First offical unoffical MOA photo phorum gathering

I headed out to a tech session of the local Va. group and someone walks up to me and introduces himself as Ben Recci (hope I spelled that right!) and it took me a moment to connect ....Oh! Yeah Ben of the MOA photo phorum! Ha Ha. he's on my local club board but I never made the connection Duh, brains slowing down I guess. Anyway we had a nice chat (for like 2-3hours!) and I got to touch his Canon G7, sweet camera, now I really want the G9! Dang you Ben

He's just north on me (by one state's width) but I never stopped to think we might meet up at the tech session even though it was in MD so fairly close to the PA line. Cool! Nice dude too.

So now I have met someone in person from this forum as short a time as it has run. Can't wait to met more this summer.

Oh. and I didn't take a single shot the whole day even though I had both my P&S and DSLR I spent so much time chatting it up with everyone, and for me to talk for nearly 7 hours in a row is just plain weird! Ha Ha! Oh, and Tom you need to get one of those G9's I know what I'm getting next! Great display nice layout of controls and having the grid display in the LCD is sweet, not to mention the size of the LCD. I can see why he went to just the G7 and G9 and dropped his DSLR.
Fun day and great weather, it hit the mid 50's.

yes well sort of....he's a dangerous person to be around.......if you see him coming .......RUN!!!

run quickly as fast as you can......

and he's not always 100% percent honest, such as when I asked him if the G9 had an active histogram display option in shooting mode..he said it didn't and well it does

and how do I know this you might ask?

and why should you run when you see him coming??? well again another good question

it will cost you some big bux if he lets you play with his G7 and instead of buying the lens you wanted........

you'll wind up running running running

all the way to the nearest camera store and buying one of these..

I know because it happened to me! and that is how I know it has an active histogram display option in the shooting mode.

first four shots taken down in the town of Occoquan on the way back from the camera store. Since they only had the display model I got it for a good deal already charged up with 1 gig memory card. Its a place I've been buying from for the past 30 years so they know me and I trust them and never gotten a bum deal from them and the display model was only 3 weeks old so....

looking down river at 7.5mm wide ange

same shot at full zoom (6x optical)

all straight out of the camera, un retouched..

its basically a DSLR without the "D" VERY SWEET!!!!!

As I said a very dangerous man to hang around.....

Yeah, I was gonna take a shot while you were talking about the Festival of Fives, because you had a really neat shaft of light coming across your shoulder and face, but I didnÔÇÖt want to interrupt you.

Man, I can't believe you bought a G9 already! But, knowing you, you'll use it everyday. And thanks for letting me know it has an active histogram, too!!! I normally shoot in the manual mode (except while I'm using that pesky 550EX), how do you get the histogram? What else can you teach me about the G9?

    Welcome the the G9er Club!!!

Well this just makes me warm and fuzzy all over.

First of all, being the neologist that I am, I love the word phorum. It is how we should refer to ourselves from here on out.

Second, very cool that Jeff and Ben ran into each other. Love it.

Now, Jeff, It takes a big man to out-gadget me. Well done on the G9, and thank you for posting a few pictures. I have the cash on hand and am just waiting to pull the trigger. I'm fighting the feeling that Canon or someone may come out with a compact camera like the G9 with an APS-C sensor rather than one of those itty-bitty sensors. Most of the reviews say the image quality plumets at ISO 200 and above.

I've taken to carrying around my S80 again and I'm getting a lot of shots that I would normally miss. It's main drawback is no IS.

    Hmmmm, G9. . . .

The Canon G9 has a 1/1.7. and IS and Face recognition and well just about everything! Sweet, not quite as small as my Cybershot but hey can't have everything, right? I know the 1/1.7 is a good bit smaller than a DSLR or but all the additional features are the real selling points, I'm still keeping my DSLR for sure but compared to my other P&S this far out does it. for serious night shots and higher ISO setting the DSLR will be the one of choice when I have it, but the convenience of the G9 is great to have on the run.
I also found an online store that so far as I can tell has a very good seller rating and they have the G9 for 339, called TECHONdigital, I know that often big discounts like that mean the seller is questionable but haven't found anything yet after a quick internet search to say anything but good things about them. I would have pursued my search had it not been that my dealer had such a good price and the instant gratification factor!
At that price you could get the wide angle add on and filter ring for what they go for in the stores at 469-499. I lucked out and got mine for 429 cause it was the store demo but like i said I have known them for years and buy all my cameras from them so...I love my tech toys!

You sound happy with and excited about your purchase. Good for you for purchasing it locally. I have a local dealer that I like to trade with, but he's wanting five-something for one. I just can't make that large of a donation.

I'm a bit suspicious of the $339 price, in spite of your research. All the major discount places are offering it for 439-459. That means that's very near (or even at) cost. Canon's not selling them to dealers for anywhere near $339, so how can this dealer do it? Something's got to be fishy. Are they in Brooklyn? For some reason, that neighborhood is notorious for shady photo retailers. . . .

I pretty much do business exclusively with B&H in New York and Canoga Camera in LA. I'll trade with Samy's in LA once in a while, but Canoga's the David to their Goliath.

Unfortunately, the wide angle is right out for me:

As bad as I want the 28mm equivalent, this is just re-freaking-diculous. I had an equally gargantuan adapter on my Nikon 5700 and it just wasn't cool. The adapter for the 900/950/995 was large, but far more reasonable than this. I'll just give up and accept 35mm equivalent. It was good enough for Henri Cartier-Bresson, so it'll have to do for me.

yeah, I hear you on the $339 and I didn't do much looking around on them but unlike the other folks that popped right up with a number of complaints (the one selling the D80 for like $450) I didn't see anything immediately negative, for whatever that's worth...
I always prefer local when I can, partly because there is nothing like a hands-on look see. and I like to support the little guy, when possible.
Not that Penn Camera is all that small, but...

I'm glad you like "phorum" it does seem to fit, don't it?

You should have seen Ben with G9, the wide-angle lens and big flash unit, you could hardly see the camera itself, reminded me of some rat bikes I've seen that had so much stuff hanging off it you couldn't hardy see the bike itself! Ha Ha! (No offense Ben with the rat bike reference, the G9 is definitely not a rat, but boy was it buried under the attachments!)

To my way of thinking, if one is going to go the wide angle + flash route, a Rebel XT or XTi body might be a better choice. They're about 60% the size of the 20/30/40Ds. I just sold mine and have regretted it several times since.

Having said all that, I'm supremely confident that Ben knows what he's doing.

Ha. My ears are burning. The G9 does look a little awkward with a full size flash attached. Think of it as a paradigm shift! And you haven't seen it with my Stroboframe and Photoflex softbox attached (I didn't think the world or BMWBMW was quite ready for that). Photography is a lot like golf: there are no style points, only outcomes.

Actually what I need is a strobe that is compatible with the G9. With the 550EX it will only use TTL metering in the auto mode (and probably program or any of those) and the G9 wants to default to either slow shutter speeds (1/60 or less) and high ISOs, which leads to blurry and/or noisy pictures. BUT in tinkering, it can be forced to make nice exposures--but I'm not that patient.
