    Horicon Marsh

    Little Everglades of the North
The Horicon Marsh is the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States.

Due to its importance to wildlife,
Horicon Marsh has been designated as a "Wetland of International Importance"
and a "Globally Important Bird Area."

"One of the 12 best birding spots in North America."

    famed birder Roger Tory Peterson

    Directions:
50 miles north and west of Milwaukee is the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge Area.
The best place to access (and cross) the north end of the Parkway is Highway 49.
Several scenic overlooks around the marsh allow you to view the marsh's different highlights, including the birds and animals that reside there.

Follow the brown signs for the Horicon Marsh Parkway,
an estimated 50-mile auto tour that encircles the Horicon Marsh,

The Fall, especially October is my favorite time to see the Marsh.
A nice detour is the five mile loop Auto Trail off of highway 49.
Another good ride is Horicon Marsh Parkway on the east side of the marsh.

Horicon offers canoe & kayak rentals and pontoon tours. http://www.blueheronlanding.com/index.htm

    Hartford Heritage Auto Museum
collection of Kissel cars in Hartford.

The Kissel family manufactured automobiles in Hartford through 1929
and "Black Tuesday"s crash of the stock market.

KisselÔÇÖs were luxury automobiles purchased by the wealthy from coast to coast,
including the Hollywood movie stars of the 1920s.

    Wisconsin's Ethnic Settlement Trail
Most Stagecoach routes are as straight and stop at as many towns as possible,
and the Milwaukee to Green Bay Historical Trail is no exception.
I have taken pictures at various spots on the trail

In 1803-1860 the lands lying between the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers
and encompassing the present states of Ohio, upper and lower Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and parts Minnesota
    were called the Northwest Territory.

In 1849, President Zachary Taylor released some of these lands,
thereby making them available for purchase for homesteads.
Some of these lands were documented as purchased as early as 1847,
although the State of Wisconsin was not officially formed until 1848.

    Howards Grove Meat Market
continuous operation for more than 100 years,
    with only four owners.

The Market makes German Style Products.

    This Meat Market is excellent,
    but too pricey for me,
I get my bulk custom meat from Bernie's Meat Market in downtown Port Washington.
