    Cast Wheel Problem (r80rt rear)

Need a little help gang -

I opened my rear wheel up to observer the shoes, and I found a gouge inthe cast that encloses the teeth on the wheel side of the final drive. Attached pic. I bought this bike a year ago and put about 7k miles on it. I didnt notice any debris in the wheel, so I figure it is an old injury. Thoughts would be appreciated: is it dangerous to use it? Can it be repaired?

    Tony,
The picture is too small and dark to see any detail at all.

Pics were taken at high rez. When trying to upload, said 160k max, couldnt get much bigger! Nu user blues!

The cut in the metal goes thru.
The question is, will it pose a problem if I leave it that way and grease the teeth.

    Tony,
I sent you a PM. Try sending the pic to me full size and I'll drop the resolution without making it so small.

    Tony,
Here is your pic with a little enhancement. I don't think this will weaken the hub at all for practical purposes.

Thanks alot Mick. I can obviously use a little photography time.

I appreciate ths info in regard to patching it up.

Has anyone ever attempted replacing this spline assy? Maybe drilling out the rivets and making a mod of some type?

    Is the part even available?

    Tony,
There are a couple of places that can repair your drive spline AND the driven hub in the wheel. Here is one of them from a note in another forum......

    (Begin attached note)
    > If you need the splines welded up and re-cut on your FD, Judson Cycle
    > does a superb job (507) 947-3852. I had mine done last winter and they
    > fit into the new drive cup with a perfect mesh (they look so purdy when
    > you get them back it seems like a shame to dirty them up).

I spoke to the folks at Judson Cycle in Minnesota (the southern part
I'm told :-) They said that it would be about $175 to weld and re-cut
the splines. They recommended waiting until winter as they were quite
busy at present and there might be a month or so delay.

Winter sounds like a plan for me - I enquired as to when their winters
began - I thought perhaps in September if they were in Minnesota.
That's where the southern MN note came from - they said that good
    riding was had into November.

The welded splines are said to be stronger that the original splines.
Of course the hub splines need to be re-newed at the same time.
The folks at Judson said that they routinely used hi-strength steel
nuts and bolts to re-attache the hub spline cup.

Good news for me and a much less expensive way to go than
replacing the pinion gear set and doing the re-shimming.
    (end attached note)

You need to inspect BOTH splines. If the drive spline is worn, you might as well do them both. If your drive spline is like new, I'd just buy the hub and and replace it. It appears that your driven hub was damaged externally and not inside where the splines reside.

    Mick
