I will be on my honeymoon in San Francisco, CA next week, and am going to rent a machine from Dubbelju, as I was granted a 3/4 day hall pass to ride. Any suggestions for a San Fran area day trip? Thanks! Chuck :bolt

In order of importance:

1. Hwy 1 south to Big Sur.
2. Skyline, lunch at Alice's, Hwy 9 to Boulder Creek, Bonny Doon Winery, Hwy 1.
3. Marin and Sonoma (talk to Kbasa)

Bring some warm weather with ya too. I got hailed on yesterday! A little snow in the mountains too.

Not a riding suggestion, but be sure to have a bite at The Stinking Rose.

Or check out Half Moon Bay...lots of seals & some neat scenery off of Hwy 1! I wanted to go across the bridge & get photos from the other side but didnt make it.

If you do go and you like wine, then BDW should be a stop. I'm a fan of
their reds. So I would recommend as a nice every day red, Big House Red.
For something a bit nicer, either Le Cigar Volant or Cardinel Zin.

So that you know, BDW uses screw tops. What ever you think of them (I
think they're great), don't let it deter you.

If you come South on Hwy 1 (as you should), plan a stop at Whale City
Bakery. The apple pie with a nice cuppa coffee...ah (don't tell your new
bride). Whale City is in the sleepy town of Davenport. OBTW, if you
sit at the counter or outside, you will have a spectacular view of the
beach.

Or, olallieberry pie at Duarte's in Pescadero. I went by there today, and even in the rainy weather, they were packed.

South on 280 to Hwy 17 in to Santa Cruz. North on CA 1 from Santa Cruz and up to Bonny Doon WInery. Back down to 1, up to CA 9.. (forget the number). Up to Alices Restaurant for late lunch. Down the other side back to 280 and back up to the city. Can't beat it.

Yes. Their pies are wonderful too. Not to mention the artichoke soup and
other little goodies make this a worthy destination.

Also not a suggestion. Just saying Hi and that I am now living down in Monterey, 2 blocks from the beach! So all the west coast crazies I met at the redwood Fungal ride are invited anytime. I've been loving this great riding weather, looking forward to hooking up with some folks for a day ride, soon as I finish my scuba lessons (i.e. anytime in March) :wave

Nice! Is this move permanent?
Ian408 and I are in the planning stages of an Anti-Fungal Ride/Camping down to the Santa Maria-Santa Barbara area this spring.

You want to dive off that little beach away from the crowds and right next
to the Monterey Bay Inn...better yet, see if your instructor will take you to
the aquarium pipes--just off the Row--look for the two yellow marker bouys.
If you've got good viz and calm water, the break water all along the rocks
yields some interesting finds. If you find the bathtub, toilet and roll holder,
let me know.

If, for some reason you can't get too far from the city, please consider one of my favorite rides in the area.

From I-680 in San Jose, take Alum Rock Ave. East and follow CA130 as it takes a 90-degree right. If you get to Alum Rock Park, you missed the turn.

CA130 takes you over Mount Hamilton, super-twisty and fun, with many turn-outs to stop and enjoy the view.

Down near the bottom of the hill, go straight on Mines Road. This is an amazing and desolate road along a river. This time of year, the wildflowers are out and beautiful.

This road goes up to Livermore, which you can take west back to the bay, just south of Oakland.

This is an amazing ride and you won't believe how alone you'll be while so near to a major metro area.

My sister in San Jose says it snowed there this weekend. Lots of snow up on Mt Hamilton. First big snow since 1976. This is way unusual.

Yup, you can see a lot of snow from the valley on that mountain range.

If you want to come up to Marin, let me know. I can send you a pretty nice loop.

You'll cross the Golden Gate bridge on the way. If you're traveling with your bride, I can recommend a nice spot for lunch too.

Basically, cross bridge, take Hwy. 1 up the coast. You should be in Pt. Reyes Station about lunch time. The Pine Cone Diner serves up a tasty lunch.

From there, head north on 1 to Tomales. Right before town, take the right and head out toward Chileno Valley. Take Chileno Valley Road out to Marshall - Petaluma, take a right. Go over the hill, take Hicks Valley back to Pt. Reyes - Petaluma Road, take a right. Follow PR - Petaluma to Nicasio Valley Road, left on NVR. Take that to Lucas Valley Road, left on Lucas Valley. Lucas Valley out to 101 and then south to the city.

It'll take you four or five hours to ride and will cover coastal scenery, cruising through some wonderful eucalyptus groves, some wonderful coastal scenery, some redwoods, some vineyards, some ranch land, oyster farming and some beautiful, twisty roads.

Be sure to pack a camera.

If you have a GPS, I can pack up a file for you.
