I was reading the post about the recommended procedure to change head lamps and was curious to know.

How many miles may I expect to get out of the OEM lamps?

Thanks in advance for any help.:D

I don't know if you're going to get a stock answer for miles that a headlamp will go. I have read posts were guys are losing the headlight after several thousand miles, others seem to go on forever. Heck, our car goes through headlights every 6 months or so, my truck on the other hand is 7 years old, nearly 100K on it and has all original light bulbs. Just so I dont have to worry as much about the bulbs and so I can see better, I changed both for HID bulbs. WOW, much better!!

If I get eight to ten thousand miles out of a low-beam bulb I consider myself lucky.

I have yet to replace the high-beam bulb -- possibly because I rarely use my high-beams. I try to stay off the roads after dark when possible -- too many feral hogs, deer, cattle, possums, armadillos, and other critters on our rural roads at night.

In western rural Indiana it seems we have more deer than rabbits. So I avoid riding after dark also. I sometimes kinda feel like the late Charelton Heston in the movie the Omega Man.
I have about 13k on my RT. I will check out the HID lamps.

Thanks

4 of us bought R1200GS's at the same time, and mostly rode together - the OEM bulbs all failed around 14,000 miles

Then we switched to PIAA bulbs - they seem to fail after about 6,000 miles

I replaced my OEM low-beam bulbs at around 25K miles. I just replaced my high beam bulb at 35K miles. (R1200RT)

My OEM bulb has lasted 33k miles. I carry an extra with me , but I don't know when I'll use it.

The new GSA1200 bulbs are very easily accessed, do not know about other models. My low beam went around 20000 miles and thats it so far. The high beam is original at 27000 now. I use both a lot and off road riding too, so they get some abuse. Its been said, a clean "skinfree" install is absolute, to keep your body oil from contaminating the glass on the bulb. This will shorten bulb life, if you fingerprint the bulb! I guess its so and have always used alcohol to clean my presense(or anyone elses) from the bulbs, as I install them. Randy

Mine have lasted on average 10,000 miles before replacement was needed.

On my 06 RT I got 52K out of the left low beam and just replaced the right one at just under 60K. We have fairly good road surfaces here in AZ....

I might add, I buy my replacement H7 bulbs from the Mercedes dealer, they are oem quality and are half the price of Checker's or Wal-mart, right around $8.00 each.

For my low beam I've gotten around 13,000 to 20,000 miles out of the stocker or the standard Sylvania H7. The brighter Sylvanias (Silverstar and Cool Blue) last 6,000 miles and less. For my purposes, the 12GS's stock lighting is plenty bright with standard bulbs, so I'd rather have longevity. Having said that, about three months and 4,000 miles ago I installed an Osram 65w bulb available at Cyclenutz.com (LINK (http://www.cyclenutz.com/products/auxiliary_lighting/replacement_bulbs/osram_sylvania_hyper_65w_h7_bulb.html)). Osram took an H9 bulb and put it in an H7 base. I did it on the advice of a friend and so far, so good. Its definitely brighter than stock, but I'm eager to see if it lasts.

My stock high beam lasted for 39,000 miles. I replaced it with a standard Sylvania H7 and 12,000 miles later its doing fine.

I have 17,000 miles on my 1200gs and have replaced low bulb twice. First time with a more expensive silverstone, lasted one year about 6,000 miles now with a cheepy and seems almost as good. At least you can get them anywhere. I don't think price of the bulb has anything to do with longetivity.

HID Xenon light kits (http://www.alpha-bid.com/product196.html) don't have filaments and should last a lot longer than a regular bulb.

Replaced my low beams at around 20K. Have not yet replaced the high beam (don't ride at night due to all the above). Next time I will try removing the skin to see if that is easier (because to not do so you must remove large amounts of your own skin!):laugh
