I have already re-coded several used top cases so that I can use my own key in a lock originally coded for the previous owner's key. In each instance I had the PO's key, which I used to pull the cylinder from the lock assy. Here's my question: must I use the PO's key, or instead will my own key work to pull the cylinder from the lock? (It's just this cylinder removal step I'm unclear about).

I'm thinking about buying some backup side cases and will want them to function with my present key.

Short of purchasing a new cylinder I think you're stuck with having to use the PO's key since it needs to be unlocked for removal. Even with a new one I think you will still need the orginal key. And you really do not want to take the cases apart - DAMHIK
