The film crew installed this contour billboard to cover-up the south end of Main Street. The bill board looks like concrete, but is made of plywood, then sprayed dry wall cement on it's surface. The sign looks very pretty, till it was sprayed with dirt to look like it would in Depression era Chicago.

In April 1927, the First National Bank building, located in Oshkosh at Main and Washington opened. This was the third building constructed on this site. It was an eight-story, bank and office building that cost $550,000.

The making of the movie Public Enemies was an eye opening experience for me. It was cool to see the movie company putting up props and getting ready to shot the movie. I was under the wrong impression that much of the movie was made on a computer. The above photo was taken across from the bank that John Dillinger robbed in the movie. The workers are installing a panel with charges set to simulate bullet explosions.

Note the life like machine gun holes. I also notices some red blood capsules on a building next door.

The Public Enemies movie set was set in a "T" form. This photo is taken with the large billboard to my back, with the Soup kitchen and Homes barbershop to the left. To the right in the picture is the 8 story Bank and down that street is the Oshkosh Public Library.

What's Oshkosh supposed to be?

#Above, Masonic Temple building on Washington Avenue, Oshkosh, WI. The temple represented the American Bank and Trust Co. in Racine. Dillinger robbed the bank on Nov. 20, 1933.



For filming purposes, parts of Oshkosh will become different locations in "Public Enemies." Universal Studios has yet to confirm all of these details.

Oshkosh, not only famous for the former Oshkosh B'Gosh manufacturing, EAA, Oshkosh Truck, the home of two BMWMOA National Rallies and now a big movie.

Downtown Oshkosh, like many Midwestern downtowns needed a boost and I hope this movie helps. I am hoping it is like the "Field of Dreams" build it and they will come. On my two motorcycle spring rides to Oshkosh , the second ride was after filming and many of the stage props were taken down.

Bryan Burrough's four-and-a-half years of research, poring through tens of thousands of pages of FBI reports, communications, interviews and memos produced a 552-page narrative that traces the overlapping criminal careers of John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, the Barker-Karpis gang, Bonnie and Clyde and Machine Gun Kelly in 1933 and 1934. The book devotes just as much time to the transformation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from a group of bumbling investigators to the modern, interstate crime-fighting force it is today.

In the action-thriller Public Enemies filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale & Marion Cotillard in the story of the legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger, a bank robber whose quick raids made him the Public Enemy number one target of J. Edgar HooverÔÇÖs FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale).


It seemed like no jail could hold Dillinger or no one could arrest him. His charm and wild jailbreaks made him into a modern day Robin Hood to an American public who did not feel sorry for the banks that had pushed the country into the Depression.


Hoover's FBI hit on the idea of using Dillinger capture as a way to make his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI.
