    R1150R touring windshields

I ride in a full upright, touring position. This is my 3rd 'naked R', the two previous were airheads. I've been through 5 windshields, trying to avoid being buffetted above 70 mph. The best I've found so far is the factory touring shield, the tall one, but it's still not adequate. Anyone out there solved this dilemma? Know anything about 'Laminar-Lips' or other devices?

If you use the search feature up on the forum tool bar and enter in laminar lip you will pull up many threads that have mentioned laminar lips. Here is one example.

You may find what you are looking for in one of them or try PM to a poster with a follow-up question.

I am 6'2" and I ride a 2002 R1150R with the tall seat and a sheepskin pad on top of that, so I sit up high. With the touring screen, I do get a lot of wind around my head. I don't like it, but I have adjusted to it, and I usually wear ear plugs.

I tried the Laminar Lip for a while, but I did not like it. This was just my personal experience. I know that other people have benefitted from these, so I am not knocking the Laminar Lip. It just did not work for my application.

I found that the lip would create more buffeting when large trucks were near. It made the wind screen move more.

Because everyone's situation is different, I would suggest that you look for a used Lip and try it out. I sold mine for a very reasonable price, and I am sure that others may also be selling them.

i've got an '02 R1150RA with a sport screen. i'm 6', sargent seat (shorter than BMW tall seat, taller than BMW short seat) and i go with and without sheepskin.

i get nice clean air starting right at my helmet. it's choppy at my neck. i find this to be no problem at all, unless i'm behind an SUV/big truck, and it's really mixed up.

i use that choppy air i get from those vehicles as a reminder to back off, give them some space, and increase my reaction time.

what are your expectations for wind/noise on this bike?

I have had the speedster, BMW sport and now a Cee Bailey Euro standard. The Cee is so far the best, though not perfect, it keeps the wind off my shoulders and neck but leaves my head in nice clean air. I always ride with a full face helmet and the Cee keeps nice air on my head to keep me cool. Now I need to modify the sport to allow me to have a real short, speedster type screen so I can just switch to a more naked bike without removing the PITA mounting hardware from bike!

    R1150R touring windshields

I've had two Parabellum windshields. The quality, price and customer service were all good.

    r1150r windshield

    tawill841,

    I have '03 r also. Mine has the sport? (short screen p/n 9999 0000 411). I am5'9", unknown stock seat.

Trimming the screen where it wraps around the headlite to about a 1" gap has helped with buffeting. This lets some air in, under the screen. The high speed air from above the screen meets the low speed air at about my nose. Both air streams appear to be smooth. I have yet to try this combo in the rain. It is still a noisy ride, but i always wear earplugs. I also have the factory tank bag mounted, I don't know if this influences anything. The tank bag will stay, as it is very handy. A low buck approach for sure. I may consider taking a little more off. More miles of testing is in order.

This about a 1/2 hour job with masking tape, a sharpie, jigsaw and sandpaper.

Parabellum wind screens really do work. The maker has it down to a science!

    Thanks guys:

Craig - I like your idea and may try it.

This is actually my 5th windshield for this scooter. I've been through several parabellums (which I like) and the new (tallest) Cee Bailey. I'm not ready to spring for the Aeroflows yet, though I may have to.

None of them performed any better than the factory touring windshield. Since it's better looking, I elected to keep it. Incidentally, If anyone is interested in a like-new Cee Bailey (30 minutes on the bike), they can have it for half price.

I went ahead and ordered the Laminar-Lip and shall install it in a week or so. If that doesn't get what I want, I'm thinking of the 'tank wings' put out by Aeroflow.

Also, I got fed up with the lack of setback in the 'bar-back' universe out there. I hired a designer to make shop drawings for one with about a 2.5" setback and 2" rise. He's about done. After that, I'll get quotes from machine shops to make them. I probably will have to get a dozen or so to defray the set-up costs. If anyone is interested in one, let me know.

I had a parabellum on my R. The previous owner had chopped the top of it off flat. I still didn't get any buffetting. Even in triple digits it was smooth.
