    GPS mounting

I want to custom mount a GPS using the handle bar bolts (see photo) on my 96 R1100RT. Question is: how much are these torqued? what should I know before loosening one of these bolts.

    handle bar bolts

No worry, I just did that on my 03 rt. The bolts should be torqued 16-20 ft lbs. I raised my bars also and nothing is under there thats going to jump up and scare you. I used the ram ball mount on the top bolt of the left bar. The kit had a spacer that fits in the groove of the bar where the bolt goes into. Consequently I had to use a bolt 1/2 inch longer which I got at Fastenal, a store that deals in bolts etc. You may, if need be get one at ace hardware.

    bolt to use

    T-GCR11B Bolt
    GCR11B Bolt/spacer for R1100RT (use with RAM-B-252 or RAM-B-272, for example)

That is what I used on my R bike.
Just use this bolt, it's designed to replace one of the bolts and I used the B-252. Pull it up on the ram-mount page.

Or you could do what I did on my 99RT. the bike came with an accessory shelf, but their not expensive. I drilled a hole in my shelf, and mounted a Ram mount dead center. I then attached my Garmin Zumo to the mount. It locates the GPS above the Tach & Speedo. I can put my windscreen all the way down, and still have 1/2" clearance between the GPS and windscreen. Makes it easy to read, without taking your eyes off the road...

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but.....

I'm finally going to be able to pick up my new to me R850R in three weeks. I found this thread while searching for mounting ideas for the Garmin.

cruise_carter mentioned needing a slightly longer bolt, but I searched the RAM site and could not find the part number he listed.

    " T-GCR11B Bolt
    GCR11B Bolt/spacer for R1100RT (use with RAM-B-252 or RAM-B-272, for example)"

Since I don't know what size bolts they are will one of these work? If not can someone please advise what size? I can pick up a single bolt at the Fasteners down the street.......

    (1 QTY) M8 x 55 bolt
    (1 QTY) M8 x 60 bolt
    (1 QTY) M8 x 65 bolt

A great solution is a mount made by one of the members here, Jim.
It replaces the black plastic cover in the middle of the handlebars and incorporates a Ram ball mount. It is a very professionally looking piece of metal turning and polishing. I have one and it is perfect. Took less than 2 minutes to mount, didn't have to undo anything. Solid as a rock. He has photos somewhere here, but I can't find them. Maybe someone else can track the link. If not I have his email address, so PM me.

Wow, thanks for the nice 'plug' Paul, ha,ha. This is a link to a couple of photos that will show the item I turn out on a CNC lathe whenever I can get next to it...and I have some 6061T6 billet aluminum available.

I only make a couple a month, or whenever I get a request from a fellow RT'er for one. Comes with the 1" Ram Ball Mount and I ask $65.00 which includes air mail shipping.

Send me a PM if you think you might like one, it fits all RT's from '95 thru '09.
