    Transmission lube leak

Bike is a '94 R100RT. Transmission oil is dripping from the shift linkage where the linkage attaches to the transmission case.

I have never had the shift linkage apart so I would like to know what is required here and what type of seal this is. A bolt with an internal hex recess attaches the mechanism to what I believe is a shaft inside the transmission. I have heard that it is not necessary to get inside the transmission to replace this seal. Correct?

If I remove this one bolt, can the linkage to be moved aside for seal replacement?

The seal is available from any dealer or airhead parts supplier. Once you remove the bolt you can pull the shift lever out. You will need to disconnect the shift lever from the linkage. Once the shift lever is removed you will have direct access to the seal. Take a good look at the seal before you remove it to see how deeply it is set in the case. It will be a good visual reference when you set the new one.

That opening in tranny case is below the oil level, so oil will leak out when you open it. If you want to avoid draining the tranny you need to lay the bike on its side. Of course, you need to remove the battery if it is not an AGM type.

Select the correct size socket to use as a punch and fully seat the new seal with a few taps of a hammer and reassemble.
