What we did at the rally

Rob shows up on Thursday with Chace and is riding the R1200RPB. He's going to run it in the Iron Butt this year and it's the very model of the motto: "You never know how much is enough until you know how much is more than enough." It's not more than enough and seems to be right at enough, if not a tiny smidge over.

I see that it attracts viewers like a bug light in the bayou. It's over at Rocky Mayer's seat stand for a while and there's a steady stream of folks coming by to check it out. No matter how many gizmos you've got on your bike, or how trick your gizmos are, this one has you beat.

Give up now. It's a Radio Shack on wheels.

I learned my lesson

Some may focus on the rally as a place to buy things for their bike, or as a place to hang out for a few days, or as a beer stop or something. For me, rallies are like reunions. See these folks? That's Bubba Zanetti on his S, Rob Nye, Chacifer and our own Knary. Tina's hiding on the right.

I'd ride anywhere with these people. I've covered big chunks of the country with a couple of them and know that when the **** comes down, they're going to be on board and ready to deal with whatever needs to happen.

I met them all through organized motorcycling, either the YBs or the MOA.

This is what a rally is about. Bubba's from W. MA, Knary from Portland, OR, Chace and Rob are from RI and we're from SF, CA. This rally is where we can meet and catch up. And, just like family, we pick right up where we left off last time.

The national rally is about making friends and catching up with new ones. The rest is just gravy. How do you put a value on that? $35? Hell, I'd pay $75 and consider it a deal and a half.

*GREAT* stuff Dave! I really loved Camp Beers and I like that thing about it being a nexus of weirdness...one of the coolest terms I've ever heard for anything!

Hodag and Brad set up Camp BEERS over on the other side of the rally. It's bounded by a bunch of old cable spools, more trash cans than one could imagine and gradually turns itself into a sort of nexus of weirdness in the middle of the whole place.

You weren't too far from us (Gateway Riders). On Wednesday one of our group rolled one of those spools to our camp to use as a table... east toward the port-a-potty line and across from the RVs.
