Went to buy an oil filter wrench. The cost is $75. (For another BMW model it is $20). There are few companies that make them and sell it for $29-$42, and make a nice profit. Allow me to vent...
We were taken for a ride by BMW for quite a long time. Seems like we gave them a blank check to charge whatever they feel like. Now, the bike itself was expensive but I don't mind being s****d if I get to enjoy it too. With the oil wrench its not a s***w. It is abuse and that's no fun.
My $0.02

I bought two oil filter tools for my R1200RT and R1200GS from Motobins. Cost? About $14 each. Product code 99205.

spent an evening at AutoZone. Tried them all, including the "european special". BMW designers are not nice, but they are smart. The difference between the R1200RT oil filter wrench and the one i use on my K75 in a smidgen of a nano milimeter.
I ended ordering one from SierraBMW and paid second day delivery. Total is same as the BMW part but I sleep better.

Why didn't you buy the one Jeff put up? It's a heck of a lot cheaper.

Jeff, if I might inquire: how long does it take to come across the pond from the UK? And "carriage" (shipping) cost? I am about to order one, but the $19.95 special from Bob's BMW is calling my name due to these concerns...

Incidentally, both Motobins and Nippy Norman's are selling the one you mention.

I don't recall how long it took. Perhaps a week? It wasn't long. I didn't keep the invoice, so I cannot quote shipping costs. It wasn't a whole lot.

Basically, I was suprised how easy and quick it was considering it had to come all the way from Merrie Olde England.

I am going to ride this weekend. I am getting in shape for a long two up trip soon. I already drained the old oil. Putting in new oil with an old filter is like.... well, i cannot come up with anything suitable for this family oriented forum.
Cannot wait to go home and find the small package by the door.

Tools from a vehicle manufacturer are usually expensive. The dealer gets to buy them in mandatory tool shipments. This relates directly to the cost of repair and maintenance. It is good you notice the expenses involved.
It is a very nice filter wrench. Lots nicer than the stamped out ones. I think Wunderlich makes one too for about half the price and it is a nice narrow one which will work on the K12S and R well. Very stylish. You could hang it up on the wall instead of a picture. I once noted that back in the '70s. I noticed that the BMW parts were well finished. It was part of why I fell in love with BMW. I noticed on other brands, there were stamped out parts. They worked well, but were not pleasing to look at for hours like a BMW part. I think that is about the time I read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (in another thread here somewhere...). The subject of quality was a big part of the book and when you see it, you just know. If you try to define it, you could end up schizo.
Now I know BMW sets prices sometimes to a certain price point to stay #91 of the 2000 biggest companies in the world according to Forbes. And sometimes, the part doesn't quite fit the "just knowing" and the image BMW is claiming. But for the most part, that quality thing is the driving factor. I think if you just understand where they are coming from, the anger thing goes away. That is, while they are not trying to trick anyone, the price is not the reason you decide to buy BMW...I can almost hear the German fellow saying, "Would you like to purchase?...The price?...let me check for you...".

I ordered the Motobins wrench online on a Tuesday evening, and it was sitting in my mailbox when I got home from work the following Monday (unlike the US, we don't have Saturday mail delivery). Total cost in $CDN, including shipping, was $22. Good price, and speedy delivery (to Ottawa, Canada). I was impressed.

Unless things have changed at Bob's, wrench is not available. I got one for $35, but is very nice machined aluminum, made in US. I could have paid less, but was not interested in shopping around. I'll have more in the future for replacement in case I lose one- have access to cnc.

I got my wrench at the local Harley dealer. Fits just fine. Only a few bucks.
