The neutral switch is going bad. Where is it and how difficult to replace [97 R-1100R]

Thanks!

The switch is located on the back end of the transmission. To replace it you usually need to remove the swing arm.

.... you usually need to remove the swing arm.

I think it is fair to say you have to remove the swing arm.

I think it is fair to say you have to remove the swing arm.

I know that is the case with my RS, I just wasn't 100% sure if all the models were the same way. Fortunately, its not as bad a job as it might first appear.

Well I guess I better dig out the manual and see what is involved in removing the swingarm.

I know heat is required to loosen the swingarm pivot bolts and a 17mm hex driver. Other than that any suggestions or hints? I would suspect it doesnt have to come off all the way, just enough to get the switch behind it out.

thanks

I currently have my 98 R1100RT apart to put in a new clutch. The swing arm has to come out all the way. Use a heat gun to heat up the pins and lock nuts. BMW uses a lock tight the is similar to the Loctite brand red. Be sure to have the area well heated. Take you time (15 to 25 minutes). You do not want to "muscle" out the pin and have the threads damaged by the hard lock tight material. The neutral swtich is held in by two small 7mm hex head screws. The clearance between the screw and the neutral switch body is vety tight. I had to hand file my socket to a chissel point to get it to fit over the hex head. You should also get a new oil seal and o-ring. I had a "lazy" neutral switch so I replaced it while I have it apart. You might as well grease the drive shaft splines while your at it. This is no small job. Good Luck!
