Oh my.

It looks like you have some Ibuprophen, gum dat don't stick to da teeth and for dinner granola and gin. Also looks like some tuck's medicated pads for the next day. :D

Me, I have my favorite sheild rag, some of the nifty honda spray polish (for da shield) a mini mag light and whatever crap I took / got at my last rally. I also like to carry a little sunscreen, some carmex a coupla maps and if not in the tail section my 'MOA anonymous book.

I carry my Sony DSC-S85 digital camera in my Marsee 20L Magnetic tankbag as well as my reading glasses, my cell phone (which apparently I lost yesterday:eek ), a cover for the tankbag in case of a deluge, ciggies, my wallet and, yes, occasionally a Glock. :D

maps
Anonymous book
Digital camera

Tank bag... Yikes.. It is, like I mentioned, my MAN PURSE!! I'm glad I'm not a woman because I'm sure I'd need back surgery to carry around all the crap I carry in my tank bag when travelling.

Rain boots
Rain pants
Down Sleeping bag (it really compresses small)
Small can of WD-40
Side stand disk for soft dirt
Adapter to go from BMW outlet to Cigarette outlet
Air mattress blower
Camera
Various change and a few dollar bills
Compact flashlights (2)
Lighters (2)
Matches (several)
Aerostich Wind Triangle
Lots O' Maps
Spare gloves
Sunglasses
Clear glasses for night
Leatherman tool
Compass
GPS (Magellan Sportrak Pro) in Map pocket
Glasses screwdriver kit
Small can of bug repellant
Pens (2)
AM/FM Cassette player and earbuds..

Some stuff gets moved around, depending on trips, but most of this stuff in in there 24-7-365... Like I said, I'm glad I have a bike to haul it for me...

It may be valid to ask, "what do you have in your tankbag that you never use?"

I can never find a pen or anything to write on. However, I have about six little notepads and seven pens in there somewhere.

An allen wrench for my aftermarket mirrors. A 10mm wrench. Combo phillips/flat screwdriver. Usually when I need these, I take off the seat and use those in the tool kit.

A little cable lock for my helmet. Two little padlocks. Too paranoid to leave 'em at home. Too much hassle to use 'em.

Maps. Ripped, creased, Iowa, stained between recognition. Can't throw them away. Four year's worth of registrations. Five insurance cards.

An extra key (somewhere). About $386.21 in change. Old gum and hard candy I wouldn't feed to Celine Dion.

Lots of Velcro. One side only. Dried up Super Glue. A cover for an alternator belt showing the Napa part number.

Wires:

Cell Phone charger, Headphone , Heattroller, extra male power plug end, Boosteroo, more, what a mess!

A baggie of extra fastners, including extra tire patches from 1994.
Old vitamins and pain meds I think I got from Celine DEion.

Two extra pair of glasses, old perscriptions, one clear and scratched, one dark and dangerous.

Batteries of all sizes, not categorized as new or used.

Oh, My God. I am not a Beemer Guy!

That damn thing has outlasted three Westcos. It sits on my workbench as a glorified tester of misc. broken electrons.

Like the fur in the bottom of my Marsee, I figure it has some worth.

Butt keep in mind, if you're out on the road and can't find a 12V that fits in the box, all you really need is a Kawasaki dealer and some heavy gauge wire.

On the road for camping? Easy, 1qt coffee press, coffee, baggy full of cream and sugar packets, coffee mug/ boozing glass, small compressor, tire repair kit (just added new patches and glue), the digital camera till I broke it last week, 2 platy bags, 1 full of bourbun, the other gin, pair of merrill shoes, a heattroller, sunglasses, sunscrean, maybe some maps, Garmin, power adapters for everything, MP3 player, spare earplugs, pistol, a pound and a half of loose change, martini shaker, stainless martini glass. Still leaves me enough room to be able to stop at a local store near the campground to add a bag of ice and a 6 pack when I expand it to the full 45 liter capacity

Where do you guys find the stainless martini glasses?

I would love to find a stainless steel set up that includes the shaker, strainer and glass and have it all fit together for storage.

It would make a great gift for some of my 'tini drinking buddies. Hell with that set up I may switch from rum.

Ugh, I just *got* my tankbag, so it's a born-again virgin, since I bought it used. :D

prescription sunglasses
case for clip-ons
rain cover for the bag
pen
spiral notebook
my county sticker that I, uh, haven't put on
state inspection receipt
leatherman
digital camera
ComSystem cord for FRS radio
extra earplugs
sunscreen
kleenex
gotta replace the tums, ate at Wendy's Sunday

That's the unexpanded-bag list from yesterday, and there's room for bunches more. Dunno what all I'll stuff in there when I unzip it.

