Recently bought a new RT 15 years after selling my R100RS. Looking for advice on appropriate engine RPM for maintaining a steady crusing speed. This bike is so different from my old ride. It seems like 4th through 6th gear are virtually uneeded. Is cruising in the 2500 RPM range appropriate or am I lugging the engine?

I have an 05 and try to keep it above 3k RPM and in the 4 range if possible. I find that if I drop below 3k the bike runs poorly. Oh and I am not sure which year your RT is but 6th on mine is basically a interstate gear. :type

After about 16,000 miles, my '06RT seems happiest at 3,300~4,500 in 5th & 6th and about 2,500~3,300 in 3rd & 4th.

Average mpg of 50+ seems to confirm this.

My '07 has about 3000 miles on it now and seems to be perfectly happy in 6th down to about 2400 rpm, as long as the road is fairly level. If the cruise is set and anything more than a slight up grade presents itself, she'll tell me to down-shift. The fuel economy in 6th at 50 mph is solidly above 50 (53-55). Bottom speed in 4th is 35 mph, where it gets low 60s for mileage! It runs so sweet that I can't stop ridin' long enough to wash it!

Between 3000-4500 in 3rd, 4th, 5th. Sixth gear is Interstate or 70 mph or above.
Anything below 3000 rpm in 3rd, 4th, 5th gear it starts lugging.

My R12RT spends the majority of it's life between 3000rpm and 4000rpm... she likes it best there... unless I'm slamming the needle to 7500... she likes it there too!

I'll stay between 3k and 5k in the twisties for a general rule. Sometimes I'll get too lazy to downshift and it'll drop into the low 2ks. It'll still pull fine but it just doesn't like it as much.

I stay between 2500 and 7500. That is the sweet spot.

70 MPH = 3,700 RPM, in 6th gear.

Enjoy!

Agree with above. I've 2500mi on my new '07 RT. This bike clearly likes being over 3500 rpm. Power really kicks in over 5K. Dealer emphasized the need to vary the rpm's while breaking the engine in. Opinions on break in period seem to vary, but the average is about 10K miles.
For a while I thought I'd never get it into 6th gear. 2nd seems to go from 0-75mph. But if you are over 75mph, 6th has some utility.
