Salminen third in Enduro 2 World Championship standings

BMW Husqvarna MotorsportÔÇÖs number one rider Juha Salminen delivered another pair of solid results in the ÔÇÖ10 Enduro World Championship, finishing third and fourth in the highly competitive Enduro 2 class at the GP of Portugal. Following on from his strong start to the series in Spain, where he also claimed the same third and fourth place results, Juha finished just 22 seconds behind day one winner Mika Ahola but a fall on the opening special test on day two robbed him of another podium result.
Winning the Friday night Super Test Salminen made the best possible start to the GP of Portugal and began the first full day of competition holding a slender advantage over his E2 class rivals. Although unable to win any of the dayÔÇÖs special tests consistent, mistake free, riding enabled him to keep up the pressure on Ahola and Ivan Cervantes. After 46 minutes of special test racing Juha placed third, claiming his second podium in as many races.
The dominant rider on the Extreme test throughout the second dayÔÇÖs competition Juha made one costly error during the dayÔÇÖs opening special test. Falling in the slippery conditions, Salminen fought back throughout the day winning each of the three extreme tests. Giving the final lap his all, and setting his fastest time on the motocross tests, Juha came within less than a quarter of a second of repeating his day one third pace result, forced to accept fourth. Despite his frustration at having not claimed a podium result Juha currently sits in third position in the E2 championship standings with six GPs remaining.
Marko Tarkkala endured a tough event in Portugal as the burly Finn saw falls and a derailed chain on the extreme test effect his result. Placing 15th on day one Marko placed 12th on day two.
Juha and the BMW Husqvarna Motorsport team will neat be in action in the Enduro World Championship at the GP of Italy, which takes place on May 22/23.

Juha Salminen ÔÇô Enduro 2 class: ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs been what I would call a pretty normal world championship race for me. Finishing on the podium on day one was good, I wasnÔÇÖt too far away from the winning rider. It was a tough but enjoyable day and I was 22 seconds behind the winner. I was pleased with my riding on the first day. I didnÔÇÖt make any big mistakes and enjoyed the event. Racing in Portugal is always challenging and with the rain the course and some parts of the special tests were quite difficult. The second day was really slippery in the morning, and I wasnÔÇÖt able to get the times I wanted. I also made a small mistake and fell on one of the tests. It got drier towards the end of the day, but although I pushed my hardest on the third lap I just missed the podium. Finishing third and fourth at both the GP of Spain and the GP of Portugal isnÔÇÖt the best start to the championship because of course I want to be winning or finishing on the podium on both days. But itÔÇÖs not too bad, itÔÇÖs a start we can build on.ÔÇØ

German racing magazine Speed Week is running a story that Reitwagen Motorsport will not field a team at Assen this coming weekend and is probably done for the 2010 season. Reports after the Valencia round stated the team had spent approximately Ôé¼700,000 through that round and was in desperate straights to find a major sponsor. Even if one is secured at this time team members have been released to seek jobs with other teams. RaceSport a Dutch site reports the team has a very important meeting scheduled for Tuesday (4/19) that hopefully will clarify the future, if any, of the team.

This will be the second team to fall to sponsorship problems in 2010.

Company expands production capacity in China

Munich/Beijing. The BMW Group will also produce its X1 Sports Activity Vehicle in China in the future. ÔÇ£The BMW X1 could be one of the first products for our new plant in Tiexi in the Shenyang region. We are currently exploring this possibility together with the authorities here in China,ÔÇØ said Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG Norbert Reithofer in Beijing on Wednesday. The facility currently builds BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series models for the Chinese market.
Following the launch of the new 5 Series, a successor to the 5 Series Long Wheelbase version will also be produced and sold only in China. Production of the new vehicle will begin in autumn of this year. The Long Wheelbase version of the 5 Series has proved extremely successfully in China, with more than 70,000 vehicles sold since 2006.
In light of the promising opportunities for growth, the BMW Group will continue to expand its presence and its purchasing activities in China over the coming years. ÔÇ£We are confident that this market will continue to see strong growth over the next few years. Our goal is to participate in that growth over the long term,ÔÇØ Reithofer explained. ÔÇ£With our new plant in Tiexi, we will be increasing our production capacity in China to 100,000 vehicles a year from 2012 on. Over the long term, we anticipate the two plants having combined potential for as many as 300,000 vehicles a year ÔÇô depending on market trends. We may realistically need this potential over the long termÔÇØ.
The BMW Group announced that it would build a second production plant in China in November 2009. The investment volume for the new plant amounts to a total of 560 million euros; the BMW Group and its partner, Brilliance, will each defray half of this amount. Construction work is scheduled to begin in early June 2010, with the start of production slated for 2012. The expanded capacity in Shenyang will create a total of around 1,000 new jobs. 600 new employees have already been hired and are currently being prepared for their roles.
China is currently the BMW GroupÔÇÖs fourth largest market worldwide. Last year the BMW Group sold more than 90,000 vehicles in mainland China. In the first quarter of 2010, the company increased deliveries by 106% to reach a total of 34,179 vehicles. ÔÇ£China is, and will remain, one of the most attractive automobile markets in the world,ÔÇØ added Reithofer. In 2002 ÔÇô before the plant in Shenyang was built and opened in 2003 ÔÇô the BMW GroupÔÇÖs retail volume in mainland China was just under 6,700 vehicles.
According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), a total of around 478,000 premium automobiles were sold in China last year. The Association estimates that the market for premium vehicles in China will grow to more than 1.5 million units a year by 2020.
Resource-efficient production plays an important part in the BMW GroupÔÇÖs sustainability strategy and at the Shenyang location also. Through rigorous optimisation of its production processes, the existing plant in Da Dong reduced energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions alone by 12 percent and water consumption by as much as 40 percent between 2008 and 2009.

