My son sent me a post from the Airheads web site that said that BMW has extended the warranty on parts to two years effective April 2003. This was from a Ted Porter who was a service manager for 15 years until he opened up his own shop in the San Francisco area in 2005 (see www.beemershop.com). Here is a portion of his post on the Airheads web site:

Little known fact:
Did you know that if you buy a new BMW part after April 1 2003, the part
carries a two year warranty, or the balance of the new bike warranty of
the
bike it was installed on, whichever is greater. If the part fails during
the
warranty period, and it is determined that a warranty matter exists, your
BMW dealer will replace the part and install the part at no charge even if
you originally installed the part yourself. Of course this is assuming you
want your dealer to install the part for you

I followed up on this because I had a second rear drive failure on my K1200LT last summer 23 months after the first one. Santa Fe BMW got BMWNA to pay for half of the part but the rest was on me. When the 24 month warranty was brought to the service manager's attention, he checked with BMWNA and promptly told me that the entire repair, parts and labor, was covered and he would send me a check for my portion of the repair. He felt so badly about not catching the change in policy that he even split my tow costs as a good will gesture.

So, keep the 24 month figure in mind if you should have to replace a part on your machine. And I highly recommend Santa Fe BMW. They did all , and more, that was expected of them.
