View Full Version : Squeeky brake

I am not tremendously mechanical. (That is my disclaimer)
The front brake on my new Rockster is squeeking. It seems to be coming from the left (as you are facing forward) disc more than the right side. It doesn't squeek much in the cool of the morning, but the more things heat up, the more noise it makes.
Is there something I can do or should I take it back to the shop? I really hate squeeking my way up to a light on my otherwise nice and quiet beemer.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

Most brakes come with what are called "anti-rattle clips" that keep the pad from vibrating in the caliper. You might want to look at your calipers on each side and see if they look the same.
Alternatively, I've used some stuff called "Disc Brake Quiet" on cars to great success. It's a type of goo that gets applied to the backs of the pads and keeps them from vibrating in the calipers.
Alternatively, you could just wait until the last possible minute and then nail those brakes. No squeaking!

Also check the pads and see if something has become embedded in them. If a piece of metal has gotten on the pad it will make noise like you describe.

I have a similar problem on my '04 R1100S. It is a semi-squeaking sort of grinding noise coming from the front. It sounds like maybe I'm grinding a spent pad against the disc but I have inspected it and the pads have plenty of meat left on them. Could it be glazing? I'm not sure. The brakes work great but the problem is the same, annoying noise coming from the discs at slow speeds.
Would it be a rotor problem? Possibly warpage? Can discs be turned like car rotors? I have never had this problem before on a bike so not sure how to deal with it.
