    Question Final Drive Alternatives

I took my 2002 R1150 R in for servicing and my mechanic says the final drive is shot (ouch!) and has to be replaced. I really dont have $1100 bucks laying around for a new one so, I went looking for a cheaper alternative (used).

Will a R1100 RT final drive work on a R1150 R? Which models and years will? How many miles should I allow on this part (20K, 30K, 60K) ? Anybody know where I can lay my hands on a final drive relatively cheap ($500ish)?

    Thanks everyone!

While it is sometimes true that a complete replacement might be less expensive or at least more cost effective than a repair - I am decidedly curious as to what is wrong with the final drive that makes it shot. A damaged ring/pinion gearset might mean it is smart to replace the whole unit, or a fractured case might mean the same thing - but short of that I wonder what makes it shot?

Just kind of wondering what "shot" means. Usually the big bearing needs replacement, incl the big seal and an o ring. Sometimes the inside crown bearing. If the pinion leaks, then a pinion seal, ring, and a nut. If there is metal gone off the pinion and ring gear, then that might be considered "shot".
There are used parts usually available for about half of list if they are good parts. I would consider 20K to be a good part if it is a good part.
Some of y'all chime in here with some used parts places that you have been satisfied with...

Oh. Just noticed your post Paul...sounds familar...

"Shot" - Previous owner did not maintain final drive and now pinion has been ground down to imminent failure.

Any ideas on whether a R1100 RT drive will work? I've found a near new one, but I need to move on it quick.

    Thanks fellas.

The ETK parts fiche shows them to be interchangeable if both rear drives are the same ratio and both ABS.

I put an R1100R ABS final drive on my R1150RS to change in fd ratio on purpose, if you have ABS it should fit fine but you need to check the ratios (they are stamped on the housing ie 33/11 or similar.

    check the Beemer Boneyard

i recently purchased a used final drive from a friend. it did not have a hole for the speedometer pulse generator (didn't realize till i got home). it is currently out being drilled and having a sensor wheel put in as well as being re-shimmed by someone who has performed the mod a few times. total for the drive plus the work will be under 500 dollars. anything is possible and it should be fairly easy to get around paying that new price.

and i agree with paul, repair should be considered. i had a damaged crown gear/hub, so no point for me.
