i have the same issue, my Lufmeister is pushing 15 years and has been 'repacked' once under warr. But now that they are no longer around i might do what you did.
hows the smell/smoke after a few...

I had to push start my K100RT a dozen times just this spring when he battery was failing .
Many moons ago I had to do the same , no worries.

I would also recomend you change your gear and rear drive fluids. (easy to do both and easy to find gear oil)
If your oils/fluids are clean then thats one big headache not in your future.