I've got a big ol' antique shaker I bought at an antique store in Auburn, CA last year. We got to the 49er and realized I had all the booze, but forgot my nifty new little shaker. It'll make a big shaker of three or four martinis and it looks real cool too. It seems to work. fish came by and took this picture as we were giving it a test drive.

I carry the other faceshield (tinted or clear)

Tire pressure gauge

In the extention pocket I carry my 'stich

I hate to say this, but besides the above mentioned products that we all normally carry, I also carry an emergency number someone could call...just in case! I also have the number in my riding suit.

I also carry some medical information. I know, not as exciting as martini glasses....but a necesity nonetheless.

Jeeze, you hadda go ask..:clap

I just refilled it since Bob Weis had it for a month doing a few custom mods.

It's about 2 gallons of stuff with one extra quart thown in.. (kept the crap in a big bucket and a quart jar while the bag was away)

From memory (I don't have the ambition to dig it all out again):

o - Maps to the local area - usually a few
o - Maps to places I went to and forgot to take'm out
o - Maps to places I'd like to run away to and if I get pissed off once more I'm running away from home to

o - WeeWilly - carried it for years, SWMBO and son bought it for me one birthday 'cause they thought the name was so qute. Never used it on the RT, use it all the time now that I got the S. Hadda buy a refill for the splooge in it.

o - Leatherman - won it someplace (doorprize) so figure since I don't carry Weapons of Localized Destruction (WLD in George talk), I'd toss this in, just in case I run into a crazed bunny or something. I could plier the thing to death.. or mebbe throw it at the damn bunny and bruise it or something.

o - Little fuzzy stuff (ultra-whatever that stuff you make pullovers outta) pouch. In that I carry:

o - The cable/lock that the leatherman would he good to use to get off if I ever forget the combination (can you count to 4? - I knew you could!), used to use it through the sleeves of my 'stitch until I realized the 'stitch could fit in a sidecase

o - Radio**** DVM (Digital Voltmeter for you non-techies). Have never used it on my bike while on the road. Have used it at rallies on other peoples bikes and have used it in the garage on my bike (in fact - planning to this weekend)

Oh - now I remember - UltraFleece - that's what the bag is
made outta. I think it came from Rider Warehouse.

o - Stop and Go kit (the BMW tire kit is in the tailpod) - has this nice gun looking thing that I could mebbe use on the bunny (shoot it with rubber bullets!) of the Leatherman didn't work.

o - RiderWarehouse Evapodana - left over from the RT where I used to get WAY too hot sometimes.

o - RiderWarehouse insulating kerchief - needed more on the S since I don't get WAY too hot too often, but sometime do get WAY too cold.

The two above do look redundent - could use the Evapodana
for both purposes - but what'da I know.

o - One of those plastic sidestand pucks from Allstate insurance. It was given away at some rally. With a string on it so I can attach it to the bars when parked and drag it behind me when I ride away and forget to pick it up.

o - Handmade sidestand puck made from 1/2" plywood, a string on this that serves same function as string on the Allstate one.

o - Several short bungies (don't tell Helen!) - to bungie the stunned bunny to the bike

o - MowTow card - so I'll never need it (haven't yet!)

o - Finger squeegie thingie - slips over a finger in case I wanna make money while doing door-guard duty at a rally. Just need the next item and I'm in business.

o - Sport bottle (well - old Gatorade bottle with the sport top) of water that I filled up Gawd knows when in case I end up in the middle of a Gawdforsaken desert somewhere (or need some green spit to use with the finger squeegie to pick up a few bucks)

o - Big ass old Penthouse cigar in a glass tube. Dunno - someone at work gave it to me when I was leaving for a rally. Rumor has it Monica was intimate with this exact cigar. It's a big sucker. Bigger than the Wee Willie. Lots bigger in fact.

o - Matchbooks without a lot of matches in them, most of them kinda soft and mushy

o - The usual collection of spare and slightly used by fuzzy earplugs (I didn't know ear wax would grow stuff like that)

o - Small first aid kit - like for a splinter. A very small splinter.

o - Buncha out of date business cards for me in our club from the place that prints them for free (great deal BTW) and just charges for ths shipping. Have new ones on order.

o - Bic lighter with no fluid, but the sparker still works so I just couldn't throw it out (could prolly scare the bunny away with the sparks)

o - Extra cord for the Gerbing stuff - have a built in Heattroller (so there KBasa!) that I don't want to break, so invoking my law of spares seemed like a wise idea

o - Whatever pair of gloves I am least likely to need. In the summer it's usually the heated Gerbing gloves, in the winter the motocross mesh ones. This just seems to happen.

