Broken locking tab on system case

I broke the small red locking tab on one of my system cases. I had noticed that it was a little bent and difficult to turn, so I tried to straighten it out That's when it broke. The latch part still works, but I'm concerned about the security of the contents. Is there a way I can take this apart and fix it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Has anyone else broken one of these?

Is there a way to fix it without replacing the whole latch assembly?

Check out the responces to my post on mutifunction box. the part is $200, the rivits are $40 and the dealer wants $50 labor. Yep, $300 or do it yourself. I'm going to shop for a used inner bag myself. good luck.

    Ouch!

That hurts just to hear it. $200.00? I might have to live with it for a while until I figure out something. I'm going to try taking it apart to see what I come up with.

This reply won't help you fix your problem, but I wanted to chime in and say that, IMO, the design of these latches is very poor. Dealer warned me about how fragile they were, but I ended up snapping one anyway in the same manner you did. Mine continue to work fine without the lock. I figure if I'm depending on a plastic case to protect something truly valuable, I probably deserve what I get. But who knew the most valuable thing in my case was the $#!@*! latch?

    The fix isn't too bad

This is very common. The fix is to order part number 71607654337 Locking Mechanism F Multifunction Box. The price is about $46.00. It comes with everything that you need to replace the broken orange tab. Instructions come with the kit. It is a very easy fix. You need item # 13.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a write-up on this subject a year or two (or three?) ago in the BMWON magazine? I'm still trying to find the back issue. The article described (in detail) the repair procedure . . . . and I seem to recall it was not trivial.

doesnt the tab keep the handle from opening up and therefore case from flying off?

I dunno what the damn tab does. My case works exactly the same as it did before. I've ridden thousands of miles, in all weather, on bumpy roads, on dirt roads, even dumped it in sand once. The thing still locks.

Thank you Kaltzg, I'll get the part on order Tuesday. I appreciate your time. $46.00 sounds a lot better than $200.00

    Thanks,

That's the idea. But both the locking arm and the bag mount can wear, so it's also possible for the case to demount iself even if the handles remain down in the "locked" position. JWhite518's been lucky so far.

What ?!? You mean I'm not the only fool to do this?

I broke one off a few thousand miles back and being a commute to work rider have actually come to prefer having one side bag that doesn't require the key.

I figure that when I tour I'll just have to remember not to leave valuables in that case.
