    The atmosphere conditions count for sure ...
    The first is a Salton Sea sunrise the second is from the Marin Headlands.

    This is a sunrise on the SF Bay near the San Mateo bridge... (note the fog over Fremont)

    Montana Sunrise

    The little red tint in the sunrise was from a touch of wildfire smoke from Canada, the smoke only lasted one day.

    Sunrise behind the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge



    As for the sunrise/sunset question: look at the EXIF meta-data. This photo was shot at 6:37 in the morning on Halloween, 2005. Not many sunsets occur that hour of the morning at this latitude
