Alonso would seem to be in the catbird seat.
Team orders are in place for all teams; win!
Going into this season I picked Vettel to win the Driver Championship calling him a dark horse. He continues to be even though I pick him to win this race. Alonso is in that dubious position of balancing caution and charge. For him the race and the championship will not be won or lost in turn one, but they could be lost there. If all make it through we may not know until the final points paying position has passed the checkered flag.
I’ll post a full Bench Racing and Morning Reads this evening.

F1 Update: Race Notes
The midfield drivers could play a very important role today.
First lap and the Safety Car Deployed (SCD) sign goes up.
Schumacher spins after making contact with Rosberg and catches up Luzzi in the process. Several drivers dive into the pits, but non of the leaders do.
Hamilton is on the radio with his pit to see if his front wing is alright.
Lots of debris on the track.
Rosberg Petrov Alguersuari Di Grassi Senna and Klien have made stops and taken on hards. They could go the distance now with out another stop. This could mean midfield traffic could play a role when the leaders decide to pit. In addition to those who have stopped note that Kubica started the race on the hards while everyone else started on softs.
Lap 6 of 55
The race goes green. Vettel gets a jump on the start leaving Hamilton and others to catch up.
At this point the top 10: Vettel, Hamilton, Button, Alonso, Webber, Massa, Barrichello, Kobayahsi, Kubica and Sutil
Lap 7 of 55
Alonso Webber and Massa are stacked up with only a second and a half covering them. Webber appears to be faster than Alonso but can not get buy while at the same time he must hold off Massa if either he or Vettel hope to take the title.
Lap 8 of 55
In front Vettel has opened a 2.0 second gap over Hamilton. He needs to build this for pit stop comfort.
Webber skims the wall but is alright.
Lap 11
Webber pits! In and out. This takes him out of the current cycle with Alonso. Now he races the clock to see if he can close the gap for the pass when the Spaniard pits. The challenge now is not only the clock but where he returned into the race, P16. There are a bunch of midfield cars he must deal with without the aid of the blue flag.
Ferrari had looked like they were going to pit, did they psyc Red Bull? Only their hair dresser knows for sure and she wonÔÇÖt return my phone calls.
Lap 14
Massa pits and returns in P16 (Webber is up to P14)
Lap 15
Alonso Pits from P 4
Webber turns in a new fast lap Where will Alonso cycle back into the race?
Lap 16 of 55
Alonso is in P12 2.3 seconds ahead of Webber who is now up to P13. Ahead of them Rosberg and Petrov in P9 and 11 respectively, have made stops are on hard tires and must be past by Alonso and Webber if either wants the championship.
Lap 19 of 55
Barrichello pits from P6 he returns in P 16. Alonso and Webber move up one position.
Lap 20 of 55
Up front Hamilton appears to be pacing with Vettel. Their gap varies between 1.9 and 2.1 seconds but not more. Button is in P3 5.1 seconds behind the race leader.
P4-10: Kobyayashi Kubica Sutil Buemi Rosberg Hulkenberg Petrov
Lap 21 of 55
Alonso is fighting with Petrov for P10. Webber is closing in on both. Normally this slows drivers down but they are catching up with Hulkendberg P9 in the process. Petrov must be passed if he is to win the championship. The Hulk has not pitted so will be passed for position when he does.
Lap 24
Hamilton pits
Vettel pits before he crosses the line for lap 25
Both are out cleanly.
Hamilton returns in P5
Vettel returns in P2 behind Button and ahead of Kubica and Kobayashi non of which of pitted.
Lap 25 of 55
Webber runs wide but no problem. Preasuer?
Lap 26 of 55
Vettel sets new fast lap. He is sown 15.7 seconds behind Button so he has a clear track. He needs to set some fast laps to cycle Button as far behind him as he can.
Lap 27 of 55
Hamilton has passed Kobayashi for P4. Kubica is next perhaps. Kubica and Button have not made stops yet so there is no immediate urgency to risk all for the pass.
Lap 28 of 55
At the half way point Vettel has closed the gap with Button to 12.7 seconds. If things ended as they now stand he would be champion. How will the next 27 laps play out?
Lap 30 of 55
P8-12: Rosberg Hulknberg Petrov Alonso Webber of these only the Hulk has not pitted.
Lap 31 of 55
Vettel goes purple again closing the gap to 11.2 seconds.
Button and Kubica could pit and cycle back in ahead of Rosberg making more imperative that Alonso make a move if he wants to take the title.
Lap 34 of 55
Kobayashi pits and falls to 16 moving Alonso into P10 the last points paying position. All well and good but he has not been able to do anything with Petrov yet though he is right on his tail. Petrov may be hard but Rosberg is in a wide body jet in P7 that has already pitted.
Lap 36 of 55
The Hulk pits and Alonso and Webber move up one more slot.
Lap 37 of 55
Buemi pits moving the train up one more.
ButtonÔÇÖs gap to Rosberg is 35.1 seconds. He could pit and get out ahead of the German. Alonso must move up if he wants the title.
Lap 39 of 55
The championship is on the line as Button pits. Where he comes out could decide the title. The gap to Rosberg was 33.7 seconds with Alonso 36.6 when he pitted.
Button is out cleanly and emerges in P4
Kubica and Sutil still must pit. Even if the train were to cycle past them that would leave Alonso in P6.
Lap 40 of 55
Vettel is in the lead with a 12.1 second lead over Kubica. This is cold comfort given his history this year having lead many races only to suffer engine failure. Will he hold the title as briefly as Massa did two years ago?
Lap 42 of 55
Vettel is having problemswith his radio. The team will have to communicate using the pit board and signals.
Button sets a new fast lap.
Ferrari continues to urge Alonso to make the pass but as yet he can not find a way around PetrovÔÇÖs Renault. !@# !@#$ mid filders making for an exciting race.
:evil
The gap to between Rosberg and Kubica is about 26 seconds.
Lap 46 of 55
Kubica pits. The championship is in the Renault pit crewÔÇÖs hands.
He is out cleanly but where on the grid?
Behind Rosberg but ahead of Petrov/Alonso and Weber.
Lap 47 of 55
Sutil pits. This could well be the final sort of the top ten and the DriverÔÇÖs Championship.
Lap 48 the top ten are shown as
Vettel
Hamilton
Button
Rosberg
Kubica
Petrov
Alonso
Webber
Alguersuari
Massa
Lap 49
It is down to a fight for position. Vettel holds a 9.9 second gap over Hamilton, while Petrov a 0.6 second gap over Alonso.
Petrov is on thing but he has 5 laps to get past Kubica and Rosberg also to take P4 if he wants to win the title.
Lap 50
With no radio we donÔÇÖt know what Vettel is saying to himself alone in the cockpit of his Red Bull.
Lap 53 of 55
Vettel has a clear track and everything to worry about for 3 more minutes.
Lap 54 of 55
Trulli loses some body work and pits.
Could a puncture happen to spoil the race for Vettel? :evil
Lap 55
Vettel wins the race and the 2010 DriverÔÇÖs Championship to go along with the Constructor Championship he and teammate Mark Webber already secured.
Vettel
Hamilton
Button
Rosberg
Kubica
Petrov
Alonso
Webber
Alguersuari
Massa
My alarm just went off and I must be off. More this PM.

