  1. And brings to avoid

    Rick,
Great comments above on what to use. For things to avoid, top of the list is sand blasting. Even soda blasting is ill advised on any parts that may come in contact with engine internals.

    yes, try test the coils

Coils can be temperature sensitive. You can check the resistance of the coils (of course disconnected). Anton has a good article on his web site:

    Agree only with progressive springs

    Kurt,
I absolutely agree. I wasn't clear. The spring rate changes with compression only with a progressive spring. Thanks for adding the clarification here.

Spacers do affect loading on progressive springs

Maybe my Bachelors of Science in Mechanical engineering may help. For springs, force is proportional to the distance the spring is displaced. The force times a spring constant (K) equals the...

Maybe a leak down and compression test once the heads are back home?

Kurt, May I suggest you do a compression and leak down test once you have the heads back to determine what you might need to do with the cylinders? I rebuilt my 1975 R90S (valve job done...

    loosening those tight bolts

+1 on heat. I like the idea of the heat gun because it's likely that there is BMW thread-lock you are trying to warm up. I also use thread penetrating oil like Liquid Wrench. Obviously, this can...
  10. one more thing to check

Scottie, There are many great comments here and I'm sure you'll find the root cause. One item was to check the drive shaft. On my 1975 R90S, I removed the swing arm from the final drive and...

    R1100RT wiring harness - pic#5

Two wiring harnesses. One, a new-to-me 1996 that was almost a perfect match. Apparently there was a change-over in parts on 1/97. And my repaired 2000 R1100R wiring harness.

    R1100RT wiring harness - Pic#4

I forgot to add a comment about this in the write up. You'll need to slide a cover on the right hand side of the ABS Hyrdo unit up to reveal these three connections.

Pics on replacing R1100RT wiring harness

The job is done and the bike is running beautifully and the ABS is working without any relays to fake out the low voltage test.

    I purchased a new-to-me wiring harness for a 1996 R1100RT and it...

    ABS II bleeding

+1 with Michael. There are no bleed valves on the ABS II Hydro unit as there are with the Integrated ABS (ABS III?) that is on R1150's and newer.
