilia), with series leader Carlos Checa (Ducati) filling the final front row grid spot in fourth. Troy - 17th, 2:06.304 ItÔÇÖs been a disappointing and a frustrating day and it hasnÔÇÖt worked out the way we thought. We got a bit caught out at the end of free practice this afternoon and that didnÔÇÖt help either. Also, I made a little mistake and that probably cost me the fraction of a second that wouldÔÇÖve got me into Superpole. We managed to get rid of the chatter on one bike, but not the other. We had a new bike and it didnÔÇÖt feel the same as my other bike and maybe we spent too much time trying to get it to work when we shouldÔÇÖve just parked it. ThatÔÇÖs what Leon did to his new bike and thatÔÇÖs why he finished higher up than me. We have a problem when we use the bike on qualifiers and have not found a good solution yet. I have ridden many bikes and no other bike has behaved in this way so we are still working on finding out whatÔÇÖs going on and then making improvements. My arm is a bit sore today, but I think thereÔÇÖs probably a bit of friction at the end of the plate inside. ItÔÇÖs not too bad and it will not affect me in the race. I made the best practice starts of the season today, so hopefully I can do that in the races and fight for a top ten place. Wish me luck. Troy

BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA SUPERBIKE TEAM - SILVERSTONE ÔÇô SUPERPOLE
A fall in Superpole did not stop Ayrton Badovini from making a third row, tenth place start. Pleased to be back, James Toseland
qualified for Superpole and reached 14th. Zanetti and Barrier, respectively fourth and fifth in Superstock, will start from the first and
    second rows.
It has been an emotion filled day for the BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team which had both riders qualifying for Superpole.

Ayrton Badovini fell in the early stages of Superpole 1 but was able to pit and get back out immediately on a second bike, from
which he then qualified for Superpole 2. The second run proved to be very closely fought and Ayrton, in pain, reached the third row,
with the tenth fastest time, missing Superpole 3 by 45 thousands of a second.
"I am satisfiedÔÇØ Ayrton said after the Superpole ÔÇô ÔÇ£because regardless of the Superpole result, the fall meant that I was ÔÇÿforcedÔÇÖ to
ride the second bike and I liked it. We have thus identified a new set-up solution for the race. Of course, we see these choices as
dependent on temperature. In comparison with my competitors we are relaxed and we will be ready for tomorrow. "

James Toseland, on his return, reached Superpole and his time allows him to start from the fourth row. His physical condition is still
limiting his performance and the British rider has conserved some of his energy for tomorrow's races.
James said: "It has been nice to get back on track and although I didnÔÇÖt get beyond Superpole 1 IÔÇÖm still in perfect shape. During
qualifying I could have pushed harder but it takes it out on my wrist and that saps my energy. Overall, my time is not far from the top
but I have to work to bridge the gap. Over the next events we will continue to develop the bike and I'm excited to finally be able to
    contribute to the team".

The BMW Motorrad Italia Superstock Team has Lorenzo Zanetti on the front row (fourth fastest time), a position that will allow
the Brescia rider to get a good start and be with the leaders. Sylvain Barrier, however, starts from just behind on the second row in
    fifth place.

Serafino Foti, sporting director of BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team at the end of qualifying the day commented: "Today
we suffered because we struggled a little to find the right set-up for both riders. In the end we managed to find something in free
practice before Superpole, especially for Ayrton. His fall in Superpole 1 was unfortunate, because track time is limited. After the shock
of the fall, Ayrton reacted very well in getting back on the bike and making Superpole 2. We are quite confident for the race, although
as a precaution we have sent Ayrton to hospital for checks as he sustained a hard impact on his chest from the tank and we donÔÇÖt
want complications. James reached Superpole but still hasnÔÇÖt found the right bike balance. We will try to make further changes
tomorrow to solve the problem. I expected more from the Superstock final qualifying session, even though we pay much less on race
pace. It promises to be another hard fought race like the others in the championship. "

Yes it was. I felt bad for Hamilton. I was pulling for him. The split tyre strategy was an interesting call by McLaren.

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport leaves the Silverstone race weekend with mixed emotions. At the last race weekend before the summer break, factory rider Leon Haslam (GBR) secured the squad another top five finish in the 2011 season of the FIM Superbike World Championship. On the other hand, Troy Corser (AUS) had to retire from the second race due to a technical issue. In the championship standings, Leon is fifth (158 points) and Troy is still 15th (62 points). In the manufacturer standings, BMW lies fourth with 194 points.