Mika,
Love the reads, and that bike candy cafe racer is stunning.
As an FYI, the Happy Birthday link worked weeks ago, but it no longer take me to the correct page. Is it me, or the link? If the latter, kindly fix the problem.
And, thanks for all you do. These Reads are so great!

Jordan, thank you for the heads up about the birthday link. I have been lazy lately and have not checked it when I preview the post. I probably nicked the template I have for it when I updated it one day.
The bike is really something isn’t it. It is a R69S breathed on by the people at Ritmo Sereno Euro Motorcycle Shop in Japan. They do some incredible work. I have included Bike Candy from this shop several times. Siroh Nakajim is the CEO and I follow his blog. My computer is not set up to deal with Japanese or translations but the blog is full of excellent photographs that I can sit and study for much longer than I should. Their site is fun to explore, even with language difficulties so follow the links and explore. There are some English headers. Check out the Used Bike header. They give you a profile shot of the bikes listed. Click on the model for the pictured and more pictures will be revealed.
Ian, Vince has asked permission to do what you suggested a couple of times. I gave it. When or if that link happens is, as is often said, “above my pay grade”
:ha
I will look into the tractor question. It slipped past me when I viewed the video the first time. I was multi-screwingup err tasking at the time. If or when I find some more information I will post it.
I am always open to questions and suggestions for searches or topics any of you would be interested in.
Thank you for the comments. :blush

