    i have a question

I just started riding Beemers a year ago after having 2 different Honda's for 18 years and i'm hooked on the boxer. I think it's the power band. my first was a R1200C. Was wrecked by a car on the way to Vermont. Has soon as i heald enough and got back to work i bought a R1100RT and love it. But it shifts a little fun sometimes from 2nd to 3rd like the gears are not quite meshed perfect. I've just read about preloading and will try it tomorrow. But i have been hearing conflicting info about spline greasing intervals on the trans. Is this a real problem or a hit or miss one.

    Check out this thread.

Talks about the "roughness" of beemer transmissions. Preloading helps. Shifting the bikes is kinda like golf. There is a sweet spot. Every club is different. Find your sweet spot and strive for it every time. Sorry about your wreck. Glad your back in the saddle.

    And...

    WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!

Tons of great info on here.

I logged about 90K on an oilhead and the gear change was always clunky. It is part of the best. The one thing that I did notice is that when I change the fluids for about 1K it shifted a little smoother. But the clunking is part of the BMW design. I feel that when you hear the clunk, you know the gear is in... you will get used to it.
Have you changed all the fluids, yet? Enjoy it...

    I have a question too

Today I was passing some cars, when suddenly the engine cut off. It scared me, fortunately there was space for me to pull off to the side and check. The ignition was still functioning, all idiot lights looked 'normal'. I hit the starter and the it started right up...everything was fine from then on.

My bike is 2006 R1200GS, with some 4000 miles on it.

Has anybody experienced anyhitng like that? Should I take the bike back to the dealer for a check up? Looking for advice.

    Thanks,

Yep, been there and it is not a good feeling, plus I feel bad having an almost new BMW sitting on the side of the road... You are still in the warrenty window, so the first thing I would do is take it to the dealer, so that they know that there is a problem. It may be isolated, they may not find out what it is, but it is on record... Then again it may also come back at a later time...

From the sounds of it, it could be a fuel problem. I would unlock the gas cap and vent it..., then I would run the tank down, take it off the bike and clean it up... Once you remove the fuel pump, while you are there I would change the fuel filter (hint, hint... I installed an external fuel filter) keep the tank open with a fan going to it for about 3 days... It will dry out completely. You may also want to disconnect the ground and take the front cover off. Your Hall Sensor may have some dirt on it... Take a blow hose and clean it up... Lastly, it may be a clogged fuel injector... maybe your carbon canister went bad and the one way valve is pushing carbon deposits into the tank...
In my case it was a combination of things... First my carbon canister went bad, the first time I had it changed under warranty, the second time I just removed it... The third time it happened it was the hall sensor that went faulty... but that happened after riding in very heavy rain. If water was not involved I would go after the carbon canister; cleaning the fuel tank is not nearly as big a deal as you might think... let the dealer do it and you will spend around $500. You may find out that there is bulletin out on it and it will be all covered, but don't bank on it...
Good luck and let us know what you find....

like i mentioned in your other thread, greasing the spines is a good thing. it can solve some issues with downshifting and with the grease applied to not only the splines, but also the correct areas of the clutch assembly, the bike will feel much smoother overall.

as others have said though, it's a bmw (getrag) transmission, it's not ever gonna be japanese smooth

Thanks a lot Boxerkuh, that was very helpful. I did take my GS to the dealer, he says, he did not find any computer code to tell him that anyhting was wrong. This sure shakes my confidence in the machine. I was planning on taking a long trip to Alaska next year. Now I am wondering if I made the right choice about the bike to ride.

I'll try to follow what you suggest..but winter is setting in here in Vermont and I am not sure I'll do much this year.

    Thanks a lot anyway.

Check out the Long Way Round video,Ewen MacGregor and Charlie Boorman. They travelled around the world, and in some pretty interesting places.on BMWS GS'.

Having said that, you might want to throw the bike at the dealer and say"Fix it to reliabilty".
Sometimes, nothing is a real cool hand.

    Hi jgr451,
I agree with your sentiment. My dealer has always been very good to me and very supportive and obliging. he is not done with my bike yet. I will show him the email from Boxerkuh as well, and hope he takes it in the right spirit. I heard from another fellow rider and he too had Hall effect transducer problem. So let us wait and see. I'll keep you guys informed.

PS. I would love to ride thru the winter....maybe I'll take a ride down south sometime when the weather permits (ie. no snowstorm and temperature not in the negative numbers).

    Thanks,

Are you aware of the rpm's you were running when it cut out?
If you pass redline the limiter will kill the throttle, though it should not cause the engine to quit. When you say "cut off" do you mean you just lost power?

No Sir, I was no way close to red-line on the tach. I also learned that the 2006 boxers do not have a Hall sensor. The dealer had the bike on the computer and found no error-code. Apparently the 2006 bikes with can bus have a very extensive debug facilty. He also teste drove it for many miles over two days...he did not expereince any problem. I am begining to think I may either have hit the 'kill' swtich in error or it was a freak thing ... time will tell.