Two BMW riders were again successful in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup race: BMW Motorrad Italia Superstock Team rider Lorenzo Zanetti (ITA) celebrated a podium, finishing second. 17 years old German Markus Reiterberger (GER) from the Garnier Alpha Racing Team secured another top ten result finishing sixth.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport congratulates Erwan Nigon (FRA), S?®bastien Gimbert (FRA) and Damian Cudlin (GBR) from Team BMW Motorrad France on the fourth place on its debut at the prestigious Suzuka 8-Hour race. The result catapulted Team BMW Motorrad France 99 to the top of the Endurance World Championship standings, with just two rounds of the series remaining.

“In race one I was really happy with the start. I was able to get myself into the position I wanted to be in and ran with the leaders. I was really pushing for the podium and battled to keep with Marco Melandri, but I was really struggling to pass him and stay in front. I was happy to be running close to the front and the lap times were OK. I just narrowly missed out on a podium. In race two I was having a few issues with the bike and I was forced to adapt my riding style to try and ride around it. I got to the point where I was able to run consistent lap times, but by then the leaders had gone. Now we have the summer break, so I am just looking forward to spending some time at home and preparing in the gym for the next races.”

    Troy Corser:
    Result Race 1: 9th / Gap to 1st: 00:25.491 min / Fastest Lap Race 1: 2:06.979 min
Result Race 2: DNF / Fastest Lap Race 2: 2:07.099 min
“In race one I got a great start. I actually had a little incident at the first corner – I collided with another rider which did cost me a bit of time and to be honest I was lucky not to go down. I fought hard and managed to get to the front of the group and I felt well on the bike. The grip level dropped off as the race progressed, and it caused me to slide and spin the rear tyre. I just managed the situation the best I could and brought it home. In race two we had an issue with the bike which we are currently looking into. That sadly brought an early end to the race for me. We are not sure exactly why the issue occurred at the minute but it does seem bizarre at this stage because we only made minor changes between races. The changes we did make seemed to improve the package but sadly we couldn’t take advantage of that. I have a couple of days off before going back to serious training. I still do not feel 100 per cent fit on the bike after my injury.”

Bernhard Gobmeier (BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director):
“We leave Silverstone with mixed emotions. In the first race, Leon’s lap times were good enough for a podium finish. After the second race, he complained about chattering. This didn’t allow good lap times. Troy showed a really good performance in race 1 and demonstrated that he is back from his injury. In the second race he brought the bike back to the garage and retired early from the race as he had technical issues. We now will analyze the data and find out what the problem was. The entire squad in Stephanskirchen, Munich and at the race track has worked hard over the last couple of months. Everybody should now recover before we come back to our home race at N??rburgring.”

TroyCorser.com: Disappointment and frustration for Troy

Troy will not look back on raceday at the ninth round of this year’s Superbike World Championship with any great affection.A tough ninth place, from seventeenth on the grid, in race one was followed by a retirement in race two - his sixth non-finish of the year. Today was always going to be a tough day - thanks to Troy’s lowly grid position - and although the result in race one was respectable enough - all things considered - race two’s non-finish (due to problems with the electronics) was a bitter disappointment. Spaniard Carlos Checa (Ducati) ran away with both races - his fourth double of the season - and took his his tally of victories to ten this year. In both today’s 18-lap races, Eugene Laverty (Yamaha) took second, with team mate Marco Melandri third. Troy - Race 1: 9th, Race 2: DNF Today was not a particularly good day for me.I knew it was going to be tough, because of my grid position, but I knew that my pace on race rubber was pretty good and I could get respectable results as long as I made good starts. I made a pretty good start in the first race, but got a bit tangled up with Max (Biaggi) in turn one and lost ground and was then 12th at the end of lap one, instead of being further up the field and closer to the main pack. I had a couple of good battles and ended ninth, which I was pretty happy with. As I was happy enough with the bike we didn’t change too much for race two, except for shortening the wheelbase a tad. Almost straight from the start, the electronics started going haywire. Sometimes they would cut out and sometimes they’d suddenly cut in. The worst thing was the unpredictability. I nearly crashed a few times, so I decided it would be safer for myself - and everybody near me on the track - to pull out. The guys could see that something was amiss on the telemetry afterwards, but they’ll have to work out what caused the problem. It could be something very simple, like a faulty sensor, but we’ll have to wait and see. I’ve now got a good break before the next race and I’ll use the time building up strength in my arm and getting 100% for Nurburgring. I had a bit of pain in my arm on heavy braking today, but that wasn’t a problem - the bike was in race two. See ya, Troy

BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA SUPERBIKE TEAM - SILVERSTONE – RACE
    31.07.2011

Silverstone was an uphill struggle for the *BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team *this weekend.* Ayrton Badovini,*after two falls during practice and qualifying, collected twelve points which consolidates his eighth place in the standings.* James Toseland , still not 100%, finished both races and manage seven points. Overall the* BMW Motorrad Italia STK Team *had a positive weekend.* Lorenzo Zanetti* scored a second place finish to open up the championship, while* Sylvain Barrier*fell while in fourth place.

