    Question Engine just dies!

I own a 1994 R1100RSL with 32,000 miles. Lately the engine has died on me a couple of times. The first time I was going down a straight level road at about 60 mph when the engine just quit. No warning. I pulled over to the side of the road and after a few tries it started. It seemed to be at full strength electrically. That evening when I tried to leave work it wouldn't start. Again it cranked fine. After several minutes it started and ran fine all 35 miles home. Now I'm nervous to ride it. I started it twice this past weekend in the garage and it ran fine. Does anybody have any ideas of simple tests to try to help determine what is going on?

Next time it doesn't start check spark. If none, could be the Hall Effect Sensor(HES) wiring.

This problem seems to be moisture related but...

I'm no genius, I'm just repeating what I've read here. This bike at this age probably has an HES problem.

Other likelyhood is fuel pressure, maybe a clogged filter. Make sure fuel pump fuse has good contacts.

The other part of the triangle is compression but I think you can rule that out because it wouldn't be intermittant.

    Hope this helps.

    Engine just dies!

I tried to start my bike tonight but it refused. I did notice something different than usual. Normally when I turn the key to the "ON" position there is an electrical whirring noise. I assumed this was the fuel pump. I always heard it before I hit the starter button. Tonight I did not hear that noise. The engine turned over but refused to start. Would this indicate a problem with the fuel pump? or maybe the electrical contacts for the pump? It seems to happen at random times.

    Pablo:

I'm not having any success posting a picture of the fuse box.

You have narrowed it down to the fuel pump which is run by fuse #6 and relay #6.

Check the contacts for corrosion. Failing that, swap relays 6, and 5(horn).

You will lose the horn but the bike might run.

    Hope this helps.

You definately need the fuel pump to prime up upon starting.

check the kickstand switch to see if it may be loose.

Good idea Zee but the bike won't crank unless the sidestand and kill switch are 'greenlight'.

If you look at this old thread you can pick out what you need including the fusebox layout.

    It Runs

Thanks to everybody for their suggestions! I finally ordered a fuel pump kit and a fuel filter from Beemerboneyard and installed them this weekend. It took me awhile but I worked slowly and listened to the game. I took a shake down ride yesterday and rode to work today. Everything went fine with no leaks.
