I have posted on this bike before. My new to me R1100R starts fine, runs a minute to 4 minutes then cr@ps out, by that I mean it goes into a mode where it emits smoke, soots the plugs, drops out ignition completely, then surges forward when throttle is opened. It may stop this and run good for 10 minutes then it returns, it is not rideable. The change in ride-ability is like a switch being thrown.
I have had suggestions: Oil temp sensor failure (no- Thanks rxcrider for the loaner), sync (no -spot on), valve adj (no -spot on), not fuel filter (replaced), not bad gas (removed and rinsed out), not hoses, not injectors, not hall sensors, not timing, not wiring (visual inspection and wiggle test), probably not wiring connectors (unplugged and replugged), new spark plugs, clean air filter and not anything two separately working former BMW master techs can find. BTW both have donated their time as they can't get it going, but I am gifting them a reward for effort.
Tuesday it goes into the local BMW dealer. The service manager asked if I had done a leak down test! I doubt this is the reason as when it runs it is strong, smooth, and accelerates like a gazelle in front of a lion. I guess I have to let them do one at $85/hr. I hope their diagnostic machine can find the problem.
Untested is the Engine Management Unit and the Throttle Position Sensor. I have both coming via ebay ($69 and $40- wow so cheap!) as the combined price new is $1600 (MaxBMW fiche). It looks like the EMU is an easy swop out, but the TPS would need to be set with the diagnostic machine and it will be in the shop anyway.
Could the Evaporative Emissions canister be the cause of this? I have read the Canisterectomy postings on .ADV forums and I am considering removal as I am desperate. I'll probably wait until the dealer has a go.
The bike is at one of the former tech's shop now. I haven't checked: grounding suggestion. It only has 6K on it and nothing outside of the bike looks even remotely warn, no chafed wires, no scuffs, no corrosion, it seems perfect.
I even called the 2nd owner and introduced myself to ask about its rid-ability in the past (it got a great review).
Anyone been through anything like this? What does the dealer's diagnostic machine tell? What am I missing here?
Ralph

Hi group, I have a 1996 R1100rt with 102,000 km. Runs and handles great.
Yesterday while I was poking around the telelever arm greasing the front lower shock connection, I noticed that I had a little side to side play at the A- arm where it connects to the engine. (Approx. 1 mm) The front ball bearing is solid, I replaced it last year.
I don't feel anything negative on the road as related to noise or handling, going straight or in corners or over bumps but I suspect that there should not be any play in the system.
My local dealer has the parts but can't do the work for a month or so. my questions; is any play acceptable? does the arm have to be removed to remove the bearings? do the new bearings have to be pressed in?
Thank you

My 1999 R1100R now has 86k + on the clock. Last weekend (actually 4 total days) I rode to Darlington, SC for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race and then to my Mom's north of Atlanta for Mothers Day, what a good son I am :dance .

I rode 1,839 miles and used a total of 175 cc of oil. The bike ran outstanding! Almost every inch highway miles at an indicated 80 to 85 mph which works out to approximately 75 miles per hour. The ride home I clocked almost 725 miles in a 12 hour period.

And, because the question will probably be asked, I am using Mobil 1 V-Twin 20/50 Synthetic as my choice of lubricant. This is a recent change for me as I have only been a Mobil 1 fan for maybe 5k miles at this point. Prior to that I was using good ol' Castrol 20/50 petroleum. There is a noticeable difference in mechanical noise with the Mobil 1 and I am extremely pleased so far.

Please no oil wars... let's discuss proven oil consumption numbers for given miles driven might be interesting. Maybe that's already been done?

I have been quite happy with the performance of the 1994 models and would love to hear more about this aftermarket performance add-on. I got this information;
http://dobeckperformance.com/TFI/TFItechnology.asp
and am still in the dark about whether this is really needed or even beneficial. I have not yet had time for a long ride as I am getting the bike ready. It needed a bit of tlc and I will be ready to ride tomorrow after the brake system flush.
What I have noticed thus far in my short rides is that it seems tight, idles low and requires the throttle advance to start. I will check the valves and TB sync also. Comments will be appreciated.

I've recently moved and I'm pained to have to trailer my RT to my new home/location. I have been trying all day to find a thread/device that was posted some time ago showing a system to secure the wheel(s) of the bike. It is a strap that extends left and right of the wheel with a heavy net looking thing wrapped around the top of the tire. Rather than messing with the suspension/springs, this secures the wheels down to the bed of the trailer. They were pricey but very effective. Please help, anyone know what I'm referring to?

I know I should just run it to the dealer for diagnosis, but my nearest one isn't very "near". And I'm wondering if I'm going to damage it by driving it there?
