I posted an IR shot in one of my ride reports and had a couple of questions
from folks about shooting infrared.

A quick word on my setup. I use a Canon Digital Rebel 350D modified to
shoot IR only. When I compose my shots, all else is the same as an un-modified
camera. That means I can see through the lens, autofocus works as does
auto exposure. The real benefit of this camera is that shutter speeds
remain roughly the same as a "normal" camera. My camera was modified by
the good folks at www.maxmax.com.

Some cameras have an IR mode built in. Like some of the Sony's. I chose the
SLR model because I've got the lenses already.

Most people would shoot IR during the middle of the day as the light is
usually very bright. Ideally, you'd shoot on a day that was bright and had
some nice fluffy clouds and very green foliage as these conditions produce
the images people seem to like.

The real magic occurs when you process the images. I'm still learning how
to do this however I'll say that there are several ways to process the result.
Which method you use depends on the effect you want to achieve.

The camera captures an image that looks a lot like this:

Using Photoshop, I'll convert it to B&W so that it looks more like this...

This is a fairly tame conversion. Really good conversions really want that
bright light and sharp contrast.

Here's a better example of lighting from behind. Notice the trees are white.
This is because they best reflect infrared. Had this been taken earlier in the
afternoon, we'd see beautiful contrasty skies too.

Another method for processing gives you some surreal looking colors. This
phone, for example, has a yellow handset and most of what you see as red
is really blue.

Anyhow, that's what I know about IR photography today. I'm certainly
learning more about the art of Infrared--and I can't wait for the rain to end
so I can make more pictures.

I'll leave you with one other.

Have fun and enjoy photography!
