I have the opportunity to obtain a 1986 R80RT in order to settle a $1200 debt owed to me.

The bike has 8000 miles on the odometer but has been sitting for a long period of time.

The engine runs but the engine oil seems very dirty.

The wind screen is yellowed and the under side of the fairing is cracked around the clock area. One of the side pocket covers is missing.

The fuel tank has some rust flakes on the inside and the fuel taps are missing!

All of the cables are stiff or frozen. All of the rubber parts are cracked and dry including the tires.R80

The battery covers and tool kit are missing, of course.

Is this bike worth reviving or should I find an other way to recover my debt?

I would take it if there is absolutely no other way to recover the debt. Sounds like a pile to me, unfortunately.

It's so hard to no to a bike that has/had such great potential.

I would take the bike. Here are my main two reasons: It is a good way to ensure that you get your debt settled, secondly the bike is worth more in parts than whole. You may only get $1500.00 as a whole, but in parts exceed $2000.00. Think about the value of replacing wheels, brakes, fairing, forks, transmission, motor, and electrics... What year? How long sitting? I am be interested... :stick

Duh :doh It would help if I read your whole post again before answering. I have an 86, I would take it hands down... When can I come by and pick it up??? :wave

Yeah..I would agree with diaper dude...it sounds like a LOT of work just to get it on the road...BUT it runs. It sounds like it would be worth $1200 but definately not any more than that. I wouldnt run it too much with gunky oil in it. Do you NEED the cash? Lets just say for instance you dropped $500 in it for new rubber and cables etc..I'm sure you could get the investment back fairly quick on ebay or an ad in the ON flea market.

by the way...I like the pic you have in your avatar...it looks an aweful lot like one I saw on ebay last year with a custom fairing-seems that it was out of Calif. it would be cool to see a full size shot of it.

A big question to ask the owner is why has the bike been sitting. A blown trans or rear end definitely would make taking the bike a losing proposition. Has it been crashed and if so are the frame / forks straight? I'd dump the oil, add fresh, spray lube all the cable ends (they just may be crudded up) and at least ride it around the block. Run into all the gears and see if there is a gear problem. If no problems and it tracks straight then snap it up.
