I'm thinking about spending some time in CO riding next summer (2013) and would like to incorporate this ride into the trip somehow. Has anyone here done this ride before? Comments? Also I'd appreciate any recommendations for a good RV park in the Lakewood CO area.

wow, this is on the tail end of my vacation time.......if I had known it existed earlier I would have planned for it......so maybe I will put it down for next year myself....thanks for posting the link !! looks like a good day of riding to me !!!! gotta love the Rocky Mountain High of Colorado motorcycling !!!!!!
I've done it twice. Nice ride through the national park.
We missed it this year. Actually it is today but we have done it quite often. It is always planned very well and good food at the start and end. A lot of good prizes at the end also. You'll see country west of Denver including Rocky Mtn. Nat. Park and around 10 mountain passes. The ride is 500 miles or so but a few short cuts if that kind of day is a little long. Just don't forget the San Juan Mountains in the southwest of Colorado if you come. Ouray to Durango is and should be on all your bucket lists.
Before you go you have to buy [URL="http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Motorcycling-Colorado-Definitive/dp/1884313922/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313906075&sr=8-1#_"]This Book[/URL], [B]The Complete Guide to Motorcycling Colorado: The Definitive Reference for ALL the Best Roads, Rides, and Tips[/B], written by one of our forum members, Steve Farson.
You won't find a more comprehensive book by someone who has been there, done that, taken the pictures and tells it like it is. Even if you didn't ride a motorcycle, it is full of interesting information about Colorado.
If you want to see some examples, search on the forum for "sfarson" and you will find many ride reports with pics.
I can not say enough about what a wonderful resource this book is for anyone going to Colorado.
And, like a previous poster, the SW corner of Colorado is a riders paradise. We've stayed at the Comfort Inn in Ouray many times and they take good care of us. Lots of riders stay there. If you go, say HI to Betty for me. She and her husband own the place.

That is Telluride in the distance from the top of Black Bear Pass. My ridding buddy and I call that place "Pucker Point" as there is a 90 degree right hand turn right where the road goes out of sight and you have to make it or else. We watched riders get off and walk their bike down past the turn.
Here is another picture of Pucker Point from a different perspective giving a better idea of what it is really like.

Thanks for the tips and for the photos! I can certainly see how "Pucker Point" got its name! I'm not sure which would be more difficult, going up or down!
Actually I just ordered Steve's book yesterday. He really got me hooked with his "Then and Now" series of photos and I've been thinking about a CO ride ever since. I've done a lot of dirt biking around Taylor Park but this will be my first street bike trip in the state. I'm really looking forward to this.
We'll be meandering around CO for maybe two weeks and SW CO is definitely on our list of "must-see" areas. After years of trying various approaches, the wife and I have hit upon what is, for us, the perfect system. We use our truck camper as a home base and from there we spend a few days riding every good road we can find in a particular area, then we pack up and move to another location and repeat. We sort of hopscotch around and cherry pick roads based upon the scenery and number of curves per mile. The twistier the better! When we first started this two-up routine wifey would smack me on the helmet every time we got over about 45 mph but she's become a very good pillion rider and now I can ride almost as fast two-up as I can solo, plus I have great traveling companion and on-board photographer. That said, 500 miles of mountain twisties is probably more than she's willing to endure so she'll get the day off and I'll do the 100,000' ride solo <g>.
Good for you both. It is all about making it work. Sounds like you are both having a great time.
My wife doesn't ride, but doesn't mind if I spend a month on the road alone. She gets the whole bed to herself and I get the pleasure of a Coleman air mattress.

A road many wouldn't think of as fun, by looking at a map, is Colorado 114, Ride # 77 in Steve's book.
What a wonderful motorcycle road.

Just got back, myself on my 2009 K1200LT and a neighbor on his 2002 K1200LT made it up to the Colorado 13th annual 100,000 ft ride. Great ride, beautiful views and great people. Ride at your own pace. Great BBQ dinner and lots of prizes. Played dodge the rain through Albuquerque but other than that Good trip. Will go again.

mgeorge... Glad you had a great time with the 100K! Have participated in it numerous times, and always, numerous great memories are delivered.
My husband and I have done this rider about 4 or 5 times in years past. It is always a lot of fun with lots of pretty area's, ride at you own as fast as you wish, finish with a nice meal. Door prizes and lots of nice people. We will do it again several more times before our ridding day end. The they take you over 10 mountain pass's that total 100,000Ft. We have road it on a 99 RT and on a 99K1200Lt both did great. Lou
