View Full Version : Positive battery terminal fastener?

Hello,

I spent the day wiring my bike for aux lights, and came to a head-scratcher...

I peered under the red rubber cap on my battery for the first time, and instead of any normal fastener, found what looks like a tall lead mushroom.

For once, I thought I'd try asking before I forced the issue; how do you remove the battery positive cable?

Cheers, Tom

on my RT it is a 10mm sloted bolt head.

Can you post a picture to what you are referring?

There is a really small torx inside that mushroom lug.

I replaced it with a standard nut/bolt on my GS.

Tom - it does look like torx head maybe a T20 or 25

Thanks Gerald and Semper Fi,

It looks like the dealer who prepped the bike stripped the torx head, if that's what it was. I'll have to just grip it with pliers or vise-grips (but not while the battery is grounded!)

The parts diagram is odd; my bike came with an AGM battery without those vertical posts that take horizontal bolts. That looks like the battery on my old K75S. Mine doesn't seem to accept the plastic terminal cover "flaps" either.

Thanks for the help.

Wont hold it against ya Tom :usa :thumb

If it is too stripped - you may want to notch a slot in the bolt head and use a BFS to remove.

If it's bunged up anyway you will need to replace.

You bring up a good point on grounding - you may want to cover up the vise grip or tool you will be using to eliminate any accidental grounding to the frame as you make the swing with the tool.

I got the fiche from Max's website - I just selected a generic RT - you can also enter your VIN for more specific information.

Good luck with the extraction.