Technical decisions that had shown not positive results slowed* Ayrton Badovini’s progress in Race 1, where at first he battled with rival Aitchison for eighth place and then found himself battling for ninth with Corser and Biaggi. In Race 2 he fought with Aitchison and Lascorz and eventually won the tenth place that means he keeps his eight place in the World Championship table.

"This was a defensive race: sometimes this happens during a championship.” Ayrton said after the debrief with his engineers. “I was not 100% after two crashes, both in terms of psychological and physical condition. I had some pain in my wrist, among other things, which I think is dislocated. We are happy with the bike, for which we collected data and information that will help us to further development. Now we go on the summer break, we will reinvigorate and come back even more competitive in September for the final stage of the season. I want to thank the whole team this weekend which was able to give me two good bikes despite the two falls. "

In Race 1* James Toseland*was hindered by set-up choices and the Englishman couldn’t make it into the points, finishing twelfth behind Max Biaggi. In Race 2, James lapped steadily from the half-way stage, gaining more confidence in the bike.

"On Friday morning I had concerns for the weekend due to both physical and psychological stresses.” James said at the end of races “I’m therefore very happy to have been able to complete both races. I had no grip in Race 1 but the bike was fine in the second. Beyond the result, for me it was important to finish both races after five months off track. It has boosted my morale because the fracture was really bad and now I'm coming through it. "

In the* Superstock*race,* Zanetti*started to attack, duelling with Petrucci and Giugliano. In the second part of the race he held second place until the last lap when he was overtaken by Canepa. Lorenzo retaliated, overtaking the Italian rider and regaining second place. The result means that Zanetti has consolidated his second place in the FIM Cup closing the gap to the championship leader, who is now eleven points ahead. Silverstone reopened the championship and the Brescia rider will be attacking in the remaining races of the season.
"I felt good” said Lorenzo on the podium “Early in the race I tried to find the rhythm. Unfortunately with the tyre degradation I started to lose grip and I had to fight to maintain the position. The championship is now wide open with just a few points behind the leader. The team worked very well and I am convinced that we are going the right way to fight for the championship to the last race. "

Serafino Foti, Sports Director of BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team at the end of race day, said: "It was quite a weekend with Ayrton suffering the most with two falls, and James still not being in perfect form. It was difficult to do more with a set-up that wasn’t perfect and both drivers injured. I think we got the best results possible under the circumstances, and I’m happy as usual that everyone did the best they could and gave their full commitment to the team. Now we will analyze the data to understand what went wrong, what worked well and what to do. What is important is that James is back, and finished the two races. In Superstock Barrier fall, but apart from that we had some luck with the leader Giugliano falling, which closed the gap by 20 points. That's racing. The Superstock Championship this year is at the highest level and in almost every race times are improved over last year. Now our bike need technical advances to help us be more competitive at the next race. "

yamaha-racing.com: Yamaha official World Superbike Team withdraws at the end of 2011 season from World Championship

Yamaha-Racing Europe has faced an up hill battle. If you remember Yamaha had difficulty securing sponsors for the MotoGP and SBK factory teams as the season began. The SBK team found sponsorship first. The heavy European focus of the World SBK schedule probably helped with that but worked against continuing once the world wide impact of racing was calculated.

Combine the Euro-centric schedule with the MotoGP rule change for 2012 and I am not surprised at the decision. The advent of the litre bikes in MotoGP has caused the factories to question the true value of competing in both MotoGP and WSBK. The math may not work for them.

Yamaha discontinued its Super Sport factory team several years ago. It continues to support riders in the category with strong results for the marque. Expect strong technical support (like Ducati) of the independent teams campaigning R1s in WSBK.

The current team riders should have no problem finding work. Melandri has been linked with BMW as the one possible teams with a ride for him. gpone.com: Melandri will stay in Superbikes. If his stay is in Superbikes and BMW which team would he be joining? The answer could say more about BMW Motorrad plans for 2013. (Isn't the 'Silly Season' fun!)

Schum loves being in the spotlight even by being wrong.

Mercedes Petronas GP is not Ferrari. If they were we would have a different story to talk about. Right now Rosberg and Schum combined have 2 more championship points than Massa.

It took Ross Brawn 18 months without the distraction of actually having to race and a loop hool in the rules to build the Championship Brawn GP. Then he built a wide bodied jet last year and this year came up a M10 warthog. Tactically it is an improvement but it still isn't in the fighter class. Mecedes funded all of this with car promotions in mind not winning championships.

Norbert Haug is a brillian field marshall but he is not the general and tactician needed to win the title.

Shum is guilty of head jams and stupid mistakes this season and last. He should own some of them and some happened because his team has set him up for failure in to many ways.
