    Swing Arm Nut Socket

The traditional Airhead wisdom for getting a socket to fit on the 27mm swingarm nut says "take a socket to your local machine shop and have them turn it down for you". Okay, I called FOUR local machine shops, three refused to do it at all and the last one wanted a $300 "set up fee". Anybody out there have a better idea? I live in Southern California.

I walked over to my grinder and kept skimming until it fit. Gloves and eye protection suggested. Works just fine.

I've heard that some sockets fit without any outside grinding...like a 1-1/16". You'll still need to trim off the inside bevel by grinding or filing away the leading edge to the socket.

I chucked one up in a drill motor with a 1/2" chuck and then put in a workbench vise and let it run. Then I grabbed the Dremel and ground the diameter until it was small enough to fit. Because the socket is turning it comes out pretty perfect. I used the same technique to face a socket to get the fork stanchion nuts off.

You need to find a lower class of machine shops. Those S. Cal. aerospace, CNC, high zoot guys are way too proud of themselves. Dennis Kessler got a farm implement sprocket re-machined to fit his Triumph in Saskatchewan during the 2001 Iron Butt Rally for a few bucks. Skimming that socket in a lathe would take a competent machinist about 2 minutes.

Head out to small town farm country and find a decent machine shop.

When I told my younger brother what I wanted and handed him the socket, he took it over to a bench grinder and did it by hand in about 2 minutes. It didn't exactly satisfy my esthetic demands for having it precisely done, but it works just fine.

$300 to do the job. That's just another way of saying no. And on the rare chance someone says yes, they make a killing.

my point exactly. In fact, just to feel less maverick, I took a marker and wrote BMW on it. And yes, I was contacted by their lawyer forthwith to remove the infringement. But I didn't -Bob