The BBC does not use the points standings to make its rankings and in the process it comes up with interesting arguments to support their rankings.
autosport.com: Todt ÔÇô New tracks must create passing
This sounds expensive and I fear will result in more boring races than F1 fans have endured in the past. The solution to the passing problem (if in deed it really does exist) may be as simple as eliminating the blue flag passes for the first time you put a driver down a lap.
The teams in front are the fast ones with all the development money. Mid pack and back are the slow poor guys and they seemed to pass each other on a regular basis this season. The guys up front need clear air and a straight away to pull off a pass or the help of a blue flag.
Taking away the blue flag will slow the leaders down once they come up on back marker traffic. If they have to pass back markers without the help of the blue flag their chassis designers will figure out a way to do it. There is no incentive for them to do it under the current rules.
Drivers qualify with flying laps that they and the teams carefully stagger to avoid traffic. The emphasis is on handling and speed not passing ability. In the race the hope is to break away from the field and have open track. This is done two ways. Be in front in the beginning of the race and run for day light. Develop a pit stop strategy that moves your car into a open slot on the track and do your passing when the other guy is sitting still in the pit getting fresh rubber. Either way if you are in the lead you will never be appreciably slowed down by a back marker because the blue flag comes out and they must yield the track line to you. That is not racing or passing it is traffic control.
Take away the blue flag and the fast rich guys in front will design cars that can pass and the slow guys will copy them.
It is so simple. If Mr. Todt would only stop by the Official Fly-Over-Land coffee shop we could explain it to him. Better yet invite us over to Paris for coffee and send his jet to pick us up. I understand the City of Lights is beautiful this time of year.

FWIW
Dear Santa,
I am not writing for myself, or even this year. I know I have been a bad boy this year and fully expect a lump of coal in my stocking. (Actually if it is low sulfur coal I could use it to help with heating. Oops I may have just blown that too!). I am getting a request in for people at BMW Motorrad Motorsport and BMW racing fans for 2012.
There have been all sorts of rumors lately that BMW will be joining MotoGP in 2012. That is the year MotoGP goes to the liter bike formula. I am really excited about that and I hope that BMW and you make that happen because racing fans will really be happy to find that under the tree. But that is not why I am writing, although I really do hope you and BMW will give us a present of a MotoGP team ( but I guess I already said that ÔÇô sorry Santa), rather I am writing to ask for something racing but a bit smaller. I wonder if you could find a way to give us a BMW Moto3 bike along with the MotoGP bike? I know this may sound greedy but if you think about it Santa it makes a certain amount of sense, would be really cool and could help BMW pay for all this racing in the long run.
Santa I know youÔÇÖre in to reindeer racing and probably snowmobiles (or at the North Pole do you call them snow machines?) so let me explain this Moto__ stuff a little bit.
The FIM makes up the rules for motorcycle racing classes. It has three prototype series. There is MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3.
The biggest is MotoGP. It has the biggest engines. In 2012 they will be 1000cc with a maximum of an 81mm bore (just like the bore on the S1000RR). Then they take these engines and put them into prototype frames and race them on race tracks.
The next class is Moto2. The simplest way for me to explain this to you Santa is for you to think of it as a sleigh builders racing class that all use clones of the same reindeer team. Everyone racing in the class uses a prototype frame. They design it or in some cases buy it but it is not a street bike frame. Everyone has to use the same engine. The elves over at Honda make them right now. I kind of think of it as a master class for frame and suspension designers.
In 2012 the FIM is going to have Moto3. This is really cool Santa. Think of having a really good sleigh designer build you a sleigh to be pulled by one reindeer to go racing with. That is sort of what Moto3 is.
Moto3 is a prototype class built around a 250cc four stroke engine with a maximum bore of 81mm.
MOTO3 REGULATIONS
Engine
4-stroke reciprocating piston engines only.
Engine capacity: maximum 250cc.
Single cylinder only.
Maximum bore size: 81mm. No oval pistons.
Engines must be normally aspirated. No turbo-charging, no super-charging.
Crankshaft speed limited to maximum: 14,000 rpm.*
Maximum of 1 ignition driver.*
Maximum of 4 valves.
Pneumatic and/or hydraulic valve systems are not permitted.
Valves timing system drive must be by chain.
Variable valve timing and/or variable valve opening systems are not permitted.
Engine Supply
The engine is defined as the complete engine including intake system (throttle body, injectors), and one complete transmission.
The maximum price of the engine must not exceed 12,000 Euro. No optional parts or service contracts may be used to circumvent this price limit.
Each engine manufacturer must undertake to supply sufficient engines and spare parts to supply minimum 15 riders per season, if requested.
Each engine manufacturer must submit a spare parts price and lead-time list for the season for approval by the Organiser, and may not charge more than these published prices. Approval is based on the prices and lead-times being in line with current market norms for these parts and technologies.
In the event of engine updates or upgraded parts being developed, these must be made available to all customers at the same time, and respecting the price limits described above.

