    Unhappy R100 Sidestand Pin

    I have a 1977 R100RS with a worn side stand pin.
Several months ago I asked the membership on the Forum what the part number is for a new pin and some one got back to me with the # 46 51 1 231 233. I was grateful for the quick responce and it wan't till recently that I got around to ordering the part.
I was all set to change the pin and I thought I would try it in my sidestand to see how tight a fit it was. The pin is too large to fit in the hole and that was my old worn sidestand not the new one!
Has anyone changed the pin? if so what part number is the right one?

    Thanks Darryl

That number shows to be the oversize pin, or clovis pin in BMW speak. The hole in the sidestand does not wear in a perfect over size to fit that pin. I did that fix to my R90 back in '90. I had the bike apart for a econo resto at the time, which was a perfect time to do a job like that. To do the job properly the engine has to be removed to get access to the original pin. It's really more of a machinist type job. If I remember right I machined the old pin out and reamed the hole out to fit the new oversize pin then welded it in. Then I reamed the hole out of the sidestand to fit the pin. It's not an easy job. A lot of the the tech guys on this site will tell U to remove the stock stand and go with some version of the brown side stand, as the stock stand is a piece of junk. I've got my bike back apart and I'll probably do the fix again, but will probably go with a new BMW sidestand in addition to a new pin. After 33 years of use I know the stand also has some bend in it, in addition to the wear in the pin and the hole in the stand. Again the aftermarket stand my be a better way for U to go. Save the pin and if for some reason U have the engine out in the future do the fix then. Goodluck with your project.

Thanks Barry; Sounds like a job for next winter! I might bite the bullet and get a Brown Side Stand after all!

    Brown side stand

As soon as I got my Airhead one of the first things that I changed was the side stand. I installed a Brown sidestand and I love it. It is much easier to deploy and I feel much safer with it.
    Keep the rubber side down!!
