I guess all of us realize how they have proliferated in the last decade or two, and how few defenses we have against them as riders. Should preface this story by telling you I live out in the country where in the fall I'm sure a few deer get shot by legal hunters. But not nearly enough. All of us have problems with deer eating our gardens. So I'm sitting in my living room reading a book and glance out the window. Two deer are in the neighbors pasture grazing on the grass - hardly exciting. Next time I look up from the book there are six deer and one is grazing on my neighbors raspberry patch. I figure I have a neighborly duty to scare them off.

Get the old single barrel 12 gauge out of the gun case and grab a couple 1 ounce loads with number 9 pellets. (The gun is old, rusted inside and out, so I don't worry about cleaning it. The light hand loads are for my safety and the pellets very small so they will just sting an animal like a deer - though fine for dispatching magpies.)

I walk out the basement door and fire a shot over their heads. (If you are not familiar with the sound of a shotgun, suffice it to say I first put in earplugs.) That shot gets their attention. They all look at me and hold their positions. Then the closest deer walks toward me, and I'm glad there is a barbed wire fence between us. He is maybe 25 yards from me and I wait until he has lost interest in me and turned away before I shoot him in the flank. THAT deer did bound away. The rest left very slowly. I have no doubt they will be back to both our gardens.

The moral of this story? I think deer have changed. The sight of a person should have sent those deer running. CERTAINLY the sound of a 12 gauge shotgun should have! I believe deer are becoming more like raccoons - happy to live in close proximity to people and eat what those people will provide with no fear.

A couple years ago I rode my bike to a friend's rented duplex in Cranbrook, B.C. (a small city) and saw four deer lying down on the small lawn. My first thought as I pulled in was WHO THE HELL WOULD PUT OUT THOSE TAXIDERMY ANIMALS HERE! Then I saw an ear twitch. Later that year there were deer attacks on a woman walking a small dog IN THAT CITY.

Deer have become a serious problem across all of North America and I don't have any great solutions. I hope the mod's don't delete this thread because of the "gun component" in the post. I'm hoping to hear better ideas from you if this post is permitted.

While I had the Tupperware off today, I got to thinking about the stock speakers and if louder aftermarket speakers were available. So, I figured where else better to start than by asking the Beemer Jedi masters!

Thanks in advance for your time and advice.

Hi,
I am looking for a bike to work on and ride - not a full blown restoration, just enough to be clean, reliable and wrench able. My skills are mediocre - confident in earlier rebuilds of dirt bikes, a couple of marine outboards and one old jeep motor/suspension.

I have the chance to pick up a R75/5 in very nice shape physically but doesn't run after a long time in storage. Similar opportunity with a R90/6. Thinking I'd tear them down pretty far to learn, replace various seals and gaskets, cables, rebuild carbs, etc.

From a parts availability and complexity perspective does anyone have a strong opinion of one over the other?

Thanks

Hey all,

So once again still finding little joys of problems with my /5. Mechanically everything was running great until yesterday morning. As I was leaving for work I noticed that when in the friction zone I was experiencing a loud squeal type noise. I stopped for a second and tried a few more times and the sound went away. I decided I would chance it to work and ended up taking surface roads. When I got home later that evening I went to put the bike into neutral from first and noticed that the shift lever seemed to be stuck.

I move forward a few inches and tried again (thinking maybe it just got stopped in an odd position) but still no dice. I ended up friction-zone walking it into the garage and tried once more and finally got it to go into neutral, but it did not feel quite right.

So this morning I decided to try another quick test ride and see if I felt any problems. Low and behold I hear the same squeal noise and shifting felt very wierd. I had movement and could ride but shifting didnt feel smooth or right from neutral -> first -> second gear.

Is my transmission going south?

The bike has 79k on it. I am the fourth owner of the bike and at least all the history I have on it. It looks like the transmission was "inspected" by a shop back in the 90s but there isnt much documentation on exactly what went on. No data on if the splines were ever lubed/etc.

I have two K bikes- an 88 K100RS, and an 02 K1200 RS.
Both have similar mileage- just over 50K. Last year, My K100 was found to have worn out completely its rear brake rotor. Now, my K12 is having ITS rear brake rotor replaced. It seems ludicrous to me that the rotors have worn to the point of having to be replaced after +/- 50K miles...

Am I delusional?
Naive?
Is this planned obsolescence?
Or cheap product placement to insure revenue for dealerships?
If the front is where all the braking power is, am I over using my rear brakes, if the rotors are wearing out?

Of course, my own opinions on my riding techniques, skills, etc. may not match realities but I don't feel like I spend too much time on my brakes, or that I brake too much, etc.

What does everyone's experience tell them about brakes & rotors?

I have posted on this bike before. My new to me R1100R starts fine, runs a minute to 4 minutes then cr@ps out, by that I mean it goes into a mode where it emits smoke, soots the plugs, drops out ignition completely, then surges forward when throttle is opened. It may stop this and run good for 10 minutes then it returns, it is not rideable. The change in ride-ability is like a switch being thrown.
I have had suggestions: Oil temp sensor failure (no- Thanks rxcrider for the loaner), sync (no -spot on), valve adj (no -spot on), not fuel filter (replaced), not bad gas (removed and rinsed out), not hoses, not injectors, not hall sensors, not timing, not wiring (visual inspection and wiggle test), probably not wiring connectors (unplugged and replugged), new spark plugs, clean air filter and not anything two separately working former BMW master techs can find. BTW both have donated their time as they can't get it going, but I am gifting them a reward for effort.
Tuesday it goes into the local BMW dealer. The service manager asked if I had done a leak down test! I doubt this is the reason as when it runs it is strong, smooth, and accelerates like a gazelle in front of a lion. I guess I have to let them do one at $85/hr. I hope their diagnostic machine can find the problem.
Untested is the Engine Management Unit and the Throttle Position Sensor. I have both coming via ebay ($69 and $40- wow so cheap!) as the combined price new is $1600 (MaxBMW fiche). It looks like the EMU is an easy swop out, but the TPS would need to be set with the diagnostic machine and it will be in the shop anyway.
Could the Evaporative Emissions canister be the cause of this? I have read the Canisterectomy postings on .ADV forums and I am considering removal as I am desperate. I'll probably wait until the dealer has a go.
The bike is at one of the former tech's shop now. I haven't checked: grounding suggestion. It only has 6K on it and nothing outside of the bike looks even remotely warn, no chafed wires, no scuffs, no corrosion, it seems perfect.
I even called the 2nd owner and introduced myself to ask about its rid-ability in the past (it got a great review).
Anyone been through anything like this? What does the dealer's diagnostic machine tell? What am I missing here?
