Welcome to the Sebastian Vettel show. That was how it looked right through the race to turn 1 of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Vettel limped back to the pits but his race was done.

With world championships in two divisions and surviving over two decades of racing experience there is much tht Loris Capirossi can teach about racing safely. Safety is a serious issue in all forms of motor racing and in MotoGP in particular. The tragic accident that ended Marco Simoncelli's life was a tragic racing incident. Yet I hope that this was not what has supplied the impetus for Dorna and the FIM to make this move. Simoncelli's accident was clearly a racing incident no matter how tragic the results of the incident. The 2011 season was full of other racing incidents that do raise questions about track safety in so many ways.
In recent days recently crowned MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner has expressed safety concerns about all the new and inexperienced riders and teams the CRT program hopes to bring and fill the grid. Inexperience and disparity in performance levels are safety red flags to him. Capirossi could have a major impact in translating concerns into sensible rules and enforcement that make the sport as safe as possible while promoting competitive racing.
The tracks themselves need to be questioned. Two wheeled road racers practice their sport on tracks increasingly tailored to the needs and safety concerns of their four wheeled counterparts. Some of the things that make tracks safer for them can make tracks more dangerous for motorcycle racers.
Track workers are another thing to look at. At all levels are they getting the training and supervision to qualify them for their jobs? How are corner worker teams put together? What medical staff is available in the case of emergencies? What links with external medical facilities have track owners and race promoters made with off track emergency medical facilities?
Gear continues as a question mark in my mind. With so many riders at this level of sport with access to the worlds best gear why are some of the injuries happening in the first place? What improvements can be made to gear to better protect racers form injury as the result of a racing incident?
What does MotoGP appointing Capirossi to this position mean to you and me? We aren't MotoGP racers and many of us aren't racers at all. I believe more than many realize.
Are you a club racer? Have you done or are you planning a track day? The standards set for tracks and support crews at this level of the sport impact tracks and racing around the world. The same safety requirements of the sanctioning bodies of major events are the same ones that will be protecting you on outings such as these.
The one place I believe in the trickle down effect is in racing gear and practices making it to the street. The gear, machinery and medical practices developed for race day will make their way to the street and help make daily and long distance riders safer too. Will a road riding incident have you low side into a safer barrier or into one designed for cage safety that creates a road hazard for motorcyclists. Race on Sunday sell on Monday may be the mantra of two and four wheeled race machines. It is also the mantra of companies building safety equipment.
The fact that the position has been created and a rider of Capirossi's skill level has been put in it is encouraging. However, in the past season riders have expressed concerns about safety only to back down for fear that the factory teams would punish them for speaking out. Long before Simocelli's death riders were calling for more safety but would not join in a riders group for fear of retribution.
Time will tell if this is a serious attempt at making an inherently dangerous sport safer or just a cynical public relations move. Will Capirossi and his advice be taken seriously or is this just a noble honorarium to add to a storied racing career CV.

Suzuki Motor Corporation has decided to suspend temporarily its participation in FIM Road Racing Grand Prix MotoGP from 2012.
This suspension is to cope with tough circumstances mainly caused by the prolonged recession in developed countries, a historical appreciation of Japanese Yen and repeated natural disasters.
Having an eye to returning to MotoGP in 2014, Suzuki will now focus on developing a competitive new racing machine for that class.
Suzuki will continue motocross racing activity and support of road racing activities using mass-produced motorcycles, by obtaining FIM homologation and co-operation with the supplier of its development racing kit parts.

The starting point for the Concept Strada is the ultra-reliable 650cc engine originally developed by BMW for its ubiquitous F-Series range and in its latest incarnation now used to power the new G 650 GS . This engine has been "breathed on" by specialist Husqvarna engineers and the subsequent power upgrade has resulted in an extremely lively machine that (at less than 170 kg dry) will put a smile back on the face of even the weariest commuter.
BMW-powered, but Husqvarna-driven, the Concept Strada will be the perfect machine for taking on the urban jungle. Its combination of easy handling, punchy engine and user-friendly ergonomics will make it appeal to both young and ‘young at heart’ male and female riders looking for an extra special motorcycle for everyday use. A wide range of accessories to cater for a variety of requirements will also be available when the Concept Strada goes on sale in 2012.