You can see some of the ties to MotoGP canÔÇÖt you Santa? The reason I am asking for this bike early is, well, it may not be as simple as slicing one cylinder off the MotoGP bike and building a 250cc engine with an 81mm bore.
Many of the kids that know about these kinds of toys say you may want to make the bore a little smaller and the stroke a little longer so the engine makes a bit more torque. (The torque weÔÇÖre talking about here is not the torque like my mom and dad getting torqued off when I hid under the dining room table waiting for you and ate the cookies and drank the eggnog they left for you. Bye the way Santa you should thank me for that. The eggnog tasted strange and made me feel funny. I donÔÇÖt think you would have liked it no matter what my dad said. No this is the torque that provides the pulling power to the bike. Think of it as reindeer grunt power to get the sleigh moving.) There may be a difference in bore and stroke required between the two engines but the smaller engine could still be a great design testing laboratory and could end up being a building block for other sized street engines for BMW Motorrad to sell and help pay for the racing toys.
Santa the talk on the playground is the Honda Yamaha Suzuki and Kawasaki families are going to get these kinds of bikes for their kids. The Ducati family already races MotoGP bikes and has a long history of building two wheeled toys with single cylinder engines. Maybe they will be doing it again. The Aprilia family has been racing for a long time. There is talk that they will join MotoGP in 2012. Maybe they will have a Moto3 too.
I know IÔÇÖm not supposed to want a toy just because all the cool kids or all the other kids have one but Santa please. Moto3 is a really exciting new racing class. It has the potential of generating engines and bikes that will get factories and people interested in entry level bikes that are fun and sporting. If you talk with the Gnomes at BMW see if you can convince them of this. They could sell a bunch of 250cc and 500cc sport bikes in the new markets they are going into. I would even like to have a 250cc BMW sport bike to play with on the double letter roads in Wisconsin. (I promise I wonÔÇÖt speed Santa I promise.)
Anyway thank you for reading my letter Santa. I will write you again about this.
I hope you will like the cookies we make for you this year. I have already been testing eggnogs and I will make certain that you get some this time.
Thank you Santa,
Mika

Part 1 of this story focused on WebBikeWorldÔÇÖs tour of the Nolan Helmet factory. In part two they take a long detailed look at the two standards and the miss/information that exists about them. Both standards aim to protect riders and are very rigorous but make some fundamentally different assumptions in doing that. Experts donÔÇÖt agree on which is better. Riders are left with the standard adopted by their country. Understanding them and where they have taken helmet safety to at this point is important in order to set the goals for future developments.

In 1989 the first of these Superside inspired street going rigs was built. The traditional three wheeler is a two wheeler with a side car attached. The Domani takes a different approach using an tubular frame that integrates the side car into its structure. The first models used the K100 engine and final drive Power currently is supplied by a K 1200 engine and drive train. If the frame and bodywork are future oriented the front suspension adds more in that direction. The hub center steering seems much more natural in this setting than in some of the two wheeled applications it has been found. Over 100 units have been built and sold during this time.

Back to two wheels and filed with the disclaimer ÔÇ£DonÔÇÖt try this at home this is film of a professional rider on a closed trackÔÇØ Motoblog.it provides the link to video shot at the Alex Barros Riding School of its name sake drifting a S1000RR.

If that is not enough they then compared it to video from 2009 with Marco Melandri doing some drifting at Phillip Island.

Mac Motorcycles has been a fun story to follow in the news and on their blog The Chin Wag. The opening story along with some exploration of the Mac Motorcycles site go a long way in explaining why. The story of a small concept building overcoming the obstacles presented by development and the marketplace are always a fun read for me. What is even more fun is to imagine what if.
What if Santa and BMW deliver on a childish Christmas dream and build a 250cc engine for Moto3. It could provide the basis for a variety of new sporting singles that deliver on a dream similar to that of Mac Motorcycles. These would be bikes that deliver a balance of engine frame and suspension that calls on the rider to be in command, not the manufacturerÔÇÖs engineers or programmers, to engage and test the riderÔÇÖs skills working with the bike between their legs to draw out its performance.

R26
It is not that there is not a history of such bikes in the BMW line to build upon with a modern sporting 250cc single or larger.