TOP BMW Group: Megacity Vehicle to launch in 2013

Munich / Beijing. With the launch of its Megacity Vehicle in 2013, the BMW Group will be bringing its first series-production electric-drive model to market. “With this innovative vehicle, designed from the ground up, we will be creating new benchmarks for electric mobility from 2013 on. Our Megacity Vehicle will be significantly lighter than conventional cars and, in terms of sustainability, will set a new standard across the entire value-added chain,” said Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, on Thursday ahead of the Auto China 2010 show in Beijing.

The Megacity Vehicle will be a zero-emission urban car for the world’s metropolitan regions. It is currently being developed as part of project i and will be available from 2013 under a sub-brand of BMW. When it comes to the choice of materials, the company is broaching entirely new territory. This is because weight plays a pivotal role in the range achievable by electrically driven vehicles. The ultra-light yet high-strength composite CFRP (carbon fibre-reinforced plastic), for example, plays a significant part in the materials mix.

“This vehicle will radically alter the motor industry as we know it. The BMW Group is currently the only company that will be launching a volume-production vehicle on the market that features carbon fibre-reinforced material,” explained Reithofer. “We were among the first manufacturers to pick up on the trend towards electric mobility and to act accordingly. More and more people around the globe are very keen on electric driving. Research shows, moreover, that more than half of the population around the world already live in conurbations,” Reithofer added.

The BMW Group has been gleaning insights into the day-to-day use of electric vehicles since mid-2009, when it launched a global field test involving more than 600 MINI E models. During the test phase some 50 MINI E cars are also being delivered to customers in China in 2010.
“I am convinced that our Chinese clients will show the same enthusiasm for the vehicle as MINI E drivers in Germany, the USA and Britain,” emphasised Reithofer. 2011 will see the handover to Chinese customers of a further fleet based on the BMW Concept ActiveE. The renowned China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) and the state-owned energy supply company State Grid are involved as partners in the preparation, implementation and assessment of the practical use of these vehicles. Corser was in the top 10 and in the top 5 for most of FridayÔÇÖs hour long qualifying session. He held P4 for a long time but struggled to break into the 1ÔÇÖ36 range. In the closing minutes he set best sector times for sector 1 and improved his other sector times and broke into the 1ÔÇÖ36s with a minute remaining then on his last hot lap after the checkered flag had fallen he took P3.

Programme:
After the best race result to date in its short history in Valencia (ESP), and a successful test in Mugello (ITA), Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport started the fourth race weekend of the 2010 FIM Superbike World Championship in Assen (NED) well. During Free Practice both riders, Troy Corser (AUS) and Ruben Xaus (ESP), got used to the new entry to ÔÇ£RuskenhoekÔÇØ and concentrated on set-up work. Troy finished Qualifying third, while Ruben ended up 18th.

ÔÇ£The team really did a good job. The traction control is working very effectively and the bike feels very connected. Both throttle and engine braking feel good to me. The engine is pushing strongly ÔÇô from first to fifth gear the acceleration is really good. Overall, the bike is now a good package. The modifications at ÔÇ£RuskenhoekÔÇØ make the section really fast. It might be somewhere else where you can actually pass. Unfortunately, another rider crashed in the last chicane when I was on my flying lap at the end of Qualifying. I saw yellow flags and oil flags and just took it easy through the corners. There was a lot better time possible. However, we are quite consistent on race tyres. I am quite confident for the weekend.ÔÇØ


Ruben Xaus:

ÔÇ£The bike is incredible in the fast corner, and the stability is just amazing. However, I am struggling in the slow corners. I am really losing time in these stop-and-go sections. We made some good steps forward towards the end of Qualifying. Still, something is missing, and we have to find the last tenths of a second. When the session was re-started after Jonathan ReaÔÇÖs technical problem I had traffic and was not able to improve my lap time.ÔÇØ

