I think a lot of the collective wisdom of this forum. I'm considering taking the plunge on a used bike--an '05 R1200GS w/ABS. Here are the particulars:

The Good News:
Less than 5,000 miles.
New stock muffler
ABS
cross spoke wheels
Jesse bags

The Bad News:
Noticable scratches on left cylinder head (from metal boot guards)
marred finish on tank paint (from tank bag--can be buffed out?)
Jesse bags are marked up pretty good (no real dings or dents)
Seat is a bit marked up

I would give the bike a 7.5 or 8 on overall appearance. It's in good condition, but not great.

I know and trust the owner. The bike is mechanically sound. Another trusted friend has worked on it and assures me that the bike is solid. Kelly Blue Book retail is $12,305 for an '05 with ABS. I see them in the ON and online advertised for around $15,000. Retail new is $15,700 w/o bags.

What's a reasonable, realistic price?

I just purchased a new 2006 from Tampabay BMW for $14,900 with ABS. For another couple grand buy a new one. When you purchase new you know how it was broken in and from what you said you know it has been down. Plus you get a new warranty.

P.S. Its only money.

The mileage isn't bad, but sounds like a lot of "wear and tear" for only 5K miles, UNLESS a lot of those were off road.

The Jesse bags will set ya back around 1200 bucks. Why a new stock muffler?? Boot Guards, only on the left?

Sounds like it is "rough" at worst, ok to good cond at best. I would think 500 to 1K off the KBB would be a reasonable price...

Remember, most times the accessories "on the bike" aren't worth much, maybe 10 - 25% of what the accessory cost new. Better to sell them separately, you get more. Don't pay e-bay prices for what is on the bike. Negotiate the price regardless of accessories, go from there.

The 06 price is in the 14's not the 15s like the 05's were.

IMHO, YMMV, the red 06 is a MUCH better bike... :D :D :D :type :lurk

It is primarily off-road.

Had a lowered muffler. Took it off and replaced it with the unused stock muffler. Bike went down once at a stop light. Seriously marred the right cover which was replaced. The left remains with the boot scratches.

That sounds like good advice.

'06 with ABS is $15,700 (BMW retail) at local So. Cal. dealers.

I'll bet it's a real beaut. Wanna sell it? :laugh

Thanks for the advice!

I paid 14,500 for a new '05 ,in the month of Jan '06.
ABS,grips,handguards,mag wheels.
Anything over 12,000 for a used GS1200 is not worth it.
Buy new and get the warranty. Still plenty of '05's around. Save yourself 1500 $$$.

Data point: in October '05 I purchased a used '05 R1200GS from a dealer. It is equipped as follows:

- spoke wheels ($495 add'l in '05)
- ABS
- heated grips
- BMW side cases (no topcase however)
- BMW tank bag
- BMW engine guard
- barbacks (since removed)

We are talking about a pristine, mint, superb, flawless machine with 3009 miles. Cost $15,000 which I felt was fair enough to say "yes" although not a killer deal.

I wouldn't pay a whole lot of money for a bike that's been scratched up offroad. Maybe $10K?

The first bidder bought the bike, so I'm off the hook.

I had pretty much decided, with the help of this forum and some independent research, that I would offer $12,000. I was not confident that he would accept that offer.

FWIW, the bike sold today for $13,800. Both parties seem satisfied, so good for them. I appreciate the input I received on this thread.

Since I'm not buying the GS, however, I get to buy a cool Kawaski 650 dualsport (I'm paying about $600 under blue book--older but in pristine condition). My riding buddies have been after me to get into the dirt, so off I go! :bikes

Now back to saving for a used 1200GS? An '06GS? An '06GSA? Time (and overtime) will tell. . . .

I don't know what they went for in your area but in Nov. 05 I paid $14,445 + tax etc new for my 05 w/ABS and heated grips. Added a set of Jessie bags from Jesse that were blems for $800 but have yet to see where the blemish is?
I know that doesn't help you decide what that one is worth but if he's pushing $14-15k I'd look at a brand new one. Just my $0.02 worth...

I believe it is sound advise not to buy a used one for more than $12,000. If you are set on a 05 model, start calling different dealers to see what they have available. You may be able to find a new one very reasonable. Don't forget to calculate your trip charge in though. And of course with new the big first service... Good luck.

Mags or spokes? That changes the deal by about $500 one way or the other. Oh, and you might as well add a couple-three hundred $ for the 600 mile service if you buy new.

Before I bought my used '05 GS (see above) I was shopping new, so I had all the pricing issues pretty square in my head. When all was said and done, the bike I ended up with saved me $2635 over a brand-new purchase identically equipped. The 600 mile service and 6% state sales tax is counted in that.

Mags or spokes?
That was w/mags.