o - Pair of silk inner gloves. I forget why - except someone said to get these. They would be handy at a crime scene if I was the criminal. I wouldn't leave ANY fingerprints around the bunny.

o - Old pair of prescription sunglasses - where the presciption is SO old that they are *almost* valueless. Invoking Eilenberger's Law again.

o - 1 card that will let 2 people of adult age into a local nudie bar. Haven't found anyone worthy to take with me. It's a booze free bar so that's OK. It's also a VERY nude bar. That's also OK. Just expensive (even wtih the free admission card). But that's ALSO OK. What else am I gonna waste money on? The bike? HAHAHA!

o - Manditory bottle of ibprofen. Mostly turned to dust now, so it looks like a suspicious white powder.

o - Worlds remaining supply of our club patch. I keep these to barter with Native Americans (pc) to skin the bunny if I suceed in stunning it.

o - Raincover for the tankbag that Bob Weis finally put snaps on that match up to the bag (wasn't his fault, really.. I kept this raincover when I sold another bag. Really.)

o - Garage door opener that sometimes works when I don't even intend it to. It's like magic - I'm coming down the street and UP goes the garage door and I didn't move a finger. Amazes the people who were following me. Then I thought of H2W and the magic Apple laptop (if you gotta ask..)

o - Tokens for bridges that are no longer accepted

o - A very green quarter. Kinda fuzzy too - it was kept too close to the spare earplug supply.

o - My lawyers card in case I get caught trying to shoot the bunny with the Stop-And-Go gun. Or some cop gets really picky about the white powdered ibprofen.

o - Fuzzy case for the GPS. Usually empty since the GPS is on the outside of the bike right in front of the tank.

o - One floppy disk. I think it was left over from a dyno run.

o - Some tie-wraps - the motorcyclists duct-tape. I have a big one I could use as a tornequet, or to handcuff the bunny.

o - A plastic garbage bag to drag beer and ice around rallies with.

o - Kewl little kit the credit-union gave me the other day for talking to them (they ran outta those squeeze-balls) that has a tiny little sewing kit in it, some headache powder in a glassine envelope (sheeze - the cops are gonna wonder), one bandaid and their name printed on the outside of the kit in case I have a sudden urge to call them.

And some other stuff.

And it's not even near full yet. This is just for around town riding, before a trip I load it up.

That's it - this is ALL you need in a tank bag. Sorta the definative list.:p :p

Last summer was the first year I ever used a tank bag in my 28 years of motorcycling.

I never really liked them all that much, but I finally had a need for one.

I found it the safest place to store my Sony Handycam while it is taking on-bike videos that are captured by my helmet mounted lipstick camera. Along with the camera, it stores the battery pack for the lipstick camera and excess wiring.

Maps and other small odds 'n ends find plenty of room in my Aerostich suit. Other items end up in the tail pack or luggage bags.

I started using an Eclipse tankbag in the late 1970s because I had a Kawasaki KZ750 that had no storage space whatsoever except a little, teeny fairing pocket in the Vetter Quicksilver fairing. Once I had the Eclipse, I couldn't imagine ever riding again without one.
Fact is, though, that the next series of bikes I bought - '93 GL1500, '96 R1100RT, '99 K1200LT - didn't really need a tankbag because they had so much other room available. But when I bought the GS last summer, the first thing I investigated was a tankbag. A mighty handy tool to have. :)

As long as you can see up close. I couldn't make out the map and GPS when it was under the map window of my tank bag last summer (I don't like bi-focals), but then, as I mentioned, I bought my first tank bag for another reason.

Product note: I bought a Chase Harper Compac 750 strap on tank bag. No matter how well one straps the bag down, it still wobbles from side to side. CH picked the wrong attach points for their straps. Yet I will say that attention to detail of any Chase Harper product that I have is first rate. I'm just not happy with this particular product.

Hey - it takes years to figure out EdZachery what needs to be in a tank bag.

I also have two sidecases and one top case.. the sidecases when not going to rallies carry things like the bike cover, the rain cover for my seat, spare gloves (in case I don't have enough of the wrong ones in the tankbag) and serve as storage for my helmet and 'stitch when I'm parked somewhere that I'd look like a dork (well - more dorky) wearing that stuff, or where I'd worry about being able to stash it somewhere ( the nudie bar surprisingly doesn't have a coat rack - go figure.. )

Anyway - I'm supposed to be giving a K-tech session with Data Curry at Charleston - mebbe if enough people found some beer for me I could do a session on The Well Travelled Tank Bag - or how does all that crap fit in there? .