Troy finished the first day of qualifying at Assen with the third quickest time of the day and afterwards said ÔÇ£Today the bike has been the best it has ever been on the first day of a Superbike Weekend!ÔÇØ It has taken a long time for Troy to make such a bold statement, but recent good work by the team in the last round in Valencia and in tests at Mugello has given him a bike that heÔÇÖs really happy with. Of course there is still more work to be done, but today has been the best first day since the team entered the championship at the start of 2009. Troy was second quickest in the morning untimed practice, behind Jonathan Rea (Honda) and was on course for a low 1:36 this afternoon, but had to slow when the flags came out for an oil spillage. In the end, his lap of 1:36.489 was good enough for third, behind Jakub Smrz (Ducati) and Rea. Troy - 3rd, 1:36.489 Well that was the best the bike has ever been on the first day of race weekend and I am happy that weÔÇÖre at this stage. The bike came on a step in Valencia and then we made further progress in our tests in Mugello last week. The improvements in the traction control and engine braking have made the bike a lot better. The bike feels like a normal bike now and I can just go out and ride it. I was on a hot lap when the flags came out and think I would have got into the low 36s for sure, so it was a bit disappointing to have to roll off the throttle and end third. But, I am happy with the way the bike is and I am not pushing that hard. There are some areas of the track where I know I can go quicker, so weÔÇÖll see how tomorrowÔÇÖs practices and Superpole go, but IÔÇÖm pretty confident that weÔÇÖre going to be competitive. The boys have done a good job, the engine feels strong and fast and the gearshifting is nice and smooth. All that, together with the improvements in the traction control and engine braking, is allowing to me to go out and ride quickly. The new section of the track is faster, but I am not sure if it is better to go in fast and exit slow or the other way round. In the race it could be a new passing place and thatÔÇÖs good because there arenÔÇÖt many passing places around here. The track felt quite grippy today, especially in one area where I think there is some new tarmac. All in all, IÔÇÖm looking forward to tomorrow and getting even more out of my bike. See ya, Troy

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announced today that the company has enjoyed a successful first quarter in 2010, with sales increasing by 60% worldwide compared with the same period in 2009.

Sales in APAC were double the same period in 2009, with sales in Mainland China more than trebling. Sales in the United States, Europe and the Middle East also showed substantial growth.

Front Row for Corser but no Superpole – yet.

Corser will start on the front row in P3. In past races he has demonstrated his ability to pull hole shots at the start and win the race to turn one. What will he be able to do with an unobstructed view of turn one in Sunday’s races?

Xaus fell to the third row after ending the morning practice in P4. Fans have to hope that this was a result of a the team focusing all of its efforts on putting Corser on row one and trying to win the Superpole. Sunday he must do all he can to fight to the front to protect Corser’s backside from challenge and pick up the baton if disaster strikes.

Aprilia’s performance surprised me. Camier was able to pull P5 and a second row while team leader Biaggi is starting along side Xaus on the third row.

Yamaha was conspicuous in its absence in Superpole 3. Crutchlow was only able to post a P9 and missed the final round of qualifying as a result. Sunday may be a different story.

Haga, who was competing for the riders championship last year managed only a P15.

Should be a great race.

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport continued the upward trend from the last couple of weeks in Assen (NED) on Saturday. Troy Corser (AUS) achieved the team’s best ever qualifying result in the FIM Superbike World Championship. The 38-year-old finished the Superpole 3 qualifying in third. Ruben Xaus (ESP) will start Sunday’s races from 12th. Prior to this the team’s best qualifying position was fifth for Troy at the previous round in Valencia (ESP).

I simply need more mileage and time on the bike. However, I am always pushing to the limit. I had a minor, controlled crash on my final flying lap in Superpole 2. I was mid corner and mid throttle. I think a little more would have been possible today. Congratulations to Troy and the team as they did a great job.”

Maxime Berger (Ten Kate Race Junior Honda) took his first pole of the 2010 season, ahead of Suzuki rider Davide Giugliano (Team06 Suzuki).

Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia) could not add to his pole total of two so far, and now starts this race third on the grid.

Michele Magnoni (SCI Garvie Image Honda) took the final place on the front row, in a class with 27 riders on the grid.

Danilo Petrucci (Pedercini Kawasaki) was the highest-placed Kawasaki rider, sixth.

Race 1: Corser lead for half the first 10 laps of the race but finishes fifth while Rea wins for his Dutch team. Rea took over on the 11th lap briefly loosing the lead to Toesland but regaining it to take the victory in the first race.

When the times for Sector 1 lit up Corser jumped back into the Assen Race 2 lead.by lap 2 Rea had taken the lead by 0.271 seconds. Camier on his Aprilia was in P3 but 0.871 adrift of the leader.

Rea was shown as the leader but when Sector 2 times went up Corser was shown red and had taken the lead from him opening a slim 0.0674 second lead.

Rea has retaken the lead with Haslam squeezing past Corser dropping him from the lead to P3. Smrz moved around Camier to take over 4th for Ducati leaving Camier in P5.

Corser had been 0.469 seconds behind the leader Rae then moved to second and back into the lead!

He is shown as hold a 0.163 second lead over ReaÔÇÖs Honda in P2.
