I don't know about rocketman, but I was there when mine were taken...

From my experience.. sunrise skies are darker. The day lights faster in the morning, than it darkens in the afternoon. I'm in San Francisco and that's how it is in my neighborhood.

Unless there are clouds, sunrises are very short, but sometimes the preglows are fantastic (similarly the afternoon afterglows can be great). I prefer morning light, it seems to leave softer shadows.

The last sunrise I posted was in Daytona over the ocean in light rain. If you look closely you can see dark spots of rain on my lens (I was lazy and didn't clone out). The one before that (preglow) was over the Salton Sea in Socal.

You are absolutely right however, it is difficult to tell sunrise from sunsets.

If you see a lot of bright light, but do not see the sun, it is sunrise.
If you see the sun, and yellow / orange / red light, it is the sunset.

A lot has to do with atmospheric conditions. We have a lot of fog in San Francisco and that thinking doesn't hold water here.

I lived in SF for a year.
One of the most beautiful cities in the world.
But never saw the sun rises from the sea ...

Is that the sea in the photo ? is it in SF ?

The atmosphere conditions count for sure ...
