I have an 06 R1200GS. Did my 600 miles service last summer. Just took it in to have side cases added and I asked if they recommended an oil change. They said there is no need to change the oil which surprised me a little. I need to add a some oil since it is starting to read low but is that correct - no need to change oil? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

I would change it but what do I know compared to the wisdom of BMW? :dunno

What do you mean by "starting to read low"?

Oil should be changed at 6,000 miles or annually if you ride fewer than 6k (snork!).

If your sightglass is reading low, add some oil.

Am I missing something?

The oil level is just barely above the red circle on the sight glass so it is reading low. I definitely ride fewer than 6,000 miles. Not even close. So that means I should change it every year?

Yep. Keep it at the dot in the middle and it'll use less.

If I were you, I'd change it before I put it in storage in the fall. In the spring, change it again to get all the condensation out of it. In the fall, you can put in a new filter, but in the spring, I'd leave the filter in and just swap out the oil.

What Dave said.

Also, your bike is going to use oil for a while. Get used to topping it off from time-to-time. I just turned 4,000 on my 1200, and I had to put it about a 1/4 liter recently.

(One-quarter liter? Is that mixing SAE/metric? Is that an oxymoron? Am I?) :dunno
