Where did you get the crash bar with the highway pegs?
creola
05-30-2006, 04:43 AM
Moneill, the crash bar is standard BMW issue. The pegs are the rear pegs from the bike that I relocated to the front after making the frame for the Pelican cases and attaching one point of the frame to the original rear peg mount. The mount for the pegs I machined on a Sherline mill and lathe. Look in the F650 forum for "highway pegs" and you will see more close up photos of the pegs. Here's one of the peg folded up.

Well Done.
You have the wheels turning - the mental ones. Very much like the highway pegs ideas. I just don't like the folded up posture of many bikes. This would give the chance to stretch out on a longer ride.
Thanks again for a great idea.

I just got it on Friday, I found it on the IBMWR site. The previous owner generously trailered it 700 Kms to me, arriving late Friday evening. Needless to say it ended up being a very late night since I just couldn't make myself come in from the garage untill I'd read the entire manual and tinkered with everything :clap (while enjoying a few celebartory scotches :bottle )
It is very clean, I would like to get out and get it dirty, but unfortunately don't have it registered yet. Now the forecast says its going to drop to -20C over the next few days and stay that way. Dang! :mad
I've all ready got a Dakar tall seat coming and a manual on CD-ROM. I'm researching saddlebags, so far I'm leaning towards the Caribou bags, maybe even in yellow to match the bike.

Hey Ron,
Are the deflectors in front of the forks from a Triumph? Clue me in on where to get them.
Your bike is looking good. I like the saddle bags you have, but i don't recognize what brand they are.
The deflectors are from Triumph. Most Triumph dealers carry them in short and tall versions. I have the tall version fitted. It took a little dremel action to make them fit. The bags are Hepco & Becker in 30 l. size. A 40 l. is made but I like the looks of the smaller ones and with larger bags, I tend to fill them up.

Different fork guards are discussed in the F650.com FAQs. Beside the Triumph ones, Touratech has a set specifically for an F650:

I got into some really sticky mud going down a dirt road, no dirty water, it was gumbo. It was fairly warm today and the past couple of days, so the snow had melted and the top 1" of mud had thawed. The Tourances were not worth a darn in that and the front low fender plugged up pretty quick. Tried parking the bike on its side (don't recommend it), but no damage. I'm thinking that if I am going to get into mud again, I'll need different tires and might lose the low fender.
It took me over an hour to get it all cleaned off again.

I hope this works. Took a bit to figure out how to resize.
This is my first bike I bought in June '06. I put 7,000km on it the first season. (It had less than 8 when I picked it up) This was taken on my first long weekend ride by myself. I went from Borden to Kingston, went SCUBA Diving with friends for two days, carried on to Ottawa and back home thru the twisties by Bancroft in the pouring rain. I even managed to travel a little on the 401 slab and survived. (I feel like this little bike likes to get tossed by the big trucks) Planning much longer trips for this season.

Here is my CS parked in the alley. I purchased it used and put 8K miles on it commutting the first year. I had to stopped riding the end of January because of the snow. Then started back up the end of March. This year I am investigating getting a third wheel for the winter riding season. Jay from Dauntless said that he only has made on mount kit for a CS. Now I may be the second.

This is my 2004 F650gs Dakar it's seen me through Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territory's, Yukon, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, and Idaho. It's had alot of modifications since I got it Chistmas 2004. I've been debating that in the near future it may go through another change with the addition of a third wheel. Anyways here is a picture of it in 2005 then in 2007:

Just happened to be looking at all the new 650 pics.... nice bikes guys!
That bag is a Wunderlich tail bag for a R1150R ...it fits the 650 also quite well...it has an expandable capability going from about 4"tall to 8"ish. Also has a small map pocket on top .It has two wide canvas straps that velcro together under seat.

I want to go over the Andes in the summer. I'm told that December would be a good time for that. I'm going to ride my R1100RT in Europe this summer (northern hemisphere) and then come home again for a little while before heading to South America. Might make a start a little before November, but not too much sooner. At least that's my thinking at the moment.
As for the farkles on the bike: the picture is how it came (along with nice boxes on the back sides. I'll be adding some bars around the engine and faring area and a GPS and maybe some other stuff, but I don't know where the previous owner got the stuff that's on it now. So far I've only had it a few days and only ridden it a few miles.
I like it. Lot's easier to ride than the RT at only half the weight. Now if only I could get myself down to half the weight, we'd be a winning combination!:wave

Pacwestgs,
I have found, after many years of travelling by every conveyance imaginable, that if I pull out of my driveway needing a tent and a sleeping bag, I'm going to require as much stuff for a three nighter as I would for a 30+ day outing. Being retired, I seldom know much about a trip other than the departure date. I have fine tuned my luggage for the little GS by adding 41L aluminum panniers and a bomb proof Seal Land bag . . . this has lowered my profile greatly and you can actually see me on the bike from behind now!

What a beauty! (your Hudson, that is).
When I was a member of the school boy patrol back in the fifties, my fellow "officer" Ronnie Case and I were especially fond of the mellow, deep-throated rumble of the Hudsons -- and Mercs. That was back when you could identify an automobile by its exhaust note alone.
It's not mine. I was out for a ride on my F650 and was looking for some photo opportunities and just happened upon it sitting outside an auto repair shop. I may post some more photos. No one was around. I would like to hear what she sounds like also! After I got home I had to get on the internet and research what year it might be. I really like some of the other views of this car.

Why didn't I buy a 1200GS..... besides the fact I didn't want to spend $20K plus on a bike, the 650 is perfect for 95% of the riding I'll be doing, and it's better offroad.
In a few years when I get the chance to do some long distance touring, I'll add a 1200GS to the barn.

I just picked up a new X Challenge............Although I only have 50 miles on it, seems like a great bike.

I've attached a photo of my 650 XC with it's new Corbin among other farkles. The Corbin has changed the bike for me. I used to get lower back pain because the stock saddle had zero support. At first, the Corbin feels very firm, but after awhile the support is really nice.

I put a Renazco Racing seat on mine and it's great, though it doesn't have the back support you're describing.
An item of note is carrying much on the rear rack on the X-Challenge. The original subframe is really light on this bike. I learned this when I replaced it with a Touratech steel subframe because I installed bags on the bike. My guess is it wouldn't take too many whacks with any weight on the rear rack to cause a fracture/failure of the original aluminum sub-frame. I'm sure that with casual riding this wouldn't be an issue but I'd be concerned if I hung much over 20 pounds on the tail end and rode on rough stuff.

Nice looking. I'm curious. I tried to make the Wunderlich lift handle work from my R1150R, but I couldn't find a good mounting point. How did you attach the lifting handle? ( Do you have a picture? )
What mount did you use for your PIAA lights?
Thanks for posting the pictures of your nice bike.

i used the frame the Jesse boxes attach to for the lift handle and the piaa lights came in a kit for the F650 which included the mount. sorry i don't have a pic of the piaa mount.

Thanks for showing me how you attached the lift handle. Would not work for me since I don't have those bags. I really liked the handle on my R1150R and have been trying to come up with something for the F650 thumper.

Perhaps a bracket can be attached to the frame ? im using the BMW Case system ...there is nothing that is attached to that point in the frame so perhaps something can be fabricated so that one of these Wunderlich frame handles can be retrofitted.

I have Happy Trails bags, so the frame is available. I just haven't figured out a good way to attach a lifting handle without getting in the way of the rear peg.

I have the tubular HT rear rack, and it works well for use as a lifting handle.
Here's a picture of it:

The angle pieces are what I grab onto.
