I have been giving much thought to a ride down the Mississippi, it is a senic By way and takes ten days, of course at the end is New Orleans...

that's my planned ride for next summer except starting in Venice LA (where the road ends along the Mississippi) and finishing at Lake Itasca.

that was a quick and dirty.... mainly to concentrate on something near Atlanta. i just plotted the route from Atlanta to Bloomsburg and then started dragging the route to some good roads through the southern Appalachians.

if you know of some good adventures through virginia.... don't be shy!

The central feature of this route is the Williams River Road... a real nice dirt road that starts on the Highland Scenic Byway (WV150)

after the Williams River Road, the route takes you all the way to Marienville, PA via pavement... starting point of the [URL="http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=52929"]GS Gypsy Tour[/URL].

I lived in Gunnison for a couple years. Ever tried the other way from Tin Cup to Buena Vista on Co 267 through the town of St Elmo? not sure I would call it a road though, and don't try it in mud season.

you definitely want to spend some time in the Hells Canyon area.

I rode through on my way to Redmond in 2010, and a significant chunk of the main road through the area (FS39, aka Hells Canyon All-American Road Scenic Byway) was washed off the hill and into the river. [URL="http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/wallowa-whitman/specialplaces/?cid=stelprdb5226777"]This is no doubt fixed by now[/URL].

Hat Point is a great day-trip, but it does feature a campground with an impressive view of the Seven Devils on the Idaho side of the canyon, as well as a view of the Snake River.

Depending on your riding skills, check out the Hess Road, which will take you down to the Snake... and to where you can cross over into Idaho if you want.

West of that area there are several beautiful scenic byways, most all are paved. I rode the [URL="http://www.oregon.com/byways/blue_mountain"]Blue Mountain Scenic Byway[/URL] and found a number of fantastic camping locations along the way.

[URL="http://www.soundrider.com/archive/rides/oregon_backcountry_discovery_route.htm"]The Oregon Back Country Discovery Route[/URL] is something to consider. Advanced skills required. Use a SPOT if you ride alone. I personally wouldn't ride this alone.