Husqvarna's [i]strategic realignment[/i] shows more and more asphalt in the Italian cousin's by marriage future.
BMW handed Husqvarna a dirty job when they acquired the company from MV Agusta. At least that was the original [i]alignment[/i] described whenever BMW execs where asked about the direction planned for their new motorcycle division, segment or what ever it would grow to be. The strategy seemed to be a simple Venn diagram.
The a large blue circle would represent the BMW Motorrad segment. Within this circle touring, GS and new road racing/sport models would be found. A smaller red circle would represent Husqvarna . Within this circle you would find the lineup of dirt focused bikes that the company had become famous for in the 60's and beyond. The two circles would overlap forming the Venn diagram with dual sport bikes.
The strategy played out with Mothership returning BMW Motorrad to road racing; first with the HP boxers then full on WSBK racing with the S 1000 RR. The Mothership venture into the dirty world of enduros with the G450 was migrated to Italian dirt maestri cousins. For their part the cousins had work to do moving out of the MV house and cleaning up all the various things that would mean. Production had to be separated from MV along with the business paperwork. In turn it these needed to be blending with the Mothership's policies and procedures manual. These only scratches a small part of the surface of what has gone on as Husqvarna Motorcycles became Husqvarna a BMW Group Company.
When the blue and red circles were overlapped in the strategic Venn diagram the resulting color was purple shade. Purple is the color of royalty in many cultures but often in the riding world it is the color of bruising. Misaligned or poorly fitted equipment on rider or bike can lead to nasty purple bruises. Misaligned or poorly fitting Venn diagram business plans can result in a bruised purple tint to the overlap rather than the majestic purple hue intended. Enter the latest revelation in the [i]strategic realignment[/i] of Husqvarna. First with the Nuda and now their Strada Husqvarna has two bikes that grab a R1150R rider like myself and get me excited.
These bikes are not dual sports, cafe bikes or super motos; rather they are factory built hot rods. Take a proven engine. Breath heavily on it. Stick it into a light weight good handling chassis. Give it an upright seating position and wide handle bars to hold on to. Twist your wrist and the hot rod engine and chassis let you go canyon carving with you cafe racer buddies. The wide handle bars and upright seating position will let you stand on the pegs and let you go a long way down that non-paved path your GS friends say they ride. Ride one of these and in those settings you may not always be in the lead but I suspect you will not have trouble keeping up. Where you will blow them away is in the press release's [i]urban jungle[/i]. The bikes structural components make the Nuda and Strada rider tools intended for carving your way through city traffic, parkways and suburban twisting roads and streets with alacrity. In these settings your cafe buddies complain about sore wrists due to no high speed air dam effect to help deal with their low slung clip-ons and your GS buddies have sore muscles wrestling their Panzer Bikes around. My guess is the main complaint Nuda and now Strada riders, like their Roadster counterparts, will have is sore facial muscles from grinning so much. The big difference is the Husqvarna rider may get there faster than the Roadster gang.
I expect the styling will get dinged by many. Get a grip. These are bikes that are styled for the tastes of a European market not Fly-Over-Land or our Left/Right coast neighbor's tastes. These are naked bikes. Don't like the factory styling? Change it. Naked bikes are not some distant factory designer's dictate but bare canvases to be styled the way you want. Similarly keep the whining down about wanting a true GS or touring version. If you want them; build them yourself. These are Italian motorrad hot rod bikes Roadster riders could appreciate. There may be derivations with some of the Nuda and Strada DNA in your future.
Time will tell how this [i]strategic realignment[/i] is going to play out for both Husqvarna and BMW. Showroom sales will tell if these bikes that inhabit the Venn diagram overlap of the Mothership's Motorrad Segment are royal purple or not. For now I like the hue very much. I just wish the color in my wallet was something more majestic than the deeply bruised color it currently is.