As most people who know me can attest to - I bribe easily - beer does it just fine. Doesn't even have to be good beer - just FREE beer.

Rick,
My Eclipse long ago disappeared, probably given to a friend or something when I got out of motorcycles briefly about 15 years ago.
I replaced it over the winter with a Marsee 20-liter Teardrop magnetic model. Due to the slope of the GS tank, it fits it perfectly. The magnets hold it beautifully but there are also straps that wrap around the steering head as an extra safety measure.
Regarding new cameras, mine is new ... at least to me. After a lot of research, I picked a Sony DSC-S85 4 megapixel model a couple of months ago. It's larger than a compact point-and-shoot but not so horsey that you're tempted to leave it at home. Fits quite nicely in the Marsee and is ready for action in a few seconds.

Is that a refrigerated tankbag?

I think Wallace would want to borrow it for his bike.

Two words: Billy Beer

If you're too young to remember it - it was sold by late
lamented brother of President Jimmy Carter.

Bought a 6 pack once - kinda as a joke. We had 6
people. We tried to drink it. Ended up with 5 full
cans and 1 partially finished can.

It smelled like the turtle tank after you forgot to
change the water and the turtle died. I think it
tasted worse - but I never tried the turtle tank
water. It had about the same color and head.

THAT was bad beer. It was not good beer, cold, warm,
hot or at any temperature. It was just plain bad.

And now the cans are a collectors item (and I threw
them all out after flushing the contents directly from
the cans - not even doing the normal pre-processing).

I only use the tank bag for touring, but I stuff all of my clothes in it (in ziploc bags just to make sure they stay dry). I carry my camera in one of the side pockets for easy access. The remaining pockets get filled with maps, batteries for the GPS and camera, extra GPS memory card, Anonymous book, pack of kleenex, rain cover and any thing else that will fit. I try to keep all the heavy stuff down low in the system cases because I like to enjoy the twisties and don't want too much weight up top.

There is the glasses, they also have the little vermouth sprayer, which I carry wrapped in a paper towel inside the shaker, I use a small (1 drink at a time size) shaker to save some space.

Dood! You made my day! I didn't even know I needed those until you posted the pic..... :clap

But that vermouth sprayer......you must drink vodkatinis ?
Try a nice Boodles martini, or if yer buxup, Tanqueray "Ten".

Mully, I finally broke down and bought some Tanqueray 10. It just doesn't get better than that, though the bottle is hard to fit in a tank bag.

I find that most booze bottles fit nice and secure in the old City Bags. Wrap your rain gear around it for insulation and your set for any situation that may arise on the road. :D

Yes, I've got a tank bag. What's in it. That's a good question. I lost track of what's in there. There's some ibuprofen, Tums, bandanna, cell phone, tea, garage remote, visor cleaner, maps, and a lot more crap. I think I need to go out and take another look.

It's a small bag, and I never seem to have enough space, and when I turn the handle bars far to the left, it turns off my lights (88 R100 RT with European headlight switch). I know it's time to get a bigger bag, but my motorcycle dollars have been spent on other more important things like proper riding gear and necessary repairs.

In my tank bag:

Extra pair sunglasses.
iPod
Garage door opener
Wallet
Cell phone
Tank bag rain cover
Extra fleece jacket
Water bottle
Ditty bag with lip balm, business cards, check books, and other personal items

In the radio box:

Tire repair kit
Tire pressure gauge
Bicycle tire pump
Flashlight
Extra shields for Oakley M-frame sunglasses
BMW tool kit
Owner's Manual, Authority Bike Supplementary Owner's Manual, Service Manual
BMWMOA Anonymous Book
Registration, Proof of Insurance

This time of year I usually dispense with the tank bag and go to a computer-type bag that fits in a side case, so I can keep everything out of the rain. The tank bag goes away with the mesh jacket, and the 'Stich comes out when it gets cool and wet here in Seattle.

I haven't been particularly fond of tank bags primarily due to them marking up the finish of your gas tank over time and for that reason, I've only used one once (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showpost.php?p=941&postcount=37).

But now that a few non-contact tank bags are on the market, I'll consider a small one for things like a P&S camera, a small bottle of water, etc.

I'll be looking at the SW-Motech Quick-Lock system (http://www.mo-tech.de/sockets/?PHPSESSID=eabcaf04dcf6aec98e58512d928b411a) along with their Daypack II tankbag (http://www.mo-tech.de/produkt/?produkt_id=1643).

