Re building them with a kit from Bing
That is the way I went. Bing will rebuild them for you also, but at a cost.
One other question while we're here... the bike is a 2000 with 48k... and what point should I expect the failure of the mentioned potential issues? (valve seals, head gasket, etc.)[/QUOTE]

Raise the preload on the rear shock. A low hight will make the bike hard to corner, a high hight will make it dive in.
Give it a try!

Paul is right, they do have blue thread lock on them. Use a heat gun till they are about 150 deg. They will still be tight but mushy. You will have to hold the tube with your hand.
Remove the black side panel, use a long extension and flex joint, loosen the 13mm nut and hand adjust the bolt. Set the play. Use Velcro to hold clutch in at handle and tighten.
You may want to try to cut down the rear seat rubbers 1/2 inch and file the adjustable arm rubbers till flat. That will lower the seat.
Lower the rear shock. The less front rake will make the bike more stable.

Confirmed! Also use new bolts. BTDT:D

I road a 82 R100RT from 83 to 97 put 97,000 on it and it never missed a beat. The smoke red was cool but it never had reserve power.
In 97 I bought a demo...
I would start with the turn signal relay. Disconnect it and see if the fuse blows. The relay is almost bullet proof, but sometimes they short.
