    R100r

I posted this earlier but it appears to have disappeared.

A 92 R100R with 25K miles is for sale at $4,500. Is this a fair price? It has top and side GIVI bags, less than 500 miles on front brakes and Metzler tires. NADA says its worth $2,225. How does NADA arrive at a value?
    regards,

regardless of NADA I think a lot has to do with supply and demand for your local area that can dictate a price of a bike
also who is selling it, at a dealer, most times higher then a owner
another comparison would be to look at different web sites and see what they are selling for. For instance e-bay. also, this time of year, even around here more bikes are in the paper for sale and I notice that more are showing up on e-bay, as some people dont like to ride in the winter
also around here, this si the time to look for a bike if you want one for next summer, this is when the deals start, that and after a few good hard rains

I looked into that some time ago and walked away scratching my head.

NADA, the North American Dealers Association (not to be confused with the Columbian Caretel) uses a combination of sale prices reported from its member dealers and sale prices on new regristrations for used vehicles as reported by the customers to states for tax purposes. This information then is messaged in some mysterious - at least to me - manner.

The dealer and the customer are not incentivised by either system to report accurately. Now add in the component of a low volume used motorcycle and it should not suprise you that you are scratching your head at their price.

Do something like a CMA that a realtor would do when they list your home. They seek out recent sales of homes that are comprable to yours and homes that are on the market similar to yours. Now add or subtract for features or blemishes that your home has and uffda theres your homes value don't ya know

It takes a bit of work to do that with the bike youre trying to buy or sell but it will give you a better idea of the dollar value than just looking at NADA. IMHO.

From what I can determine by looking at ebay and cycletrader, I don't think the asking price is far off, but the NADA value caused me to pause. Your responses confirm my opinion that for motorcycles the NADA values are not very accurate. I have an appointment to see this bike tomorrow.

I sold a very clean '92 R100R with 13K in June. The Ebay auction brought $7K.

Thank you Robert. Perhaps I'll own a R100R tomorrow.

    I just saw an 81 R100RT for CAD$3500 (~USD$3250) with 73'000km (~45'000 miles)

Good running order, no bags etc.

So $4500 for a decade newer version doesn't seem outrageous.

R100R, R1100R, R1150R, etc., are IMHO bikes for guys who are going to want a bike with a fairing very shortly.

They're initially basically for guys that have to have new and don't want to take the risk of buying used. Plus, they're cheaper.

Obviously, they can be fun and have their place, i.e. not totally opposed here, but think about your riding needs.

Thumbs up Price is in the ballpark

I don't think that price is outrageous. You can't go by the NADA value books. Generally speaking most Airheads of the 90's can bring around 5 grand if they are in good running order. Given that it is in good running order with not too many miles. Did you buy the bike?

The comment about supply and demand for your local area doesn't really apply for R100R's, as there's usually only a handful for sale on the whole continent. And I think the price sounds decent, but '92 is IMO the least-desireable year for that model.

This sounds about right to me. I spent a few months daydreaming about the R100R and researching the going rate for these bikes. I ended up with mine in June and I couldn't be happier with her. She's a '93 and had about 13K when I got her (pushing 19K now...sooo addictive!).

Veg - your Bat Bike looked fabulous at the MOA Open House this weekend! I'm always glad to see another R100R rider nearby!

    Good luck with your search!

Thanks Mandy- yours did too, and I love the colour! I think mine looks a lot better without the bags, and without a bunch of riding gear hanging all over it (could hardly see the bike under all that stuff!). And it's a work in progress. I'm always tinkering with it and making changes, looking for just the right mix. Done a few custom-touches too. I've had it for three years and I've learned a lot, and the R is a little different from the rest of the Airheads for sure. I think our R's are a great mix of all the BMW worlds and definitely the pinnacle of the Airhead line.