Dave, you must be pretty bored to be digging up all these old threads! :p

Anyway, yeah, I've got still got a tankbag- got a new bag for the new bike! What resides in it varies, but at minimum I carry extra ear-plugs, a tube of medicated lip-balm, and the bag's rain-cover. For many rides I add a camera, and if my brain is REALLY screwed on tight that day I might even remember the extra batteries for it (LOL). If there's a chance of rain and I'm wearing the mesh-suit, I'll throw in the rainsuit. I often also carry a microfibre rag and sunscreen. There's often a pen in the bag too.
When touring, I'll add extra sunglasses and extra gloves and all sorts of other things from a Leatherman tool to a bag of peanuts or gorp. Maps too and a tire-gauge of course. A head-lamp and condoms. And of course anything that I think I'll need quick access to during the ride, like keys if I have some for where I'm going or directions to a specific destination.

clean socks
gold bond

I have a truly cavernous tank bag system that I use on my R80 over long trips. It's a Famsa bag; you can use the large bottom bag, the top bag, both the top and bottom bag, and the top + bottom with the bottom bag expanded. The latter is WAAAAAY too big for me. You can just see over it. :)

For my last long trip, I used the bottom bag to keep heavy stuff in (and out of the saddlebags) and then the top one had more day-to-day stuff:

Bottom:

spare alternator rotor, brushes, springs, Bead Brakr Kit (tire irons, lube, etc), tire talc, single-use hand warmers, multitester, collapsible cup, second pair of gloves, spare tube, tube patches, anon book, Airheads Dairectory, baclava, digital camera / phone charging wires + pigtail to wire into the bike, flashlight, clutch cable, throttle cable, brake cable, spare flashlight batteries, matches, rain cover, glove liners, cable lock and other misc. locks, generally a bottle of water, and probably a few other things I'm forgetting... maybe a kitchen sink.

Top:

Book I got at the rally this year, passport, wallet, cell phone, maps, loose change, chapstick, face shield wipes, misc. drugs (otc and prescription), digital camera, Leatherman multitool, important documents (reservations, etc), tire gauge, bug spray, pen, notepad

I must be forgetting a lot. When taking that tank bag off the bike, it felt like I had 70 pounds or more inside. It worked great, though. The lower bag is a bit wide if you're doing a lot of low-speed riding where you're steering a lot, but you get used it to, and know when you're about to hit the kill switch. It's a non-issue on the road, of course.

Got tankbag ............?

Sure, I've got a Marsee 10L Tear Drop magnetic tank bag on my 97 R 1100 RT.

What is in it as we speak?

Can of plexus, replacement rubber boot for shifter lever, 2 micro fiber towels, lots of foam ear plugs, tooth paste and brush from dentist visit yesterday, sun glasses, spare gloves.

I have always been the odd man out with my tank bag. It is where I carry clothing. All those odds and ends go in the topcase, fairing pockets, or someplace else. Clothes go in the tankbag. At camp, or a motel I grab the tankbag and take the clothes into the tent or motel room.

I do have a leather fannypack which attaches around the tank bag to add external pocket space for odds and ends - small flashlight - Ibuprofen - small multitool, etc.

Reading that reminded me of an encounter a friend of mine had with a BMW R1100/1150 GS rider in my area.

I believe these two were involved in organizing a charity event and got to talking in the parking lot.

Of course the BMW rider with the "huge" Hepco & Becker aluminum bags was bragging about all the space he had. Flipping open a cover, he started to go over the contents within the case that are used for emergency road repairs. He started rattling off :blah: the duct tape, the stainless steel wire, (the usual stuff), etc.

My friend just looked on and when she could finally get a word in edgewise, responded, "what do I need all that for, I ride a Yamaha" while also holding up her cell phone. :rofl

I had my own reasons for chuckling. BTW, I too bring back-up gear along, but only when I'm riding in a really remote area such as the Trans Labrador Highway and similar.

Thankfully I can save face; my trip after this years rally was North around Lake Superior, and then into Quebec and up the James Bay Road. :)

Really, I usually just carry a spare cable or two, but I surely didn't want to get stranded in Chisasibi! :eek

So did you camp on the shores of James Bay?

I didn't camp all the way up there; I'm not sure the Cree would allow you to camp on the shores. It would be a rocky campsite, to say the least. I DID camp at Matagami Lake, though. It was enjoyable... if you like black flies. :hungover

That's one heck of a kit for $7.50. I need to call one of my contacts in Germany and see if I can't get one mailed here. I'm thinking of riding the Trans-Labrador this next year, once I finish getting the GSPD prepared. I've been eyeballing one of the Wolfman tankbags for the PD.
